Secondary Source Analysis Essay: Women and the Origins of Patriarchy

    Purpose of the Essay

This essay asks you to compare and contrast how societies change over time and to analyze historical events in context, with particular attention to how gender, culture, religion, nationality, and social structures shape historical perspectives.

You will analyze secondary sources to examine the development of patriarchy in three ancient societies:

    • Ancient Mesopotamia
    • Ancient Egypt
    • Israel

Your task is not to summarize what you read, but to analyze the authors main arguments, evaluate the evidence they use, and use those ideas to support your own historical argument.

    Understanding Your Sources

Historians rely primarily on primary and secondary sources.

    • A primary source is created during the time period being studied (e.g., artifacts, laws, diaries, inscriptions).
    • A secondary source is created later by scholars who interpret and analyze primary sources.

For this essay, all assigned readings are secondary sources, even though they quote or use evidence from primary sources.

    Assigned Secondary Sources

You will work with three readings:

    1. World History Encyclopedia article:
    2. . Although encyclopedias are usually tertiary sources, this peer-reviewed article qualifies as a secondary source because it analyzes primary evidence (to see what evidence the author uses, see his bibliography at the end of the article).
    3. Women in World History, Vol. 1: Readings from Prehistory to 1500

Be aware: all secondary sources reflect authorial choices and biases, including which evidence is emphasized or omitted. Your analysis should focus on the authors interpretations, not on whether they tell the whole story.

    Central Question of the Essay

Using only the assigned readings, analyze what these authors argue about:

    • the roles of women
    • the development of patriarchy
    • and how womens lives differed across Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Israel

Approach the readings as a historian asking:

    • What claims are the authors making?
    • What evidence do they use?
    • How do these arguments help explain the emergence of patriarchy in these societies?

What This Essay Isand Is Not

    This essay IS:

    • An analysis of secondary sources
    • A narrative argument supported by evidence
    • An opportunity to show that you can identify and evaluate historians interpretations

    This essay is NOT:

    • A summary of the readings
    • A list of facts about women in the ancient world
    • A place to introduce outside or online sources

    Steps to Writing the Essay

    Step 1: Take Analytical Notes

    As you read each source:

    • Identify the authors main ideas
    • Note how each author explains womens roles and social status
    • Pay attention to similarities and differences across societies

Step 2: Connect the Authors Ideas

    Review your notes and ask:

    • How do the authors arguments relate to one another?
    • What do these readings collectively suggest about patriarchys origins?

    Step 3: Develop a Thesis

    Your thesis should:

    • Take a clear position on how patriarchy developed in these societies
    • Be based on the authors argumentsnot your personal opinion alone
    • Guide the structure of your essay

You have practiced thesis-building in discussions; apply that skill here.

    Evidence and Citation Requirements

    • You must include word-for-word quotations from each of the three readings
    • Quotes must be:
    • In quotation marks
    • Cited with Chicago-style footnotes
    • Paraphrased material that is not common knowledge must also be cited
    • Only footnotes are permitted
    • No MLA parenthetical citations
    • No endnotes

Pick two documents from the same week that have been assigned since Week one of the class. Answer the following questions in relation to the documents:

    1. Answer all of the questions that are found at the end of the document in the E-Companion reader.
    2. Who, what, when, where: Who is the author or authors. Do not simply give a name, give context about who this person was and what was happening in their lives at the time of the document. For example if you choose The Code of Hammurabi, consider what date the Code was completed, how far into his reign was this? Was he at war with anyone at the time, was his empire at peace? Also, If you choose a document that has an unknown author, like the Epic of Gilgamesh, contextualize the document in terms of the probable date of completion with what was happening in Mesopotamia at this time?
    3. What role did the document play in the historical development of western civilizations? For example, if you chose the Book of Exodus, you would want to consider the role that the development of monotheism had on western development.

