  • COMM-105-3A-77 Public Speaking (Online Undergraduate)

The instructor wants to know what you may have learned, in summary, from the COMM 105 course and how it may be applied as you progress in your career. Please take a few minutes and provide your thoughts and responses to each one of the following questions.

    1) How would you evaluate the information provided in the chapters? Which chapter(s) was the most useful or meaningful to you as you studied the course material?

    2) Was the progression of the topics and concepts in the chapters and in the coursework useful in helping to comprehend and apply them in the assignments? Please explain.

    3) As a result of taking this course, do you feel more capable and comfortable in speaking or making a presentation to an audience?

    4) Assume that you have been invited to give a big speech on an important occasion. As part of this and from what you have learned in this course, provide your thoughts in a sentence or two on the importance of each of the following topics/activities as they would relate to this speech. This can be presented in a narrative, outline, summary points, etc. (you decide). The main requirement is for you to express your thoughts on how to incorporate these items when you are asked to give a speech next time in your academic or professional career:

    • Preparation
    • Interest in / knowledge of topic
    • Analysis / knowledge of audience
    • Ethics
    • Outline preparation
    • Introduction
    • Conclusion —
    • Support materials (definitions, testimony, statistics, and illustrations) —
    • Overcoming CA (Communicative Apprehension)
    • Speak extemporaneously
    • Presentation aids
    • Enthusiasm / passion about topic

For the last two questions, you can list your answers and these do not have to be in a narrative or report format. Words or phrases are fine.

    5) What are five items that you have learned in this course that will make you a better speaker?

    Here are some examples:

    • Advance preparation is very important.
    • Wording on a slide must be concise.
    • Speakers must be ethical in preparing and delivering their speeches.
    • Etc.

    6) Going forward, what are five items that you will focus on in speech preparation and delivery as you continue/complete your college work and advance in your career?

    Here are some examples:

    • I will prepare my introduction in such a way as to get the audience’s attention.
    • I want my conclusion to have a residual effect (this is what an audience will most likely remember).
    • The use of concrete words is preferable over generic words — I know it is best to use words that will “paint a picture” with the audience.
    • Etc.

Please submit your responses to these questions to the Assignment tab by Thursday (Day 4) 11:59 p.m.

Why Communication is important in Business

  • Communications Question

Once you have received topic approval, based on the research proposal you submitted, please post on the discussion forum your approved topic along with a few sentences explaining your research.

The final research paper is an 8- to 10-page paper providing a detailed analysis and examination of an issue in digital journalism as it relates to an established podcast. The digital journalism issue may be drawn from course readings or other sources. The paper should include a significant research question you plan to answer, the method you employed for analyzing the issue, a literature review, a critical analysis of the issue, your conclusions and suggestions for future study. Use APA style of citation throughout.

Note: One of the objectives of research in general as well as this research paper is to develop new knowledge. There are multiple ways to achieve this; e.g., a creative synthesis and/or original critical analysis of findings from earlier studies. Another way to generate new knowledge is by conducting surveys — formal or informal surveys — or interviews or, for example, conducting a comparative study of two digital journalism sources/media platforms in how they cover a specific set of stories. Both surveys, interviews and comparative studies appropriate to your research create new information and lead to new knowledge relevant to your research question.

    Organizational structure should include:

    1. Introduction of the topic and/or brief overview (I.e., why is this area worthy of a research study?)
    2. Research question (See link below.)
    3. Historical antecedents of the digital journalism issue (I.e., literature review)
    4. Research method (I.e., what did you do in your study?)
    5. Results (If you conducted a survey or interviews, this section reports your findings)
    6. Critical analysis/Discussion
    7. Conclusions
    8. Suggestions for future research

I recommend you consider using headings/titles for above sections that apply to your specific study. Be sure to include a well-written and specific research question in the study, however. See the link below for additional information on writing a research question.

    Links to an external site.

  • Identify a commercial or media program that you consider ageist. Write an Opinion Editorial about it for an industry publication.
  • Determine the target market for the advertisement and intended message. Was it an effective advertisement for that market segment? Reference information from text and class discussion.
  • BREAK the program:
  • Analyze why it is ageist ethical/offensive/microaggression issues?

Defend your conclusion with at least 3 substantiated facts or data.

Determine how the piece could have been rewritten or produced not to be considered ageist – remember your audience is professionals in the field, so creative treatments are of particular interest to them.

This is NOT a term paper – it is your analysis and critical thinking applied in a professional thought leadership exercise. Your opinion alone will not be sufficient for the publication of the article – you need to provide facts from research to support your conclusions, which requires a bibliography.

Add visuals – a screen grab of the commercial for context, and then as you discuss how it could be reimagined, options include adding a revised storyboard, images to reflect revised casting, settings, etc.

Refer to the PowerPoints and class lectures for instruction on how to write an opinion editorial.

I have attached all the necessary resources for the Olay commercial I have chosen.
