You see this as a potential opportunity for growth in your career. You have decided to come up with some solutions to address the issue. If the leadership is impressed with your presentation, it could mean a promotion for you.

How does selective perception influence the way managers interpret workplace situations, and what strategies can help reduce this bias?

Verywell Mind explains that selective perception is a bias where people focus on information that supports their beliefs and overlook anything that contradicts them. Because of this, two people can see the same situation and walk away with completely different interpretations.

elective perception can impact a manager’s judgement, often without them realizing their view is being filtered. A manager might focus more on mistakes from an employee they already view as “difficult” while overlooking similar mistakes from someone they see as a top performer.

This can impact performance evaluations, influence promotions and even shape team morale. This can distort performance evaluations, influence promotions, and even shape team morale. On the flip side, it would make decision-making less rational because the manager is not evaluating the full picture but only the parts that confirm their assumptions.

This concept shows how easily biases can slip into everyday actions, even when someone believes they are being objective.

Why do you think the DunningKruger Effect can be especially dangerous in leadership or decisionmaking roles?

The DunningKruger Effect is a cognitive bias in which individuals with low knowledge or skill in a particular area significantly overestimate their competence, while individuals with higher levels of expertise may underestimate their own abilities. This bias occurs because people who lack skill in a domain also lack the metacognitive ability to recognize their own limitations. In other words, they do not know enough to realize what they do not know.

What makes the DunningKruger Effect especially compelling is that it creates a “double burden”: not only do lowperforming individuals make errors, but their overconfidence prevents them from seeking feedback or improvement. At the same time, more competent individuals tend to assume tasks are easier for others than they actually are, leading them to undervalue their own expertise or remain silent in group settings.

This effect has been observed across many domains, including education, leadership, workplace decisionmaking, healthcare, and public discourse. In professional environments, it can contribute to poor decisions, resistance to training, and misplaced authority, particularly when confidence is mistaken for competence. Awareness of the DunningKruger Effect is often considered a critical step toward improving selfassessment, learning, and effective leadership.

Both Creativity and Innovation are important to managers when problem solving and decision making.

Imagine that you’re vacuuming your house in a hurry because you’ve got friends coming over. Frustratingly, you’re working hard but you’re not getting very far. You kneel down, open up the vacuum cleaner, and pull out the bag. In a cloud of dust, you realize that it’s full… again. Coughing, you empty it and wonder why vacuum cleaners with bags still exist!

James Dyson, inventor and founder of Dyson vacuum cleaners, had exactly the same problem, and he used creative problem solving to find the answer. While many companies focused on developing a better vacuum cleaner filter, he realized that he had to think differently and find a more creative solution. So, he devised a revolutionary way to separate the dirt from the air, and invented the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner.

Creative problem solving (CPS) is a way of solving problems or identifying opportunities when conventional thinking has failed. It encourages you to find fresh perspectives and come up with innovative solutions, so that you can formulate a plan to overcome obstacles and reach your goals.

Over the last few decades, innovation and creativity have become critical skills for achieving success in developed economies. The need for creative problem solving has arisen as more and more management problems require creative insights in order to find suitable solutions.

The companies that have done the best over the long haul are those who are the most creative and innovative. These organizations dont copy what others do; instead, they may use innovative ideas from others as a spring board to come up with a unique application, product, or service for themselves. They tend to distance themselves from the competition rather than compete with them. If they see another company copying what they do, they create something new and better. In other words, they are able to leverage their creativity and their innovative capabilities to attain long-term success.

Creativity goes hand in hand with innovation. And there is no innovation without creativity. While creativity is the ability to produce new and unique ideas, innovation is the implementation of that creativity – that’s the introduction of a new idea, solution, process, or product. Creativity is the driving force behind innovation and the incorporation of looking at things from a different perspective and freedom of restrictions by rules and written or unwritten norms.

        Discussion Prompts:

        • What is the difference between creativity and innovation?
        • How can you develop creative and innovative mindset? Apply it to your decision making and problem solving efforts?
        • What do you think are the most common hindrances to creative/innovative problem-solving and decision-making? How can managers overcome them?
        • Are creativity and innovation really important to all types of businesses and managing all types of workers? Why or why not?
