Case: Ben & Jerrys: Preserving Mission & Brand Within Unilever

    Write a 1-page senior executive-level memo

Sample A-Level Case Memo Southwest AirlinesExecutive Issue

The central decision facing Southwest Airlines is whether its low-cost, high-frequency operating model can remain sustainable in an increasingly competitive and cost-pressured airline industry.

    Analysis

Southwests competitive advantage is rooted in tightly aligned activities: standardized aircraft, point-to-point routing, high aircraft utilization, and a culture reinforcing cost discipline. Financially, this system supports lower operating costs and faster turnaround times relative to competitors.

    Strategic Alternatives

    1. Maintain current low-cost focus.

    2. Introduce limited premium services.

    3. Expand aggressively into international routes.

    Recommendation

Southwest should maintain its focused low-cost strategy while selectively investing in operational resilience rather than diluting its activity system with premium offerings.

    Risks and Ethics

The primary risk is erosion of cultural discipline during expansion. Ethical considerations include labor relations and customer transparency regarding service limitations.

This course uses the Harvard Case Method, which requires active preparation, rigorous analysis, and executive-level judgment. Each case places you in the role of a senior leader confronted with complex, ambiguous strategic decisions. Your responsibility is not to summarize what happened, but to analyze the situation, diagnose the core issues, and recommend defensible courses of action.

    1. Case Summary & Key Issues (Required Starting Point)

Each case analysis must begin with a concise but substantive case summary that: Identifies the central decision problem(s) facing leadership Highlights the key strategic, ethical, operational, or organizational issues Distinguishes symptoms from root causes Clearly frames the decision context (who is deciding, what is at stake, and why now) This section should demonstrate that you understand the case holistically before moving into deeper analysis.

    2. Analytical Rigor & Strategic Reasoning

Following the summary, your analysis should: Apply relevant strategic frameworks and course concepts where appropriate Evaluate alternative courses of action, including tradeoffs and risks Demonstrate executive judgment under uncertainty

Address both short-term implications and long-term strategic consequences There is no single correct answer. What matters is the quality of your reasoning and the strength of your evidence.

    3. Evidence-Based Arguments

All recommendations must be defended with credible academic or practitioner sources, including: Peer-reviewed journal articles Academic books Reputable business publications (e.g., Harvard Business Review) Sources should be integrated thoughtfully into your argument rather than appended as afterthoughts. Unsupported opinions do not meet MBA-level expectations.

    4. Length & Format

Length is not the primary criterion for evaluation. Instead, submissions must be thorough, logically structured, and professionally written. Executive-level communication is expected: precise, direct, and persuasive.

    5. Class Presentation & Engagement

Students must be fully prepared to present and defend their analysis in class. This includes: Clearly articulating recommendations Responding to challenges and counterarguments Engaging constructively in discussion as both presenters and peers

Cold-calling may be used. Preparation is not optional.

    6. Professional Standard

Your case analyses should reflect the level of work expected from MBA graduates, consulting teams, and senior managers making high-stakes decisions. Surface-level or incomplete preparation undermines both your learning and the learning of others.

  • Health equity and PHN discussion response

respond this my classmate’s post on health equity and public health nurse with additional information or support and at least 1 current journal reference.

The main focus of public health nurses is not only to provide optimal healthcare for people of all communities but also to understand what factors are the possible barriers causing the discrepancies amongst groups of people so they can be addressed or rectified. A provision within the American Nurses Association 2025 Code of Ethics states Nurses and their professional organizations work to enact and resource practices, policies and legislation to promote social justice, eliminate health inequities and facilitate human flourishing (ANA, 2025). This is exactly what public health nurses strive to do. By addressing these needs public health nurses can help to improve health equity from the individual to the system level (Hassmiller & Wakefield, 2021).

Public health nurses can help to promote health equity by identifying health disparities, addressing social determinants of health, building and supporting communities, advocating for change and most importantly delivering proper inclusive care. They identify health disparities through data and research of different communities or groups of people. An example of this would be Bergen Countys Community Health Needs Assessment which was conducted by multiple local hospitals in 2025. This consisted of a public survey given out to the communities in hopes of collecting crucial data that paints a picture of possible disparities, barriers or social determinants that could be preventing members of the community from receiving proper care across all areas of human needs. This survey concluded in July of 2025, and the data collected from this survey was then used to initiate the creation of different targeted programs in hopes of eliminating these problems thus resulting in improved access to care (Bergan County of New Jersey, 2025). Public health nurses collecting data about the community helps to gain a different perspective and truly understand what the people need. Once the data is analyzed and trends are identified, public health nurses can work to devise a plan of how to address them or different programs to rectify these barriers. Different examples of programs are food assistance programs, housing, transportation, health clinics and much more to target the areas that were shown to need improvement based on the data collected from the community.

An important task of public health nurses is also advocacy. While collecting, understanding and acting on the data that was collected about a specific community or group of people is important, without advocacy change cannot occur. These nurses work hard to advocate for those who do not have a voice and help enact change to rectify these issues across all levels of the healthcare network. Advocating and supporting the needs of the community are how these nurses make changes to protect the health and wellbeing of the community (Chiu et al., 2021)

Tessellations are a means of “tiling the plane”. They are decorative, repetitive works of art made in various mediums. M.C. Escher, the Dutch graphic designer was known for his extensive work with tessellations.

Using examples from Escher, and the weblinks provided to you in Helpful Tessellation Links, search for a tessellation in person to show the class.

    Find a Tessellation:

Take a selfie with a tessellation you discover around town. For insurance purposes, an additional 2nd pic can be provided of the artwork. Photos that are found to be from online sources, or failure to follow instructions will receive point deductions. Don’t forget to tell us where the tessellation was discovered in your thread.

Tessellations can be discovered all over. For example, USD campus and Balboa Park have fountains that share some very similar tile work. Downtown La Jolla has some spread about while you walk on Girard. Home Depot sometimes has examples on display for kitchen and bathrooms. Many of your local Taco Shops probably have these decorating the establishment as well. Even textiles and fabrics are decorated in tessellations.
