America is a Christian Nation
NO AI CAN BE USED WHATSOEVER
Papers are based off lecture with documents to support
The goal of this assignment is to see you analyze a political truth claim in the light of
historical data. Historians think in a specific way, and demand that truth claims be
supported with data. We also hold that a truth claim must address the full range of data
that exists in the historical record. We do not pick and choose data like a lawyer,
politician, or polemicist.
What do I mean by a truth claim. A truth claim refers to a statement or proposition that
asserts the truth or accuracy of a particular belief, perspective, or assertion about the
world. It is a declaration that something is true or factual. Truth claims can span various
domains, including philosophy, science, religion, history, and everyday discourse.
It’s important to note that truth claims are subject to scrutiny and evaluation. Different
individuals or communities may hold divergent truth claims, and the process of
assessing these claims often involves critical thinking, analysis, evidence examination,
and sometimes, debate or discussion. Historians root their evaluation of truth claims in
historical documents and archeology.
.
ESSAY PROMPT:
Assess the claim that “America is a Christian Nation.” In your essay, critically examine
the historical foundations of the United States, considering key principles, documents,
and the intentions of the Founding Fathers. Then analyze the evolution of American
religious change over time. Support your analysis with specific examples and
references to relevant historical sources that are provided in the unit file on Blackboard.
Be sure that you define how you are using the term Chirstian.

Historical/Cultural Context Research paper
1500-2000 words Rough Draft Due (At least 75% of the essay — 1000 words): April 9th Final Draft Due: April 16th For this essay, you are asked to complete a cultural and/or historical research paper about something specific in The Four Winds. Your essay should demonstrate that you have researched the topic well and have fully considered cultural and/or historical implications as related Hannah’s tale. Potential Topic Options (in connection to the Great Depression): Family Ties The New Deal (+Farms) Working Class Education Women’s work “Okies” Farming Dust Bowl/Famine Communism Unions Abandonment (of land, of families, etc.) Political Policies Government Assistance (“Welfare”) Migrants (to California + other areas) The American Dream California Work Camps / Labor Camps Racism (Against Italians, Against Hispanics) African Americans/Blacks and the Great Depression Hoovervilles This is not an exhaustive list of possible topics. If you have a topic you are interested in exploring, please feel free to run it by me as I would rather have you research something you are interested in than choosing a topic at random. Guidelines: Choose ONE specific element to serve as the focal point of your essay (See example topics above). The more specific you can be, the better. ABSOLUTELY NO AI !!! Sources: For this essay, you are required to have no less than five academic (peer-reviewed) sources to support your argument. You are required to use Google Scholar, or books/articles from the library for these sources. Pay attention to article dates (more recent is usually better)! Audience awareness The audience for this essay is a general academic audience. Since this audience may not be familiar with Hannah’s text or with the details of the Great Depression, audience awareness is very important in this essay. Avoid Plot Summary your essay may contain a short summary of the Hannah’s story in your introduction or first body paragraph, but otherwise the paper should go well beyond just rehashing what happens in the story. Citations you will need to include BOTH in-text citations and a works cited page for this essay. If you are discussing works by different authors, your in-text citations will include the authors last name and page number: (Carter 27). If there are no page numbers, just include the authors last name: (Carter). If you are comparing works by the same author, you will want to choose a keyword from the tale title for your in-text citations instead: (Sleeping 23) Rubric: 200 pts total 80 pts — Focus/Development 40 pts — Organization 30 pts — Audience Awareness 30 pts — Research integration 20 pts — Grammar/mechanics/formatting/other localized issues -

Midterm Essay
Take the following primary document as a point of departure to compose a ten page scholarly research paper (double spaced 12 point font with Chicago style footnotes). Excellent papers will connect these primary documents to as many of the themes we have explored in this course as possible. Your paper should have an argumenta point of view. It should not ramble or data dump or bring up readings not directly relevant to the primary document. It should, instead, attempt to make sense of the primary document by citing as many of the readings you believe are essential in advancing a full understanding of the primary source and its historical context. While you may find that your paper will benefit from a little bit of extra background research on the topic (and you should certainly cite those external sources that you either have read in other classes or looked up in attempt to better understand these particular documents) this is not a requirement. The best papers will abide in a deeply analytic thought process. Challenge yourself to be extra-brainy here. Think hard about the big ideas of this course through the very small spaces that these documents represent. Colossal themes are hidden in nearly every sentence of these documents. So read carefully, think even more carefully, and then write with precision. Great papers will question everything (sources, motives, veracity, etc.) while still practicing historical empathy for subjects that we are always only capable of partially understanding. Analyze dont summarize. While moral and ethic judgments of past historical actors (either positive or negative) are certainly welcome, the bulk of your paper should try to convey to your reader the significance of this particular historical document given the wider narratives that we are currently exploring about the Atlantic world. In other words, think of these primary documents as entry points to dig more deeply into the course material you have already read. The hope is that these documents can help you think about what you already know in new waysto provide you a chance to show what you knowand write about it all in a convincing way
The Cherokee Nation vs. the American Nation
Analyze the following public declarations by connecting them to the readings thus far along with
any external sources that you believe are relevant. You should avoid summary and, instead,
make a historical argument about the significance of the document in light of the larger span of
Atlantic history you have been learning about thus far.
