  • Reading Response: What is the Value of Literacy? (Brandt and…

    Assignment Requirements:

    First, please read Andrea Fishman’s

, which is new. You will probably want to return to

    as well.

To help you learn to read critically and incorporate effective textual support, you will complete reading responses for several of the assigned readings this semester. Reading responses ask you to use direct evidence from the course readings to answer a prompting a question. This means that each reading response should include at least one quote or paraphrase from the assigned text.

Reading Responses should be uploaded as a Microsoft Word document using MLA or APA formatting (including an APA title page or MLA header) and in-text citations and a Works Cited/References page. There is no word count for these responses, but you should be thoroughly answering the question with specific evidence that is incorporated into your own writing. To do this, I recommend around 250 words, but you’re welcome to write more or less if you feel like that’s what you need to answer the question.

    This Week’s Prompt:

    Do This

As we begin our work in Unit 1 of our course, we are looking at what Literacy is and how we can apply and understand it, as well as understanding how we as individuals become literate and what literacy means not just to each individual, but as a cultural, social, and contextual concept. For this reading response I want you to use Fishman and Brandt to consider how you feel your own culture values literacy. What is the “purpose” of being literate for your culture? What does it do/not do? Why or why not does it matter to be literate, etc? This prompt wants you to specifically think about the way Fishman is studying Eli Jr.’s literacy and comparing it to general American cultural values, as well as how Brandt defines the different paths to literacy each individual person goes through. Instead of asking you “why do YOU value literacy”, this is about thinking about the ways your culture (your upbringing, your cultural contexts, where and how you became literate, things like politics, religion, etc. influenced it) values it.

Reflect back on the Andrea Fishman piece and Deborah Brandt‘s piece on literacy sponsors. In it, she describes how Eli Jr.’s contexts of literacy and what they mean to his culture. Fishman is also rhetorically analyzing the context of literacy as a whole, and argues that while to ‘mainstream’ culture Eli’s life may seem backwards or even simplistic, the concept of literacy to the Amish is seen as extremely important in a way that is almost foreign to outsiders. At the same time, Fishman’s words can also be rhetorically analyzed; she has a very obvious argument that she is trying to make in her ethnography of Eli and the Amish that goes beyond the family’s interactions and looks outward into how American culture teaches literacy and values (or doesn’t) value literacy beyond technical ability. Feel free to use any other readings so far too, if you want to draw connections between the readings.

Be sure to read this week’s MLA and APA content pages before completed this assignment.

    Essay Question;

In the poetry section of Native American Oral Literature, we read “Cherokee War Song,” and “Lenape War Song.”

From your readings of the Introduction, the poems, and the notes included in the textbook, what are the key values of the speakers in these poems? Quote specific examples from the poems to support your stance.

    Essay

:Cherokee war song is part of the memoirs of Lieut Henry Timberlake Who accompanied three Cherokee chiefs to London. Timberlake noted that many of the Cherokee war songs were beautiful to listen to and were created ad lib. Cherokee war song although at first glance it may seem as if it is violent and vengeful; the key value the speaker of the poem gives off is the lamentation of people who have been persecuted and displaced who wish for the safety of them and their families. The Lenape war song on the other hand can be considered more of a religious song rather than a war song: it is a prayer which the people of Lenni Lenape tribe would sing before they went to war with the Europeans. Both of the war songs give insights to the cruel nature of war, as well as the love of family and community/ tribe.

One key value that the speaker in the Cherokee war song and in the Lenape war song have is the desire to ensure safety and peace for their respective families and community. In Cherokee war song the poem states that, Pinchd by each blast, by evry thicket torn, run back to their own nation, now its scorn. (Cherokee war song). From this excerpt it is clear that the Cherokee people just want the English men to go back to their homeland or rather country and leave their (the Cherokee peoples) land and people alone. In the Lenape war song, the speaker states

that, O! though Great Spirit above! Take pity on my children and on my wife! Prevent their mourning on my account! (Lenape war song) In this excerpt, the speaker is asking the gods to protect his family from any dangers that may occur or ensue when he is way, he also in the poem is asking the gods to protect him so that he can back to his family

Another key value of the speakers of the Cherokee war song and the Lenape war song is the cruel nature of war : In Cherokee war song, the speaker states that, But when we go, who knows which shall return, when growing dangers rise with each new morn? Farewell, ye little ones, ye tender wives, for you alone we would conserve our lives. (Cherokee war song). This excerpt showcases that the men would go off to fight in order to protect their families from the invaders, however, they (the warriors)would worry if they would be able to make it back home at the end of the day to their loved ones. In the Lenape war song, the poem opens with the statement, O poor me! Who am I going out to fight the enemy, and know not whether I shall return again, to the embraces of my children and my wife. (Lenape war song) Similar to the speaker of the Cherokee war song, the speaker of the Lenape war song is worried whether he would be able to make safe back home. This showcases that the war between the Europeans and the Natives were so cruel that it left many of the warriors dead therefore whenever the warriors went for war, they did not know whether or not they would make back home alive.

Both of the speakers, in both war songs showcase a key value of wanting to drive the enemy (the Europeans) out of their land and territories. In the Cherokee war song, the speaker states that, Like men we go, to meet our countrys foes, who woman-like, shall fly our dreaded blowsLet them sit down, from friends and country far, and wish, with tears, they neer had

come to war.. Their painted scalps shall be a step to fame, and grace our own glorious countrys name. (Cherokee war song) In this excerpt, the speaker is essentially stating that they would revert to using violence to destroy the white man who invaded their territory, killed their loved ones and stole their lands. The Lenape war song speaker states that, Grant that I may be successful in this attempt- That I may slay my enemy, And bring home the trophies of war to my dear family and friends that we may rejoice (Lenape war song) The speaker is essentially asking the great spirits to give him strength to win the war and this involved killing the enemy or driving them back to their home country.

From observation, it is clear that both the Cherokee war song and the Lenape war song are a plea of people who have been stolen from, murdered, displaced and are therefore terrified and exhausted and just want safety of them, their families and the community at large so that their life can be as it were before the European invaded. The speaker showcase that the only way to accomplish their goals of safety and acquiring their lands is bloodshed, which they are willing to indulge in.
