  • Steps to Statehood

    Prompt

What circumstances, issues, and motivations in the region led up to Tennessee’s admission as a state? What were the larger, national political issues contributed to divisiveness in admitting TN as a state? Who benefitted from statehood, and who suffered because of it?

Identify and discuss the physiographic region in which you live and at least one other. Talk about how the land (its resources, waterways, geographical features, etc.) impacts the history of the region in which you live and/or the state in general (you can talk about the economy, society, politics, culture of indigenous and settler populations). Be specific and provide historical details from the required sources. How does YOUR story fit into the story of the land in Tennessee?

    • Start the Assignment by providing historical context: time period with dates, major events and issues that preceded the topic being discussed, important background. This is part of your grade.
    • Be specific in your answers. Refer to at least two sources from the lesson in your answer by providing a direct quote of no more than two sentences from each source, or other detailed information from the source. Details include names, dates, data points, stories, events that illustrate a larger point. These details are important- they should be unique to the source and not be information that is easily retrieved from any source on the topic.
    • When quoting a source, you can say “according to A Tennessee History by Dr. Bucy, quote ‘The area of West Tennessee was one of the Chickasaw’s favorite hunting grounds… the road that they used to come into Tennessee was called the Chickasaw Trace’ end quote.”
    • You can also paraphrase from a source by simply remembering some of the details from the source, that way you don’t have to look away from the camera. Just remember to name the source and that the details are identifiable and unique to the source.
    • Do not use any sources from outside course content for any part of this assignment. Do not make clear use of the lesson sources will not be graded.

    ames Davidson

“Women and Boys in Classical Athens”

In the article, Davidson lists the different types of prostitution and variants of sexual relations that exist in Athens. Summarize this hierarchy, and describe the differing characteristics presented.

Why do you think Davidson goes to great lengths to describe these differences?

Do you think there really are any differences?

After having read about the many achievements of Athens laid out in the textbook, how does this expose on the sexuality and gritty nature of the city, change or help shape your overall opinion of the city of Athens? Be specific.

For this article I would like you to consider all of the above questions and provide a concise and well-organized essay that addresses all these issues in some way. I want your answers synthesized into a narrative that is easy to understand ( Intro, Body, Conclusion). I don’t want answers numbered or bulleted. I was want your answers contained in the text of your essay. You can address these issues in any order you like. You don’t have to answer the 1st one 1st, or the last one last. Be creative in how you group ideas and opinions. I would like standard composition form.

Remember grammar and spelling are important. Please use a standard 12 font for the text. Paper should be a minimum of 1400 words.

No Late Papers will be accepted.

Some helpful advice on how to write these papers:

-Don’t fall in to the trap of writing a summary. While a little summary can and will be useful, I don’t want 1000 words which just spit back a sketch of the article. You have to answer the questions I pose.

-When you give an answer or state an opinion, it must be supported by specific examples from the article.

-When you use specific examples from the article, whether it be a direct quote or a close paraphrasing, you must use a citation. For this assignment that means a page number in parenthesis right after the quote or paraphrase (66). Every Essay should have citations.

-Remember, one of the things you are doing with this assignment is to convince me that you read and understand the entire article. Therefore, it’s in your best interest to write the paper using your words and ideas, with the support of the content of the article.

-Plagiarism is unacceptable in all forms. If you use someone else’s words or ideas you must make it clear using a citation. Please avoid the temptation to cut and paste text from a website into your papers. It is usually fairly obvious, and easy to confirm by scanning the paper into an anti-plagiarism site, or even simple web search.

Please be sure to read the instructions carefully.

    Answer all of the questions.

Be sure to reference the article using direct quotes and to provide pg#s in the assigned reading where your information (quotes and paraphrasing) can be found in the article. Every essay should have pg citations.

Make sure your pg#s match the assigned article. Use the published pg# not the pdf #.
