Essay 1 Visual Media Analysis How does pop culture reflect, influence, critique, and comment on social issues, and how can we read into these narratives more incisively? Your task is to select a visual media text and analyze what that text reveals about contemporary culture. In what ways is your text tapping into, mocking, or reinforcing cultural ideologies? How does the text work to establish or critique social norms? Objective: Write a thesis-driven analytical essay that explores the cultural impact of a visual media/pop culture text a film, TV series, ad campaign, social media trend/influencers content, video game, or other visual form of mass media. Using evidence from 3-4 sources to develop your analysis, explain what this text reveals or satirizes about contemporary U.S. culture or the culture of another country you have lived in/are connected to. (5-6 double-spaced pages + Works Cited, due February 10) Source and Citation Requirements: Your essay will include evidence from a primary source the specific visual media text and 3-4 secondary sources to develop an analysis of your selected text and the cultural work/effects it produces. Locate and incorporate relevant evidence from 3-4 secondary sources (either texts written about your primary text specifically or texts that help you to develop an aspect of your analysis). AT LEAST ONE of these must be a scholarly source, such as a peer-reviewed article in an academic journal. Use MLA format for in-text citation and documentation; include a Works Cited list that documents the sources you cite in the essay. Making The Family Strange Essay
This essay should be no less than 700 and no more than 1,000 words long (about 2-3 double-spaced typed pages in 12-point font, but USE WORD COUNT as a guide for length). It should focus on some aspect of cultural behavior, practice or belief that you see around you (in your family, among your friends, in your social surroundings or in the media you read). Your task is to think about this culture or behavior that is familiar and natural to you and to write about it as if you were a foreign anthropologist observing primitive peoplewrite in a way that makes a familiar aspect of behavior (for example, sports, grocery shopping, a certain job/career, going to the bank, a holiday celebration, the doctors office) appear strange, exotic, unnatural, or barbaric! Go back and look at Horace Miners Body Ritual among the Nacirema as an example. You should describe, interpret, and analyze the cultural practice AS IF it was completely unknown or foreign to you, and strange or disgusting or barbaric in some way.
