Case study Change Management & Crisis Response

Case B: Ethical Leadership & Social Responsibility Chipotles Food Safety Crisis
Use an HBR or equivalent case plus Paines Value Shift, Collins Level 5 leadership.

Focus themes:
Food sourcing, supplier controls, and culture.
Transparency and communication with regulators, media, and guests.
CEO posture: humility vs. defensiveness, learning vs. blame.
Long term brand recovery and operational redesign.

Specific questions:
1. In what ways did Chipotles leadership embodyor fail to embodyLevel 5 leadership during the crisis? Be specific about humility, accountability, and long term orientation.
2. Apply Paines Value Shift framework: what values came into conflict (e.g., growth, cost, speed, safety, transparency)? How were these conflicts resolved in practice?
3. Evaluate the companys crisis communication: What did they do well? Where did they fall short in terms of honesty, timeliness, empathy, or responsibility?
4. Imagine you are brought in as a new Chief Food Safety & Integrity Officer reporting directly to the CEO. Outline your first years agenda in three domains: (a) operations and supply chain, (b) culture and training, (c) external accountability and transparency.

Optional activity: Crisis management simulation & ethics forum
Run a synchronous simulation where students play CEO, COO, HR, Legal, PR, and Unit GM roles responding to a new outbreak or social media crisis.
Follow with an asynchronous ethics forum where students reflect on:
The pressures they felt in their role.
Ethical shortcuts they were tempted to take.
How frameworks from Northouse, Collins, and Paine would have improved their decisions.
