    27. Long Essay Question: There is no specific lengthy here, I want to see how you apply these authors analytically in answer the following prompt.

    Scenario:

Scenario: It is the year 2021-2022 and a global pandemic in the form of a new strain of the Covid virus has struck the world. This virus has spread around the globe, impacting every country. However, states and their governments have responded differently to this pandemic with some arguing that certain states have responded better than others.

As political scientists you are asked to provide analysis of what factors are necessary to help us understand how effective a countrys response will be. In other words, how can we begin to understand and analyze how countries will respond differently to this ongoing crisis?

In order to answer this question, I want you to draw upon the following authors: Fukuyama, Weber, and Robinson and Acemoglu (Why Nations Fail, and the Narrow Corridor). What do these authors say about questions of state power, scope and capacity, institutions, and how do these authors inform the ongoing pandemic crisis? You must use these authors and directly quote from the readings to do well on this question. You must have a minimum of five quotes to be successful on this essay question.

Your primary post needs to be 200-220 words and contributes specific ideas to the conversation.

    Student Example DO NOT Copy

For this assignment, I have chosen to analyze a relationship that occurred in the past between myself and two of my close friends with whom I shared a sisterhood-like friendship. Though my relationship with them drifted quite some time ago, it was an important part of my life in terms of understanding empathy and emotional development. The reason behind this choice is the fact that our relationship involved surviving situations that would break most friendships. Our relationship was based on elevating each others self-respect. If one of us were dealing with emotions, whether due to being hurt by someone close or insecurity towards them, we would make light of the situation while acknowledging our emotions. We uplifted one another in a manner that reaffirmed our value, enabling each other to feel capable, respected, and cherished. While it was not easy to be vulnerable at times, we always displayed empathy, comprehending each others point of view without criticism. We were also mindful of conflict situations, examining both sides and emphasizing effective communication. Though we now take separate ways in life, the friendship has left us with positive memories to remember. It is evident that the end of a friendship does not necessarily need to be negative or end with any bitterness, but should leave room for personal development.

Another Student Example DO NOT Copy

For my relationship analysis paper, I have chosen a close friend who has consistently been an ego booster in my life. This friendship has helped enhance my self-esteem because they consistently make me feel accepted, competent, and appreciated. When I share accomplishments or struggles with them, they respond with encouragement and understanding, reinforcing a positive self-concept. Their support shows how our self-esteem is influenced by the feedback and communication we receive from others, illustrating that the self-concept is subjective and shaped socially.

I practice empathy and mindfulness in this friendship by intentionally listening and trying to understand their perspective without judgment. For example, when my friend faced a difficult decision at work, I focused on their feelings rather than offering solutions. I asked clarifying questions and reflected back their concerns to ensure they felt heard and validated. This process of synchronizing perceptions not only strengthens our communication but also maintains the quality of our relationship over time.

Differentiation plays a role in our friendship, as we each maintain our individuality while remaining connected. Recognizing our unique strengths and differences has made our relationship more resilient, demonstrating that healthy relationships support both shared connection and personal growth. This combination of empathy, mindfulness, and mutual support continues to enhance our bond and positively impact my self-esteem.

Another Student Example DO NOT Copy

For my relationship analysis, I am focusing on my close friend Alonso, who has been a wonderful ego booster in my life. Alonso makes me feel important and capable by always noticing my hard work and giving me sincere compliments. Whenever I feel unsure of myself, Alonso points out my strengths, which helps me feel much more confident and worthwhile. This kind of support is a huge part of why our friendship is so strong and healthy.

To keep this relationship going, I use mindfulness and empathy every time we talk. Being mindful means I give Alonso my full attention. I put away my phone and really listen to what is being said without judging or interrupting. This helps me understand Alonsos feelings in the moment. I also use empathy to see things from Alonso’s perspective. If Alonso is having a hard day at work, I try to imagine how that stress feels so I can offer the right kind of comfort. By showing that I truly care and understand, I make sure our connection stays deep and positive. These simple habits of listening and caring help us stay “in sync” and ensure that we both feel appreciated and happy in our friendship.

The thing that stand are how the source was leaked from the Claude code in the first place. Also, how was it accidentin the first place? The person was affected because he took the code with knowledge that it was an accident but he shared it on GitHub anyway for hundreds to use it. It was a small mistake by Claude that led to the person sharing the code and created a chain of events where thousands of innocent people got caught in the crossfire.

It shapes my understanding of ownership because sometimes you should be careful with your security to make sure stuff like that never happens or ends up on the website. Just because you own something doesn’t mean you can put it anywhere you like. I encountered someone in a painting recreation using AI and claiming they made it themselves. I decided to look and see if the person really did make it themselves. Who really owns this or that in the first place?

