  • Insight Questions

Insight Questions: This assignment looks deceptively easy; you may be surprised how much time and effort it takes to come up with five truly insightful discussion questions! First, do a careful reading of Chapter 9 — your only assigned chapter this week — on the health care principle of Role Fidelity. Make sure to thoroughly review the links and attachments it contains, (particularly the section on professional boundaries in nursing), and take the chapter quiz. Then, write a paragraph explaining professional boundaries and why it is so important for health care professionals to stay within these boundaries.

Finally, create your insight questions [Examples of bad questions: “What are professional boundaries?”, “What role does the Ethics board at a hospital play?” “Is it ok for a nurse to sleep with their patient?” Example of good questions: “If a health care professional performs an act that is against the rules, but that stemmed from a good intention, should that affect our moral judgment about the act?”, “If the family of a group home resident where you work offers you free concert tickets to take special care of their relative, what kind of ethical problems could this cause?” “Would attending the funeral of a beloved patient somehow be boundary-breaking?” I’m sure you can see the difference!] Keep in mind that questions should not revolve around the policy and operational issues in health care institutions, but should be original ideas that concern the ethical concept of Professional Boundaries for individual practitioners in health care. This assignment is due next Tuesday; make them good — like on something you’d want to get into stimulating discussion about regarding professional boundaries. For a question or two, you could use a personal example or create a scenario where an ethical issue may arise around boundaries. You could ask about the appropriateness of an action. You could ponder the outcome of certain actions or constraints on those actions. Picture yourself in a lively conversation on the ethical issues involved here. What kinds of questions are you asking to keep that conversation engaging? There is no need to answer the questions; just ask them!

There is a significant problem in inconsistent emergency response preparedness for medically fragile students, particularly regarding seizure management, tracheostomy emergencies, and anaphylaxis. While emergency care plans are in place, staff members vary in their confidence and competency in responding to acute events, which may delay timely intervention and compromise student safety.
