A mentor once told me a saying: Ask for a job, and you will get advice. Ask for advice, and you will get a job. Perhaps its an oversimplification, but there is a lot of truth in it. In most professions and especially in financial advising, networking and asking good questions are two of the most important skills to learn. In this assignment, you will practice both.
For this assignment you will select 3 financial advisors to contact. Draft an email to each one and request to meet over coffee, lunch, video call, or phone call. As a requirement, this conversation cannot be had over email. During a later module, you will submit the notes from the conversation. You only need to schedule and successfully meet with 1 financial advisor, but you may meet with more than 1.
Instructions
Submit a Word document with the following 3 sections.
Section 1: Create a bullet point list of 3-5 financial advisors you plan on contacting. Under each advisor, list the name of their business and a link to their website. Preferably list advisors with whom you do not currently have a close relationship (i.e. not family or close friends).
Section 2: Draft a 50-200 word email to send to the financial advisors. Introduce yourself and explain you are looking to enter the industry and would enjoy asking them a few questions about their work and retirement planning. Make sure your request is time-bounded (i.e. request 30-45 minutes).
Section 3: List 10 questions you may ask the financial advisor during the conversation. You will not be expected to ask every single one of these questions, but you will have them ready to ask.
Most of the questions should relate to retirement planning, but not every question needs to directly reference it. Examples include: What is your approach or process to helping clients prepare for retirement?, What causes retirees the most stress?, As an advisor what are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of retirement planning?, and What is your biggest success story in relation to retirement planning?. You may include these example questions in your list of 10 questions.