I have seen those fake pictures of GTA VI leaked all over social media. I will respond like be careful dont be fool by those videos and images. The responsibility they have is making sure all there stuff is all secured in the first place before stuff is leaked or taken from them. Responsibility matter because you dont just want any hold important data, code, source or anything else like in the first place

Discussion 3: Interventions In Your Community

    Intervention Analysis

    Background

Focusing your intervention is key to success. This week you will find interventions and analyze them. This is a tricky job and much like advertising, you need to look for clues in the “advertisement” to see who the author is intending to reach.

This week, you will find and analyze a SIMPLE intervention to see how it is focused. This week it is a discussion!

    Key Points:

*Interventions work on a group scale, interventions are not health one to one health care

*Public Health interventions are not free treatment, remember, public health is prevention!

*Interventions must be tailored to your target group identified in your research of for distribution and determinants.

*A good question is “Does my intervention find my at risk group where they live, work and play?”

*Some campaigns are not really PH, especially on social media and the web, are not really campaigns. They are educational or opinion posts functioning as advertisement for services. This is not to say the message is good or bad, but we do want to know how to differentiate between the two!

    Readings

No readings this week! But you do have a “field trip”!

    Assignment Steps

    1. In your community find a SHORT intervention that addresses any public health problem.
    2. Options are: posters, billboards, commercials, or a flyer. You can use a social media campaign if it is NOT advertising. I Keep it SIMPLE. See my examples below. DO NOT submit an entire website or a huge program or medical care. If you find something NOT from the internet, you get +5 bonus points! My example below would NOT get extra credit as it is from social media.
    3. Provide a short 1-2 sentence summary of the campaign and where you found it.
    4. Tell me who you think the intervention is designed for (demographics). Include age, race, gender and socioeconomics. Analyze the campaign NOT the problem.
    5. Tell me why you think it is focused to that group. Do not analyze the problem. Analyze the intervention.
    6. Reply. You need TWO this week.
      1. Find a campaign that you like. Comment on it and why.
      2. Find a peer that posted a campaign focused on the same or similar topic. Compare and contrast it to your campaign choice OR
      3. Then we will be each other’s detectives. Find a campaign that really is an advertisement, not a true PH a campaign
      4. For the second reply: Vote for the post “spoke to you” and why. Tell them if you think the campaign is an effective one or not.

    Example

I found this campaign on Instagram after a student used it in an assignment. It is about depression.

    depression post from instagram

age: this campaign talks about household chores, so I think it is focused on someone over 25 and less than 50 since that is the age to have a busy household.

race/ethnicity: This is just print so I don’t see any racial or ethnic focus.

gender: I think this is focused more to women since it talks about household chores and self-care as these are more often terms and things women would be oriented to. Some men may identify with this (or should!), but I think more women do.

SES: I think this is for middle class and higher focused. People of lower SES don’t often practice “self care” or have the money to do so. There is also some advanced vocabulary that someone of lower education would not know or identify with such as “exhaustion, justify and worthiness”. These terms and “masking” or “self-isolating” are also terms that someone who either reads therapy books or attends therapy would know, another clue to higher SES and access to money and healthcare.

Example Reply 1:Hey Catherine. I like your post and it is well written. I did some research though and I think this is just someone’s personal instagram account, not Public Health. I looked up the “Igototherapy” account and it says:

    I Go to Therapy
lets talk about mental health & therapy
mental health support & education for your journey
    not a therapist
    resources & find a therapist

I wonder if they get money for referrals? The posts are really good though so that’s nice!

Example Reply 2: Hi Catherine. I vote for your post. I think this post speaks to my demographic of women who are old enough to manage a household (they mention all those chores!) since I am at the stage in life where I am juggling a lot of the things they are talking about! I also feel like women especially are supposed to smile and act nice like they say so that makes me think it is focused to women.

    What You Need to Accomplish

    • Provide an image of a public health campaign
    • Analyze the campaign for the following clues to focus
      • Age
      • Race
      • Gender
      • Socioeconomics
    • Provide a rationale for your analysis
    • Analyze one peer ad choosing one factor below
      • Compare and contrast a campaign with a similar focus to yours.
      • Find a campaign that you feel might be an advertisement in disguise of a public health campaign.
    • “Vote” for your favorite campaign and state why
    • Have the names of the peer in both replies.
    • Follow the format including bold categories.

    Discussion (Un-Grading) Rubric

Questions to Ask Before You Post

    • 1.”Does anything an average person doesn’t know have a citation?” (if not put one in)
    • 2. “Is what I put in the assignment relevant, and does it add to the question/purpose of the assignment?” (Dont just dump facts since they sound good)
    • 3 “Can I understand what I wrote?”. (If you can understand it, then you should be good.)
    • 4. What did I learn? Lets hope that’s something good!
Criteria Accomplished Progressing Revisit & Revise
