Writing Question
Directions:
Each student will complete an 8-page research paper germane to juvenile delinquency. The cover sheet and reference section are included in the eight pages. The research paper must be typed, double-spaced, 12pt. font size, in APA format, with APA references, and contain at least 8 references (must be from within the last 5 years) to include research, position paper, theoretical paper, or review of the literature published in professional journals. A research article has a method(s). A Review consists of summarizing the literature, research methods, research findings, research discussion, and implications. The topics to choose from are listed below.
Research Topics:
-
- Punitive Juvenile Justice Policies
- Rehabilitative & Restorative Justice in Juvenile Justice
- The school-to-Prison Pipeline
- Disparate Proportions of the Poor and Youth of Color in the Justice System
- Criminalization of Culture in P-12 Schools (i.e., CROWN Act
- Your selected topic and outline will guide the research project.
- The above topics are intentionally broad to allow you to narrow the focus to fit your research interests. The assignment will open on 4/06/2026 at 6:30 a.m. and close on 4/10/2026. A course calendar has been provided so you will know the exact dates for turning in assignments. The research paper is worth a total of 150 points, and of that 150 points, 90 points will come from the content, and the other 60 points will be based on APA formatting. Remember, there can be no plagiarism. If anyone has been found to have plagiarized, it would mean an automatic grade of F.

Presidential immunity memo
In a 6-3 opinion, the Supreme Court argued in Trump v. United States (2024) that former presidents are immune from criminal prosecution for actions taken “within the core plenary powers of the executive.” (The Wall Street Journal, July 1, 2024).
In this memo youll stake out a position in a debate over the Trump decision, telling your reader why you agree or disagree with the Court’s majority opinion. You’ll use evidence from the week’s required readings (in the Presidential Immunity readings folder) in order to support your reasoning.
Your memo should include the following (in no more than 2 pages, double-spaced):
- A short summary of the Trump case, using evidence from the required readings, including some direct quotes
- Your opinion in favor or against supported with properly cited evidence from at least two of the articles, including some direct quotes
- A short counter-argument in which you acknowledge some of the strengths of the opposing point of view, using properly cited evidence from at least one relevant article, including some direct quotes

unit 6 & 7
Progress Check
Use this activity to assess whether you can:
- Describe the sampling distribution for sample proportions and use it to identify unusual (and more common) sample results.
- Distinguish between a sample statistic and a population parameter.
- Use StatCruch to find a confidence interval to estimate a population proportion when conditions are met.
- Interpret the confidence interval in context.
- Interpret the meaning of a confidence level and relate it to the margin of error when testing a claim.
- Given a claim about a population, determine the null and alternative hypotheses.
- Conduct a hypothesis test for a population proportion and state a conclusion in context.
- Interpret the P-value as a conditional probability.
- Recognize type I and type II errors and articulate the consequence of either error.

Race IAT Questions & Variables
Open for the Race prompt
Question 1 and Question 2 use different variables. For each question, you can find a description of the indicated variable on this Race IAT page.
Question 1
The variable for this question is Crime-Equal.
-
-
- Which IAT data set are you working with?
- Use StatCrunch to find the 95% confidence interval that estimates the population proportion of Race IAT participants who moderately agree that law enforcement officers should act as if members of all racial groups are equally likely to commit crimes (). Highlight and copy everything in your StatCrunch output window and paste it into your response.
- Identify the sample proportion in your StatCrunch output table. Then determine whether conditions are met for using the confidence interval to estimate the population proportion of participants in your chosen IAT. (Be sure to support your answer as demonstrated in Units 6 and 7.)
- If conditions are met, estimate the population proportion of participants in your particular IAT, and state your conclusion in context. If conditions are not met, explain what a researcher could do so that conditions are met.
- Based on your analysis, do you think the population of participants in your chosen IAT is representative of the U.S. population? Explain.
-
Question 2
The variable for this question is Race.
Question to be investigated: According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2019 approximately 13.4% of the U.S. population identified themselves as black. Is the proportion of black participants lower for your chosen IAT?
Respond to each of the following.
-
-
- State your hypotheses in symbolic form and in words. (The population of interest and the meaning of the proportion in terms of the variable Race should be clear in your answer.)
- StatCrunch uses a normal model to estimate the -value probability. Are the normality conditions met? Show your work.
- Use StatCrunch to conduct the hypothesis test (). Copy and paste the results (the StatCrunch output window) into the textbox.
- Give your -value and interpret its meaning as a conditional probability.
- State a conclusion that answers the research question. Use a significance level of 5%. (Your answer should include the -value and reference the population and the appropriate variable.)
-
Question 3
We cannot know whether a Type 1 or Type 2 error actually occurs in a hypothesis test. But, based on the results of our hypothesis test, we should be aware of which type of error is possible and what that error means in the context of our test.
-
-
- For the hypothesis test, you conducted in Question 2, which type of error is possible, Type 1 or Type 2? Briefly explain why.
- In the context of your hypothesis test, interpret the type of error you identified in part a).
-

- Use StatCrunch to find the 95% confidence interval that estimates the population proportion of Weapons IAT participants who indicate that they feel neither warm nor cold toward black Americans ().

Primary Source Response
Choose only one of the following two assignment options to fulfill the Unit 6 Primary
Source Response.
OPTION #1
Read the American Yawp primary source documents John OSullivan Declares
Americas Manifest Destiny and Diary of Woman Migrating to Oregon, 1853. In
addition, listen to the Backstory Podcast segment Border Crossings. Your assignment is
to explore how these sources shed light on key developments of the manifest destiny
era. What ideologies of expansion does OSullivan espouse, and how do these play out in
the real world experiences of Amelia Knight, the woman migrating to Oregon in 1853?
Furthermore, what part do Native Americans play in OSullivans vision, Knights
travels, and the US war with Mexico (as noted in the podcast)? (essay length
approximately 350 words)
OPTION #2
Read the American Yawp primary source documents Prigg v. Pennsylvania, 1842 and
1860 Republican Party Platform. In addition, listen to the Backstory Podcast Lincoln
the Lawyer. Your assignment is to explore why Abraham Lincoln, and the election of
Lincoln at the head of the Republican Party in 1860, was the straw that broke the
camels back, so to speak. In other words, who was Lincoln, what did the Republican
Party in 1860 stand for, and why was the election of Lincoln the spark that led to the
secession of eleven southern states who in turn formed their own nation, the Confederate
States of America? (essay length approximately 350 words) -
