Writing Prompt In an essay of at least 1500 words, describe a specific insight or awareness about the human condition that you’ve gleaned from any two pieces of literature that we have read in this class thus far this term. In literature classes, we often discuss what the texts suggests about “The Human Condition Links to an external site..” While this term might seem confusing, don’t over think it! It basically refers to anything that makes us human. In fact, even though I had not brought up the term until just now, you all have been discussing the literature we’ve been reading in terms of what it suggests about the human condition: We’ve thought about a soldier’s sense of duty, a husband’s disillusionment with his marriage, a mother’s complicated feelings about her newborn, a teenager’s challenges as she moves through the process of maturation. These all are aspects of the human condition. When you write your essay, avoid using the phrase “the human condition”; I think you’ll agree this phrasing is unclear and a bit awkward. Rather, simply use the language of your topic (for example, a soldier’s sense of duty, a husband’s disillusionment with his marriage, a mother’s complicated feelings about her newborn, etc.). The thesis concept should provide a comparison of how the works of literature impart similar meaning, or how the works of literature offer different perspectives on a similar theme. Specific points of your essay should reflect your understanding of the six elements of fiction we’ve been studying and other literary devices. Be sure to include a works cited page in which you list your two primary texts. Requirements: Your essay should be at least 1500 words and have an engaging introduction and conclusion. I already have my outline and first paragraph done Both The Rocking-Horse Winner and Woman Hollering Creek expose cultural expectations that identify wealth and marriage with fulfillment, pressuring individuals to sustain the illusion of success, at the expense of emotional well-being. In D.H. Lawrences The Rocking-Horse Winner, Paul is raised in a home where love feels transactional, shaped by his mothers belief that money is essential to happiness. Although the family lives a comfortable lifestyle, his mother, Hester, repeatedly represents herself as “unlucky, identifying luck with financial success rather than emotional fulfillment (Lawrence). Her dissatisfaction isn’t a private affair, it echoes chaotically throughout the entire household. The house came to be filled with the unspoken words: There must be more money! There must be more money! (Lawrence), converts financial anxiety into a constant reality that defines the family. Instead of the home providing comfort, it becomes a space littered with pressure and expectations. Paul is under illusion by believing that if he becomes lucky, and wins money, that he can earn his mothers affection and return to harmony. Similarly, in Sandra Cisneross Woman Hollering Creek, Clefilas enters marriage believing it will fulfill the romantic ideal she has once longed for. Influenced by the telenovelas she watches, the romantic novels she reads, and the songs she sings, she longs for, the kind the books and songs and telenovelas describe when one finds, finally, the great love of ones life, and does whatever one can, must do, at whatever the cost (Cisneros 220). To Clefilas, marriage first feels like proof she has done everything right. A visible achievement, a symbol proving that she attained the life she is meant to have, something she can point to on her finger, a statement others can see and admire. As her marriage continues the excitement she once imagined, dimmed and is replaced by silence and isolation. What once was seemed as fulfillment slowly becomes something restrictive, highlighting that what looks successful from the outside is not always secure within. Through Paul and Clefilas, both of the stories unveil how these cultural expectations of wealth and marriage can push individuals to value the illusion of success rather than their own emotional stability. Texts: The Rocking Horse Winner by D. H. Lawrence and Woman Hollering Creek by Sandra Cisneros Thesis: D.H. Lawrences The Rocking Horse Winner and Sandra Cisneross Woman Hollering Creek demonstrate that when individuals are guided to seek fulfillment through money or marriage, they become confined within an arrangement that prioritizes appearance over well-being, often at great personal sacrifice. Topic sentence #1 : Both The Rocking Horse Winner and Woman Hollering Creek unveil cultural norms promoting wealth and marriage as sources of gratification, motivating individuals to prioritize appearances of success over their emotional stability Support 1: In The Rocking Horse Winner Paul’s mother views happiness with financial success, always being dissatisfied with her life, despite having wealth already, which motivates her son, Paul to make money to try and make his mother happy. Support 2: Lawrence embodies the house as whispering for more money, symbolizing the constant strain to maintain and uphold the financial burden, while ignoring the emotional well being of others. Support 3: In Woman Hollering Creek, Cisnero highlights Clefilla’s marriage as a socially approved image of contentment, she enjoys being culturally valued even at the expense of her own emotional fulfillment. Topic sentence #2 :Lawrence and Cisnero both show how money and marriage, once imagined as sources of fulfillment, can become confining rather than sources of love. Support 1: In The Rocking Horse Winner Paul’s entire childhood is defined by the anxiety to make money, turning financial stress into a burden instead of a genuine expression of parental love. Support 2: In Woman Hollering Creek Cleofila’s marriage confines her to an emotionally isolating relationship, where love is replaced by silence and loneliness. Support 3: Both authors dramatize confinement through use of setting, Lawrence places Paul in a money hungry household, while Cisnero secludes Cleofila in an emotionally draining domestic space, reinstating the idea that fulfillment can become a form of imprisonment. Topic sentence #3: The authors in both stories suggest that people would rather endure suffering, rather than abandoning the versions of fulfillment that we are taught to desire. Support 1: In The Rocking Horse Winner Paul endlessly pushes himself to earn money, regardless of his physical exhaustion and emotional harm in order to maintain the belief that financial success is necessary for love. Support 2: In Woman Hollering Creek Cleaofila stays in her marriage even as it becomes emotionally and physically harmful, demonstrating her willingness to endure suffering to keep up with the socially valued image as a wife. Support 3: Paul ultimately collapses under the pressure of his desire for more money, while Cleofila continues to suffer in her marriage until outside assistance allows her to escape and re-claim her freedom.