Estimated Word Count: 700900 words total

    How that breaks down

You are analyzing two primary sources from the same week, and for both documents, you must answer:

    1. All end-of-document questions from the E-Companion
    2. Who / what / when / where (author + historical context)
    3. Historical significance to Western civilization

A strong structure usually looks like this:

    Document 1

    • Context (who/when/where/what): 200250 words
    • Answers to end-of-document questions: 100150 words
    • Historical significance: 150200 words

Total for Document 1: ~350450 words

    Document 2

    (Same breakdown)

Total for Document 2: ~350450 words

  • Cuban Communities in USA

Write a reflection on the topics and instructional materials covered this week. Your reflection paper:

    • Must be at least three pages long (could be more). You must dedicate at least 2 and a half pages to your summary and at least half a page to your reaction/reflections
    • Must have an introduction, body, and conclusion
    • Must be formatted correctly (12pt font, double space, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins)
    • Must be written in either MLA, APA, or Chicago Style Format, and use the style consistently
    • Must include proper citations (for direct quotes and paraphrased sections)
    • Must include a bibliography/works cited page (after the summary and reflection. The works cited page does not count towards the 3-page minum)

    Summary (2.5-page minimum)

    • What are the sources about? (summarize)
    • What arguments are the authors making?

Reflection (half-page minimum). Address either of the following:

    • Can you relate to the content discussed? If so, how? If you do not relate, do you know someone who can? (family, friend, peer, etc.). I’m cuban and I moved to Usa in 2021, other than that, you can mention a family or something like that

  • History Question

Choose one of the following questions (it should be the same question that you used in part I):

    1. To what extent can ghost tours function as meaningful sources of pubic engagement with the past? Use Tiya Miles and at least one other course reading to answer the question.
    2. How would you describe the current state of American public engagement with the past, and what are the implications for public historical work? Use the “History, the Past, and Public Culture” survey and at least one other course reading to answer the question.
    3. How important is provenance to the work that museums do? Use Deusen/Karakis and at least one other course reading to answer the question. You may also draw on examples from the Fowler to illustrate your work.

Write a paper of about 1,250 (5 pages). You can go 10% above or below the word count. Include your word count at the top of the page.

Your paper must engage with and reference at least 2 academic sources. Please note that for question 2, any interpretive sources associated with the survey (for example the Burkholder and Schaffer essay) do not count as your second source. You need a non-survey source for your second source.

You should use the readings from this course- see both the optional and required readings for weeks 1-3. You should not carry out additional research. Wikipedia and websites are not acceptable sources. Please footnote your paper, using the Chicago Manual of Style as your guide.

You will be graded on the following 5 criteria:

    1. Argument. Do you answer the question? Is there a main argument? Is it creative? You will need to focus- this is a relatively short paper, so you cannot cover everything!

    2. Analysis. Is your argument sustained? Is your paper analytical rather than descriptive? Are arguments supported with evidence? Consideration of counter-arguments and evidence. A focused paper that makes good use of evidence is better than a broad, vague paper.

    3. Knowledge and use of sources. Have you chosen good sources and are they used appropriately? Are you examples well chosen? Engagement with themes and readings from the course. Do you demonstrate awareness of the bias and limitations of sources?

    4. Writing and prose. Is it well written? Is it well structured? Clarity of prose; effective use of paragraphs, punctuation, and footnotes.

    5. Length. 1,250 words. Include your word count at the top of the first page.

I picked question 2. I have an outline for the essay and she gave comments on the outline. I want a very well-written paper that adheres to my thesis, the above guidelines, and makes the necessary corrections that she left on my outline. I have attached said outline for reference. Please use it. I have also attached her comments as a screenshot. Please let me know if you have any questions!!!

    Requirements: roughly 1,200 words

  • Critical Commentary 2

A critical commentary is a short essay that introduces a historical document. It provides basic information about what the document is, what cultural and historical context influenced its author in creating it, and why youthe historianbelieve it was important, convincing, effective, or ineffective. Your commentary will be evaluated on your selection of direct evidence, creativity of interpretation, depth of historical context, and clarity of language. For each critical commentary, you will write about a primary source document of your choice. Please choose ONE of the documents from the list below If you’re having trouble figuring out where to start, the questions and prompts on this may be helpful.

