  • Comparing the Four Colonial Regions

Write the similarities and differences between the four colonial regions of British North America. Students will articulate what they know about two regions of British North America. Assignment: This assignment asks students to choose two of the four regions of British North America and begin to describe their similarities and differences between 1607 and 1720. In your response to this question, discuss ethnic diversity, social class structure, and religion. 1) For students to understand the difference in settlement patterns from region to region within British North America (BNA). 2) For students to understand that both groups were hoping to profit in one form or another from their interactions with the other groups: the Europeans through the discovery and removal of raw materials back to the mother country with an indigenous labor force; the Indians through trade, as allies against other Indian foes, and as a potential source of new technologies. 3) For students to understand the labor systems that emerged during the seventeenth century from the search for wealth in the colonies. 4) For students to understand the origins of African slavery in North America. This was a rational economic choice on the part of Virginia and Carolina planters who recognized a drop in the availability of English laborers to replenish their workforces. 5) For students to understand the social and economic differences between the southern colonies and the northern colonies as a result of staple crop production; slave societies versus societies with slaves.
  • Assignment #1 Argumentative Essay Vaudeville

For this assignment you will need to read Vaudeville and the Making of Modern Entertainment, 1890 – 1925 by David Monod and write an argumentative essay using the book and materials from class to support your argument.

You must argue how public amusements in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries either benefited American society or was detrimental to American society. Do not argue both sides of the issue, pick one side and support it with examples.

Be sure to use specific examples from the book, lectures, and documentaries screened in class to support your argument about how these amusements either benefited or hurt American society. You must use at least two examples from the book and two examples from the in-class materials (lectures and documentaries) for a total of four examples. Quality of examples and explanation is more important than the quantity of examples.

Be sure to focus your papers on explaining how these amusements were either beneficial or detrimental to society rather than just describing your examples or describing beneficial or detrimental aspects. Explanation is more important than description.

Your papers should be 4 to 5 pages in length, typed and double spaced. You can cite materials from the lectures with just the lecture title, materials from the documentaries can be parenthetically cited with just the title of the film. Material from the book should be cited with the title of the book and the page number of the material. You do not need to use any outside sources, but if you do, a complete and full citation is necessary. A works cited page is not necessary.

For this essay you can use the two examples from the Vaudeville and the Making of Modern Entertainment book and then two examples from the coney island documentary video linked on youtube ->>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_sV6JPzWDQ

I would like to argue how public amusements were detrimental to American Society. Don’t argue the other side whatsoever the professor made a big deal about sticking to your side of the argument. THANK YOU!

  • How Noli Me Tangere reflects the condition of the Philippine…

The novel exposes the abuse of power by Spanish friars and officials, who controlled the government, church, and justice system. Characters like Padre Dmaso and Padre Salvi represent corrupt religious leaders who used their authority to oppress the people instead of serving them. Filipinos had little freedom and were often punished without fair trials.

It also shows social inequality, where Spaniards and wealthy Filipinos were favored, while ordinary Filipinos suffered poverty and discrimination. Characters such as Sisa and Elias symbolize the pain and struggles of the common people.

Through the story of Crisstomo Ibarra, Rizal reveals how peaceful reform was blocked by corruption and fear. Overall, Noli Me Tangere serves as a mirror of Philippine society under Spanish rule, exposing its injustices and awakening national consciousness.

  • History Question

The two images are some of the remnants of the OLMEC Civilization, the first civilization in America. This civilization is older than Mayan Civilization, Aztec, and Incas. One thing unique is that the stone heads depict the type of occupation and culture of the Olmec. The Olmec were sure to preserve their identity by revealing exactly how they looked and who they were in their sculpture.

Briefly answer these questions in your own words:

1.) In your own words describe the physical features of the objects

2.) Logically explain in your words why you believe these sculptures were made by blacks

3.) Why do you know little about this black civilization called Olmec?

    The Korean War and Memory

“Much of our early reading, particularly the Cumings book, has tried to explain what really happened in the Korean Waras an antidote, in some respects, to how the war is (mis)remembered in the United States and South Korea. Yet it is also important to assess public memory itself.

Please discuss one image of the Korean War and its ramifications for popular historical understanding as that image exists in public memory in the United States, South/North Korea, or some other location. An image, of course, can be true, false, partial, or something in between.

You may find it helpful to anchor the image you discuss in some concrete site, discourse, creative work, etc., in which it is manifest. In other words, I hope you can find and work from some example of your chosen image in the wild, rather than simply telling me what you think people think. Thus this paper encourages a mild bit of research, but on the order of pointing to a website, monument, novel, film, etc. Nonetheless, if you anchor your discussion in a source that can be cited, please do cite it.

Please be creative. Some of the tropes (e.g., the Korean War as the forgotten war in the US) and sites (the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall) can be a bit obvious, so if you centrally feature one of these you should at least try to come at it sideways in some fashion. If you can think of something less obvious, all the better. Feel free to run ideas by me.”

I added two sources that we already read in class but the assignment is not a general history paper. It focuses on how the Korean War is remembered or misremembered by the public. Include external sources tied to the chosen image. Proper citations required Chicago is fine with footnotes.

    Requirements: 2-3 pp., double spaced