  • The Glass Menagerie

—The essay should be at least 3 full pages, not including any title page (which is optional) or works cited page. —In addition to any primary texts (the play, the short stories, and Williams’s essays), you must use at least two secondary sources from the SCC library. Library sources must come from credible, peer-reviewed journals or books (no magazines, newspapers, blogs, random websites, etc – as always, you may check with me to determine whether or not a particular source is viable). You may use the documentary Wounded Genius as one of your sources, but it must be integral to your argument (i.e. not used as a passing reference). —Make sure your paper (and its thesis) argues a point about the text(s), and does not just read as a factual report on the readings from class. Your paper should be academic in nature, i.e. not a personal essay. The use of you and I is discouraged (statements such as I believe and in my opinion are redundantthis is your paper, and so I assume these are your beliefs and opinions). —The essay must be in proper MLA format. Make sure you take the time to verify whether or not your MLA is correct. —With that said, all sources must be documented, even the primary text. If using the supplementary sources I provided, please note that all necessary citation information is in the PDF, and be sure you cite it properly. If you need help with MLA, I encourage you to consult with the Purdue OWL MLA GuideLinks to an external site. —Please review the Academic Dishonesty/Integrity/Plagiarism guidelines in the syllabus. ——- Prompts (choose one–for this assignment you may not create your own): 1) Choose one of the following themes in The Glass Menagerie, and craft an argument about how it is represented in the play: illusion vs. reality; abandonment; war and strife; memory; absence vs presence; family and relationships; coming of age 2) Discuss how The Glass Menagerie mirrors Tennessee Williams’ own life, and what these autobiographical elements do for the effectiveness of the play. 3) Research the historical context of The Glass Menagerie, and how it contributes to an understanding of the play. 4) In Scene 1 of The Glass Menagerie, the playwright says: The scene is memory and is therefore nonrealistic. Later, Tom, in his opening speech, discusses the ultimate aim of this method of presentation. Discuss the playwright’s intention in presenting his work in this manner. 5) Discuss how “Portrait of a Girl in Glass” interacts with and departs from The Glass Menagerie, and how an understanding of one leads to a more sophisticated understanding of the other with respect to symbolism, theme, characterization, or autobiography (please note that you will still need to obtain the required number of secondary sources). 6) Discuss how the theme of fatherhood and the motif of fathers operate throughout at least two of Williams’ texts (The Glass Menagerie, “The Man in the Overstuffed Chair” and/or “Portrait of a Girl in Glass”). EXAMPLE ESSAY

While theres a lot going on in the seemingly simple story Hills Like White Elephants, one of the things that I focused on when reading, re-reading, and thinking about it was the passage of time. It looks like Hemingway really wanted us to be aware of time, because he writes in the beginning that the train is coming in forty minutes, and at the end its indicated that the train will be there in five minutes. So, give or take, were looking at a story thats supposed to take a bit more than a half hour. Thats interesting for several reasons.

