  • Sentence Manuscript + A Monologue

    A 3 Sentence Manuscript

    Length: three sentences.

Grade: Out of 5 marks, 5% of final grade.

Objective: To carefully consider scale and goals of your manuscript.

    Instructions:

You will be describing what your manuscript is about (or going to be about) in three sentences. Youll want to balance the main ideas, themes, plot, and potentially character(s).

This assignment will be based on the six-sentence description youve written in class.

You want to cut to the core of your story: what is it really about? What parts are the most important to describe?

If you find this task impossible, you may need to either reconsider the scale and goal of your manuscript or have a conversation with me to create a plan to better implement your existing ideas.

This assignment will be graded on:

If your ideas make sense. (Can I follow what you mean?)

    Originality. (Is this something new?)

Clarity of objective. (Do you know what youre writing? Can you describe it?)

Thoughtfulness. (Have you considered what youre going to write about? Have you spent time thinking about your project outside of class?)

Feasibility. (Is this project something you can reasonably accomplish within the confines of this class?)

    A Monologue

    Length: 650-800 words

Grade: Out of 15 marks, 15% of final grade

Objective: To develop dialogue and characterization skills.

    Instructions:

You will write a monologue of approximately 650-800 words in the voice of an original character. Your character may be addressing a reader, audience, or unseen figure.

Your characters monologue should reveal a conflict, and your speaking character should have a distinct, unique, and idiosyncratic voice.

The monologue will tell the audience/reader something about your character: the philosophical lenses they apply to themselves, their position in the world, or their position relative to others in the world.

I should be able to infer details about your speaker that are not explicitly mentioned in the monologue, I should have a sense of knowing them. Think back to our discussion of Doug Stanhope vs David Sedaris!

Consider employing slang, accents, uniquely qualified statements, or other traits that help make your character stand out from a crowd.

On a separate page attached to your assignment, I want a few sentences (1-4) explaining who your character is, what theyre talking about, and who theyre talking to.

This assignment will be graded on:

The believability of the characters voice. They should sound like a real person, not just a cardboard cut out or stereotype!

The use of exposition through dialogue. The character should be able to tell the audience/reader details about their circumstance, life, situation, and ongoing conflict.

Tone and characterization. Your character should sound unique. Are you able to establish a clear mood, atmosphere, and even genre through dialogue?

Consideration of positionality/worldview. How does your character see him/her/themselves in the world? Does that come across in your writing?

    Dialogue should feel organic.

    Lastly-

Come up with five open-ended questions that you would like the class to discuss about “The Lady with the Dog”

  • The yellow wallpaper

Length: 500 words (approximately two pages – multi paragraphs, please!)

Format: Times New Roman 12, one inch margins, double-spaced (Use this font)

Choose either A or B (but not both)

    A. Physician’s Report. John serves as a doctor, husband, and caretaker. As a physician he has diagnosed his wife with a “slight hysterical tendency,” but refuses to consider that something different or more serious may be wrong. In the nineteenth century, hysteria wasn’t well understood as a psychological phenomenon and the main treatment was the rest cure used from 1873 – 1925. It involved confining women to their beds. and forbidding them to have social interactions. In this creative response, write a physician’s report from the husband’s (clinical) point of view. In this report, describe what he observes in his wife’s actions and behavior, his thoughts, concerns, beliefs, and explain why he believes that the rest cure will assist his wife and why he believes that the mansion he chooses to rent for three months is the best place to help his wife recover.

Please note: Use your imagination but stay true to Gilman’s plot.

    OR

    B. I Am Poem. The narrator feels constrained from her physical and creative confinement. That is why she keeps a secret diary hidden from her husband and others. Capture her thoughts, feelings, fears , anguish by writing a poem (in at least 25 lines) from the narrator’s point of view. Pretend that she had written this poem, which was later found by a future tenant of the house. Free feel to incorporate some of the words and phrases she uses in the story in your poem, but of course use your own words as well. Explore how she sees herself, how she views her husband, her confinement, her sister-in-law Jennie, the woman in the wallpaper, etc. This is a poem so use imagery, visual pictures, to illustrate her anguish. Determine whether the tone of your poem will be sad, angry, resigned, regretful, etc. It certainly does not have to rhyme, but flex your creative muscles by using a poetic format to capture some of the narrator’s emotions and thoughts.. Write from the first person point of view. Please note: Use your imagination but stay true to Gilman’s plot. Don’t create a totally different story.

Don’t forget: Five open ended questions to the Discussion board about “The Yellow Wallpaper

  • Creative Writing Question

This assignment is meant to expand student knowledge of the multicultural aspects of their own communities. A secondary goal of the assignment is to strengthen the students ability to communicate a dense amount of information in a digitally creative way and in a manner that can easily be adapted to different forms of professional practice. It is important for masters level social workers to be able to use digital technology (and personal experience/knowledge) to convey information as part of professional practice. Piktochart produces a free downloadable e-book titled How to Make an Infographic: A Visual Guide for Beginners. It is highly recommended that you look over this resource before beginning the assignment and/or view this quick take on how to put together a good Infographic . Please keep in mind that every part of an Infographic (color, shading, shapes, pictures, graphs, charts, text, flow, and overall aesthetic) should help convey information about the community, and that wording should be concise and to the point. A reference page using APA style should also be included; however, this assignment is not to be a paper. You should feel free to use whatever Infographic program meets your needs, but please save the final product as a PDF and submit the PDF file for this assignment. The Community-Culture Infographic requires students to investigate multicultural aspects of a community of their choice. For the purposes of this assignment, community is defined liberally: it can be an entire community (a small town), a specific part of a community (the south side etc.), a historic area, or a well-defined neighborhood area (for example, the central district in Seattle; Hyde Park in Chicago; Wynwood section of Miami).

The Community-Culture Infographic should include the following:

    1. A brief description of the neighborhood and its most salient cultural features and your relationship to the community (e.g. what is it called? Does it have distinct boundaries or is it organized around some central place or institution? What, if any, is your experience with this community?)
    2. A description/analysis of important events or histories that shaped its past and present (Was it once associated with a particular ethnic group or population? Who or what are the major streets named after? Are there markers, murals, statues etc. that reflect its history?)
    3. A description of the current cultural milieu of the community (this can include demographics, references to housing, businesses, churches, community organizations, parks, schools/universities, etc.)
    4. A description of the ways in which this community appears to be culturally robust (for example, a community with vibrant institutions, Gay Pride flags on apartment or business windows) or perhaps unhealthy (an area with no cohesion, bars on windows, abandoned buildings, empty lots, etc.)
    5. Provide a summary description/analysis of your perspective as either an Insider or Outsider to this community, and the ways in which this assignment may have changed your view of the communitys culture(s). PLEASE USE CLINTON MARYLAND.