Your commentary should include a thesis statement and make an argument about the source. For more info, check out this .

Please click the “Requirements and Scoring” tab at the top of this page for information on how to complete this assignment

    Requirements and Scoring

Papers will be scored on the following criteria (150 points total):

    STYLE (25 points)

    • Requirements:
      • 700-900 words plain 11- or 12-point font
      • Include a meaningful title
      • Identify the name, author, and date of the document
      • Clear thesis statement near the beginning of the essay
        • Clear thesis statement near the beginning of the essay
          • For more on how to write a thesis statement, check out these resources:
      • Consist of multiple readable paragraphs
      • Your commentary should give your reader a sense of the documents style through the use of at least three direct quotations, properly quoted
        • Quotations should not be longer than 1-2 lines
    • Do NOT include:
      • Title page
      • Text that youve copied and pasted from elsewhere without properly quoting and citing your source
      • AI-generated text
    • Choose quotes that are:
      • brief, relevant to your point, and especially interesting or colorful. Use ellipses (…) or interrupt quotations to omit irrelevant parts of a quote, and paraphrase long or uninteresting quotes. Cite sources parenthetically, with as much information as is needed for someone else to track them down.
        • In his speech on New Freedom, President Wilson claimed that “the program of a government of freedom must in these days be positive, not negative merely” (Wilson, 1912).
        • Historians agree that Lincolns attitude toward colonization shifted over the course of the war (American Yawp, Ch 14).

    IDENTIFICATION (25 points)

Provide a succinct and accurate summary of the document, including relevant details about its date and place of origin, authorship, genre, and argument or purpose.

    CONTEXT (50 points)

Identify the broader historical context of the document and explain its relationship to the societal issues or events of its era. What is the historical big picture that your reader must grasp in order to properly understand the document? What was the authors purpose in creating the document? Include convincing quotes, information from the textbook and lecture, or other course materials to demonstrate this.

Tip: each of these primary source documents correspond to a specific chapter in the textbook, which will provide helpful context. To find out which chapter your document pairs with, look in the URL/web address. For example, the URL for Henry George’s Progress and Poverty is http://www.americanyawp.com/reader/16-capital-and-labor/henry-george-progress-and-poverty-selections-1879/. Since the URL includes “16-capital-and-labor”, you know that it goes with Chapter 16.

    ANALYSIS (50 points)

Clearly state your evaluation of the authors argument or purpose in your thesis statement. What does the author mean? What were they trying to accomplish? Who is their intended audience? Why is this source historically significant? Do you agree with the author’s position? Are they leaving out important details? In the body of the paper, prove your thesis with convincing detail from the document and its historical context.

Remember, historical analysis is different than literary analysis! Tools from your English or Rhetoric classes like pathos/logos/ethos are not particularly useful here. In History, primary source analysis focuses more on what a source can tell us about the past, both on a micro scale (what was happening with these individuals?) and on a macro scale (does this source give us larger insights into history?).

Note: Be careful to address the opinion of the author, not simply the general topic of the document. e.g. Your opinion of the Emancipation Proclamation should be less concerned with whether slavery was right or wrong, and more concerned with whether Lincoln made the right choice to issue it when and how he did.

    Sample outline

If you are not sure how to structure your commentary, this sample outline might be a helpful guide. You are not required to follow this format, it is just one way of approaching the assignment.

    • Paragraph 1: Introduction
      • Who created this document? When?
      • What kind of document is this (newspaper article, speech, letter, etc.)?
      • Who is the intended audience?
      • Why is it historically significant? (i.e. why do we care?)
      • What else was going on at this time that would be helpful to know when reading this document (historical context)?
    • Paragraph 2: Summary
      • What are the key points in the document?
      • What is the author trying to communicate? What is their perspective?
      • this paragraph is a good place to include quotations
    • Paragraph 3: Analysis
      • Does the author do a good job presenting their case?
      • Is this source reliable? What are its limitations?
      • Do you agree with the author’s points? Why or why not?
      • Concluding sentence: why does this matter? How can it contribute to our understanding of history?

    Requirements: 700-900 words
