Future Directions in Applied Behavior Analysis

This assignment assesses the following Course Outcomes:

PS558-4: Examine the historical perspectives and current developments in applied behavior analysis and professional practice.

PS558-5: Describe the dimensions of applied behavior analysis.

PC-4.3: Apply concepts of cultural competence to become an agent of change.

Developments and the Future of Applied Behavior Analysis

Through the second half of this course, you have had the opportunity to trace the development of applied behavior analysis from the latter part of the twentieth century to the present. This assignment will offer you the opportunity to examine those developments and how applied behavior analysis continues to evolve while remaining rooted in its foundations in science and the philosophy of behaviorism.

For this assignment, you will provide a long-answer essay response to each of the questions below. For each question, you are encouraged to use the peer-reviewed resources provided throughout the units to support your responses. Please do not copy and paste the whole question into the document. Rather, use APA format section headings to organize your paper, with separate sections for each question. Use the rubric and the assignment prompts as guides to be sure you address all topics.

    Please respond to the following:

    • Begin the assignment by reading the (Leaf, et al. 2022) article, which describes some recent critical perspectives and misconceptions on the use of ABA to treat individuals with autism and other disabilities: Then, use the knowledge that you have gained from this course to make two arguments.
      • In your first argument, explain the usefulness, benefits, and social validity of ABA as an approach to treatment and behavioral development. Be sure to consider the importance of an evidence-based and data-driven approach and the right to effective treatment as described in (Van Houten et al., 1988).
      • In your second argument, respond to some of the concerns addressed in this article.
      • What are some possible unwanted effects that may be associated with practice of ABA, particularly in its earliest historical use? What are some ways the authors suggest these concerns can be addressed?
      • Finally, after considering both arguments, present a supported conclusion on the appropriateness of applied behavior analysis as a socially valid treatment approach to improve quality of life, based on your analysis of the article and related issues. Be sure that you are using your readings and integrating citations to support both arguments.
    • Name and briefly describe five recent developments in ABA that were reviewed in the course.
      • Explain how the philosophy and practice of ABA has evolved with each development and include a specific example for each.
      • Briefly recap each of Baer et al.s (1968) seven dimensions of ABA.
      • Choose one recent development that is of most interest to you and be specific about how the development meets the requirement for each of the seven dimensions. Discuss if there are any ways in which the development does not support the dimensions.
    • Consider the future of ABA. Based on your readings and analysis, what are some important areas for growth and change?
      • Consider the current state of multiculturalism and diversity in practice. Provide a thoughtfully supported prediction of how growth in these areas helps to build relationships to effectively support the goals and practices of applied behavior analysis.
      • Analyze ways in which the goals and philosophical assumptions of ABA, as a related set of underpinnings, will allow for continued development and expansion without sacrificing the scientific foundations of ABA.
      • In your supported opinion (i.e., using your readings for support), what are some important areas in which ABA should not change? Your assignment should be 810 pages, not including the title and reference pages, and should include the following elements:
        • Title Page: Provide the assignment title, your name, course and section number, instructor name, and date.
        • Body: Include an introductory and a concluding paragraph. Answer all the questions in complete sentences and paragraphs, using appropriate personal and professional insights.
          • The assignment must be written in Standard English and demonstrate superior organization, including a highly developed viewpoint and purpose that is clearly established and sustained. The communication of your thoughts must be highly ordered, logical, and unified, displaying exceptional content, organization, style, and mechanics (including the use of correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure).
          • Your responses should meet professional writing standards, using proper tone and language. The writing and writing style should be correct and accurate and reflect knowledge of applied behavior analysis.
        • Reference Page: Sources listed in APA format.
          • Include a minimum of five scholarly peer-reviewed sources to support your responses and conclusions.
        • Use Arial or Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced and left aligned.
        • Use standard 1″ margins on all sides.
        • Use current APA formatting and citation style.

    Here is the first discussion

Values can oftentimes be seen as an interwoven variable within the issue of sexuality and gender ( Tshomo, 2024). Values can oftentimes set the stage for the position an individual chooses to take on something. If someone holds firm religious values, for example, they are more likely to reflect on what their religious texts say before forming a stance on something. This is incredibly true in regards to sexuality and gender.

