No matter the method used to identify and land a career-oriented job, a resume is a key to your success. It is a representation of you and can open doors if done correctly or can damage your credibility if done incorrectly. This is the first branding your potential employers see from you, so by extension, this is the MOST important document you will EVER produce. And in today’s work environment, you will reproduce it multiple times throughout your career.
Note my emphasis on CAREER. A job is something any one of us can go and find TODAY by simply filling out an application, having a short interview, agreeing to be paid minimum wage, and starting tomorrow. A career, however, is a series of stepping stones leading to a much greater outcome in the long run. Getting a J.O.B. (Just Over Broke) is too shortsighted. A career presents the opportunity to grow in your preferred expertise or to expand your horizons, which ultimately makes you more marketable and gives you options if you are ever the victim of a layoff, downsizing, or firing. Having multiple skillsets means you have more
“arrows in your quiver” – an expression used to indicate someone’s adaptability or versatility.