First, they drink. They order three big beers and a mixed drink, and the man has another mixed drink when he moves the bags. Thats 4-5 drinks in a half hour. Thats a lot. So then you think, why would somebody drink that much? Its not like theyre at a party or something, so theyre probably drinking to pass the time and to dull reality. If theyre drinking that much to pass the time, theres probably something missing or awkward in their relationship. And if theyre drinking to dull reality, theres also probably something wrong. This seems to be one of the ways Hemingway is showing us the reality of this couples situation without having to go right out and say it.

Also interesting is how much silence there must be. It only took me about five minutes to read this entire story, yet it supposed to take 35 minutes to transpire. If were going to assume that Hemingway did this intentionally, that means that while this couple was waiting, there must have been quite lot of silence. Actually, if you look closely, you can see where time probably passed. In other words, he writes that they take a sip of the beer, then the next thing theyre talking about is ordering another drink. Theyre probably not ordering another drink if their beers are full, so that means that during that time, which Hemingway doesnt describe, they must have finished their drinks in silence. Thats another sure sign that theres a problem.

The point of this is that even if the dialogue was different or didnt hint at problems between the two, the subtle use of time would give away that something wasnt working between them.

    Mini Essay 2

Again, we will be working with different styles of essays throughout the semester. For week 2, please write what I call a casual mini-essay on one of the stories. In some ways, its not too different from the essay you wrote for last week. Its still an analysis (not summary) of one aspect of one of the stories, and its still not about you. You want to make a point that is supported by evidence from the text.

But this time, you dont have to focus on making the essay fit into the mold of an academic paper. Rather, try to use your own voice and style. In other words, if you feel it would be effective to not directly state a thesis, fine, dont do it. Dont try to use words you wouldnt normally use in everyday life, but rather shift the focus entirely toward making an interesting point in your own style. only write about the I stand here ironing

  • Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” analysis focusing on Mrs. Ma…

Literary workshop on Chopin’s “the story of an hour” There are short answer questions that I will provide and the following is a requirement as well Generating Topics: Generate an essay topic by analyzing your initial response to The Story of an Hour. Read Identifying Topics in the Writing about Literature section of this website, paying particular attention to the paragraph titled Analyze your initial response. Return to your earliest notes on the story and think about what moments, aspects, or elements of the text affected you. How did you feel about Mrs. Mallard and her experience? Did you sympathize with her? Why or why not? Did the story challenge your assumptions or values? What lines or expressions contributed to your reaction? Use your insights to develop a topic question that you could address in an analytical essay. Close Reading Exercise: The words abandoned and abandonment are repeated in the story. Write a one- or two-page response in which you examine the significance of these words. What are the different definitions of the word abandon? What connotations are associated with the word? How is the word used differently at different moments in the story? What does it mean that Mrs. Mallards sense of self-possession comes only after she unwillingly abandons herself to the thing that was approaching to possess her? How does the diction affect our sense of the level of Mrs. Mallards active participation in her own discovery of freedom? Research Exercise: The narrator tells us near the end of the story that Mrs. Mallard unwittingly moved like a goddess of Victory after she emerged from her room. Research the mythology surrounding Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. How is she depicted? What qualities does she stand for? How is this reference relevant to the character of Mrs. Mallard? You might also research images of Nike, particularly the sculpture known as Winged Victory now in the collection of the Louvre.

The Hemingway PDF is the official book we are required to use for the class. The screenshot outlines the rules and the topic we need to write about; while it is not explicitly mentioned in the syllabus, it is posted bi-weekly. Paper 1 is my original work for the first assignment, for which I received a grade of 100. This paper can serve as a model for both the writing style and format. Paper 2 is what I have worked on so far; however, it can be modified or kept the same to align more closely with Paper 1.
