Human systems engineering (HSE) seeks to ensure we address human considerations within systems engineering (SE) across the whole life cycle. It is important to consider HF methods and key areas of HF knowledge within SE, these might include human physical, cognitive, social, or organisational characteristics.

    Your assignment has three part:

Part 1: Discuss the role of Human Factors (HF) modelling and HF knowledge acrossthe Systems Engineering (SE) life cycle of a complex socio technical system. You may refer to examples from your group exercise on the module or your wider reading, to help illustrate this

Part 2: As part of your answer to part 1, create at least one new HF related model view. This can be based on work done within the group exercise but should be clearly identified as a new or modified view created by you

Part 3: Write a short discussion of the following question: how do we include specialist human factors knowledge into the practice of Model Based Systems Engineering, and how is this affected by the increasing use of autonomous solution technologies?

This task requires a critical analysis of aspects of the application of human systems engineering during the development of complex socio-technical systems. In parts 1 and 2 the aim is to illustrate how HF modelling and knowledge can be integrated into SE practice. You can use the example from the group exercise, an example related to your work experience or a related case study, to illustrate your answer. Please clearly identify any views where you have expanded on the group work to help answer the question, including at least one new model view. You should be able to answer this question base on the taught material, but the inclusion of ideas from any wider reading may be used to enhance the taught material.

In part 3 you should reflect on wider issues of how HF knowledge and HF expertsintegrate with MBSE. Your answer may be based around material presented during the module but should be complimented with wider research from relevant sources. You should approach this piece of work as a critical analysis with referenced justification for your assertions/suggestions. Note, this is not an assignment on AI systems, but should focus on the challenges that such systems raise for traditional HF practise

While the question is split into three parts you should present your answer as a single essay, building on knowledge, evaluation and argument across all three parts. E.g. refer to ideas from Part 1,2 in your Part 3 discussion.

Read the Future Concept brief, which can be found with this assignment brief on the module. This brief describes a new case study for this assignment. You should base this assignment around the approach from the classroom exercises, but you may bring in other modelling covered on the course if needed.

The brief defines an area of current capability, using some of the standard Mission Analysis and Stakeholder Needs Views covered in the module. It also identifies a high-level Future Concept, to enable distributed teaching with both staff and students joining from off campus. You are not required to review or extend this modelling, beyond the specific tasks in the question, but you may state assumptions or clarifications to support your other answers if needed.

In this assignment, you will be asked to apply MSBE views to this initial concept, to explore System Functions and Requirements and Logical Architecture. For these parts of the question, you are required to apply the E MBSE methodology covered in the taught module, and marks will be awarded for correctly identifying specific Views and using them as described in the methodology.

Alongside this there are some discussions and evaluations of SE theory, which you may discuss using examples from the modelling you produce and any wider reading. When asked to discuss and critically evaluate theory you may quote the source definitions, but you should also try to describe your understanding of those definitions and the related concepts, possibly using further examples or your own experience.

    Assignment Question

1a) Review the Black Box model views provided in the question brief. Using these views as examples briefly define the following terms in your own words, maximum of 100 words per term:

    a. Future Operational Concept

    b. Stakeholder Need

    c. Black Box View

    d. Solution Option

    e. Solutioneering

Note, you may quote the definitions of these terms from the taught module, but you must also discuss the meaning of the terms and relate this to the example. [15 Marks]

1b) Based on the discussion in Q1, evaluate the Stakeholder Needs provided. Give at least one example of changes you would make to the Needs, and at least one example of an additional need. Maximum of 300 words for this part of Q1 [10 Marks)

    2) List at least 2 potential SoI Options that we might propose to respond to the Needs discussed above. Create the following System Function (SF) Views to support an Option Generation study, exploring SoI Options to deliver the Distributed Lecturing Needs:

    • i.SF-View 1a White Box SoI Context
    • ii.SF-View 2a SoI Static Behaviour

iii.SF-View 2b SoI Dynamic Functions (draw at least one SF2b view, and identify which aspect of View 2a it is related to)

iv.List at least one example Functions, for each element, using SF-View 4.

    [25 Marks].

    3) Using the answer to Q1 as your starting point:

i.Take one example function from Q1 and show how it can be used to write at least THREE example Statements of System Requirement (please apply and describe the full 7-step Requirements Elicitation process covered in the taught module)

Please label the requirements you produce and refer to them in the process as needed. Marks are awarded for application of the requirements process as well as the quality of your examples. Any brief description of each step and the outputs of the steps are not included in the word count [25 Marks].

As part of your answer you should discuss some of the possible Requirements Review issues that you would apply in step 6 of the requirements process, and how the use of Requirements Attributes can help to manage these issues max of 300 words for the discussion part of this question.

You are not expected to produce bad requirements so you can illustrate the review process, you can talk about wording that could have been used or potential issues and how you avoided them.

    4) Describe the Logical System Architecture (LA) modelling process you would use to take the SoI Option defined in Q2 and expand its elements and requirements. Note, you do not need to draw all of the SA and LA views defined in the MBSE methodology to discuss the application of the LA process. You may draw simple versions of some views if you wish, and discuss others, to describe the process application. Consider the following specific questions in your discussion:

    • What is the difference between a Logical Element and a Physical Element?
    • How do we identify which SoI Logical Element to expand first?
    • Why do we need to create views which are copies or very similar to other views in this process?

A word limit or 500 to 1000 words [25 marks]
