Requirements and Deliverables

Individual will identify, analyze and report on a current (ongoing) earthwork operation on a current construction project in the San Diego area.

• Describe the earthwork operation

First provide an overview of the overall project (project name, location, scope, cost, duration, project participants, etc.)

Describe the earthwork operation in detail, and include the following:

• The site layout and conditions of the operation (use photos and graphs to present)
• Soil characteristics and requirements: existing soil, compaction requirements, etc.
• The quantities of the work to be performed, the operations budget and duration,

• The activities and steps of the operation

• The layout and haul roads (indicate distances)
• The specific type and amount of equipment used, details of equipment costs, (including support equipment) and equipment maintenance plan.
• The operators and crews used, material needed (e.g. water), etc.

• Duration of operation and work schedule (work hours, shifts, schedule acceleration, etc.).

• Safety issues and safety plan

• Project difficulties and challenges identified/anticipated, etc.

Use any of the collective bargaining agreements provided in this module, or you may use an alternative construction agreement of your choice. If so, you MUST include a copy of the agreement (PDF or link) with your submission to receive credit.

• Identify the agreement (who the parties are, both union and employer)

• Other than wages or fringes (Pension and H&W contributions), identify three provisions or subsections of provisions, which you think were proposed by and/or are of major interest to the union in bargaining. Explain why the union in particular benefits from such language.

You are in a hypothetical situation renegotiating an 8F construction agreement in an area with 64% market share for the trade involved. The contract will expire within two weeks. You still have two important outstanding issues to resolve, and are still pretty far from reaching an agreement on these remaining two items.

Choose to post as either as the union OR the contractor, then state which one of the following you would do:

• Continue bargaining in hopes of reaching an agreement before the contract expires, even if it means you will have to concede some important terms
• Plan for a strike (if the union) or lockout (if the contractor) when the contract expires
• Plan to continue to bargain past the expiration date, in the hopes of eventually reaching agreement

Explain your rationale for your choice relative to the other options, from the perspective of a construction union (or employer) and based on the facts of the scenario. Identify which perspective you are speaking from. Be sure to use lesson material to support your position.

Yet the construction community seldom goes for stress tests or regular stress appraisals and stress workshops so that they can equip themselves with suitable coping skills to manage stress.
