  • Black power essay

Please choose one of the following questions to address in your essay. Essays should be 4-5 double-spaced pages in length, must include a title and a thesis statement, and use specific examples from your course materials to support your assertions. All sources of information referenced in your paper should be cited using Turabian format footnotes and bibliography. Outside research may NOT be used for this assignment; however, you may reference any assigned readings, films, and class lectures to support your analysis.

Submissions that do not meet these basic requirements will NOT receive credit.

Essays will be evaluated based on the execution and effectiveness of your argument, analysis, and writing. Please write for a non-specialist audience and be sure to explain the historical context and your ideas fully. Essays that analyze specific examples from written texts and/or draw examples from multiple sources as evidence to support the argument will be more successful than essays that do not incorporate clear evidence or rely only on films or class lectures as sources.

Please save your essay in Microsoft Word (.doc or dox) or .pdf format

Read Prologue and Chapter 1 in third & fourth editions

Or Prologue, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2 to page 53 in second edition

Look at Code of Hammurabi and Merneptah Steele under Chapter 1 Blackboard Primary Source Readings

Answer any 2 of the following Week 1 essays :

    Prompts for week 1 questions:

You may use any resources at your disposal. List your sources at the end of each essay. Not all the answers to these questions are directly addressed in your text. Appropriately cite any sources if you are quoting or closely borrowing from an authors text (physical or electronic). Suggested length is 2 or more pages per question (450 to 750 words).

    1. Think about the various types of leadership and government in ancient Mesopotamian. How does this change over time? Write an essay about kingdoms controlled or ruled by the priesthood (Sumer), warrior kings (Akkad), and law-giver kings like Hammurabi (Babylon). Compare the three styles and how they were effective for each civilization. How does all of this effect the various social classes? Which type of leadership would you have preferred to live under if you were in ancient Mesopotamia?

    2. How does burial of the dead change over time in ancient Egypt? Compare the different processes (physical preparation) and places the dead are buried (in the ground, in pyramids, in the rock tombs like the Valley of the Kings). How is burial different among the nobility and common folk? What are some of the religious implications and expectations for afterlife that surround these burials?

    3. Compare the different types of writing used by Mesopotamians and Egyptians. Why do the Sumerians invent writing? How does cuneiform and its uses change over time? How about Egyptian writing? What happens to the hieroglyphs?

    4. Write an essay comparing Old, New, and Middle Kingdoms in ancient Egypt. What is distinct about each of the 3 periods?

(You might not find all of the information for some of these question in your text, so you might have to do a bit of outside research for a few.)

  • Primary Source/Podcast Response

Answer the following questions in short essay format. Remember, an A answer must

use evidence from the primary sources and podcast to develop your argument.
    1. What are the many reasons as to why Rose Davis could have and perhaps should
have won her case? In your view, which argument put forth by Mary Davis carried the
most weight in terms of securing her daughters freedom, and why?

    2. Why do you think Rose Davis lost her petition?

    3. Connect Rose Davis experience to the following statement found within the Backstory
podcast: It turns out the history of these first Africans arrival [to Virginia] is
anything but simple. What do the Backstory historians mean by this and where does
Rose Davis fit in that argument?

    4. Compare the Print of the Slave Ship Brookes from the year 1789 with what you
listened to in the podcast about the arrival of the first Africans to Virginia in 1619. What
are some notable differences between the two? When considering this question, evaluate
how slavery and the slave trade changed from 1619 to 1789. (Remember, use only
assigned materials to answer these questions.)
