Explain what this means to you.

  • Midterm Exam 1

Using both Susan Seymours ethnography of Family and Gender Systems in Transition in urban India and Susan Wadleys ethnography One Straw from a Broom Cannot Sweep, of the joint family in rural North India, critically examine how family remains a central institution shaping individual lives even amid social change. How do education, urbanization, and economic transformation alterbut not eliminatefamily authority, gender hierarchy, expectations of duty, and educational opportunities for young girls? Compare the joint family ideal in rural contexts with the changing family arrangements in Old Town and New Capital Bhubaneswar, paying particular attention to how young womens lives illuminate both the resilience and the limits of family-centered social organization.

Topics to consider: rural joint family and urban extended family, changes in gender roles/marriage, education and women, aspirations and reality

  • Discussion 2

    Description

This week, you read about the process of gender socialization, which occurs early on in our lives, first in the home (primary) and later at institutional sites like schools (secondary).

Reflecting on your own upbringing, share one instance of primary and one instance of secondary socialization that you can remember.

How did these events inform your understanding of gender? Where did they occur? Were they actively (meaning somebody told you directly about gender roles) or passively (meaning they came from encounters with media or perhaps rules at school or somewhere else) socializing you with regards to gender?

    Length: minimum of 250 words

Your response should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards where appropriate. Additional resources are not required but be sure to cite any you use.

    Instructions

    Complete the following steps:

First, pick a culture different from your own that exists as a cultural group in the U.S. This may be a different ethnic or regional identity from your own. (You are not required to receive instructor approval, but you may contact your instructor for feedback when selecting a cultural group.)

Next, select a person from your family, friends, classmates, or workplace that belongs to the culture. Conduct an interview (in-person or phone/video call) or research this cultural group to collect information. Be sure to share the purpose of this assignment with the interviewee to engage in authentic conversations. If the person you are interviewing is not able to provide a response to one or more of the questions below, be sure to do further research to supplement the information you learned from your interview.

Be specific with identifying your selected cultural group. If you are interviewing someone in this cultural group, ask them how they identify themselves. For example, do they consider themselves to be Asian American or South Korean American? If you are researching a cultural group, again be specific with which cultural group you are selecting.

Students should collect information using the following questions.

    Identifying the Cultural Group

    1. Which cultural group did you research?
    2. Summarize how this groups identity is different from and similar to your own. Offer 2-3 similarities and differences.

    Cultural Treatment

    1. Research the latest demographic data available for this groups population in the U.S. and your city.
    2. What are the key characteristics of this cultural group, such as language, values, and customs?
    3. How is this group portrayed in the media? Provide a few examples to support your response.

    Cultural Oppression

    1. Has this cultural group experienced any type of oppression and privilege throughout colonial American and U.S. history (i.e, 1600s through 1900s)?
    2. What is this cultural groups current social standing related to oppression and privilege (i.e., their experience in the 2000s)? What is currently being said in the media about this cultural group?
    3. Offer 2-3 strategies to be an effective ally for this cultural group.

After collecting the material, create a PowerPoint Presentation that showcases all the information gathered from the interview/research. You can write in the first person.

During the interview, you are welcome to enter a dialogue with the interviewee when responses about gender, race, or ethnicity elicit more information.