For me, the interview with Dr. Timothy Stauffer was incredibly impactful. I enjoyed how the statistics regarding sexual trauma were reviewed in addition to them taking specific note of the impact that sexual trauma has on individuals. The most impactful portion to me was when Dr. Stauffer discussed how it is not necessarily important what your views on sexuality might be, but how you hold them. To me, this was a brilliant perspective on truly being a Christian. The way Dr. Stauffer discussed how he had experienced clients that had previously been spoken to about the topic in cruel and abusive ways was very impactful. I personally believe that more damage can be done than good when someone uses their beliefs in hurtful ways against another person. In the field of healing and mental health, this is such an important viewpoint to take home!

In describing gender and sexuality in both a biblical and non-biblical perspective, I would be sure to keep section A.4.b. Personal Values, of the ACA Code of Ethics, in mind. I think that this section is especially important because it ensures that mental health professionals are not promoting a certain set of beliefs as a cure and are holding their beliefs correctly, similarly to how Dr. Stauffer exemplified. From a biblical perspective, I would stay as close to a biblical definition as possible, using examples of how God created man and woman and their purpose. Additionally, I would ensure to include scripture that exemplifies how God supports equality. For example, Galations 3:28 states, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” From a non-biblical perspective, I would explain the biological makeup of men and women and then move into describing how society has a variety of roles, some of which are played by women more often and some of which are played by men more often. This could lead into a greater discussion of the specific societal norms than the individual finds issues with and could lead into deconstructing them in order to find a specific issue to focus on.

    Here is the second discussion

Values are the beliefs or standards that an individual uses to guide them in their life. When dealing with the values in issues of sexuality and gender you must realize that often times in counseling it can be one-sided because of religion and other things. Sexuality is one of the fundamental drives behind everyones feelings, thoughts, and behaviors (Lucas & Fox, n.d.) Because of this counselor should be ready for the clients to come in with issues and other problems that may be outside of the normal sessions. Therefore, in order to best care for clients, Christian counselors must be equipped to face these concerns and choose to not engage in religious, cultural, or political battles with their clients regardless of the differences between the clients and counselors values. (King, 2024, p.328)

When listening to Dr. Timothy Stauffer he spoke a lot about dealing with people who are not only broken in spirit but they are fighting to be understood because of their sexuality. This can be a very hard place to be and even try to find a counselor who can not only understand where you are without judgement. The most significant takeaway from the interview is that counselors will have to create a plan or treatment that allows the patient to be able to express themselves without having to take on the counselors ideas or way of thinking. When you deal with Christian counseling you can often receive very religious based treatment. This can cause more damage to the patient than help. When the counselor allows the treatment to fit the patient and the issue that they are battling it produces a better outcome. Counselors can benefit from and enrich their clients lives by understanding that sexual wellness is wellness and that pleasure is an act of self-care (Brewer & Tolbert, 2023).

A biblical perspective of gender states that man and woman were created in the image of God. With this stated men and women are made to procreate to continue to have children who can carry on the legacy. Because we know that God is relational in nature we are meant to also be in relations with each other. The non biblical perspective states that love is love and you can love anyone no matter their sex. You are able to express your love in any manner with whomever or whatever you please. This perspective also states that you can chose whichever gender you want. This can be your choice because as humans we have freewill. We take what is meant for intimacy and safety and use it to meet our own ends at best and cause intentional harm at worst (King, 2024, p.330).

  • Observing Human Development in Action

This assignment aligns with CLOs #4 and 5 and should take approximately 30-60 minutes.

    Introduction

The purpose of this assignment is for you to connect developmental theories (Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson, and Kohlberg) to real-world examples of how children and adolescents think, behave, and interact.

    Assignment Options (Choose ONE)

    • Option 1 Direct Observation

Observe a child or adolescent that you know, with parental consent if needed. This could be a family member, neighbor, or friend. Take notes on their behavior, language, play, or problem-solving.

    • Option 2 Video/Film Analysis

If you dont have access to a child, choose a video, documentary, or movie that includes scenes of a child or adolescent. Examples include: Inside Out (child emotions), Matilda (early school-age development), Wonder (peer relationships and social identity), Boyhood or The Florida Project (adolescent development). You may also use YouTube clips, educational documentaries, or parenting videos.

    Instructions

    Write a short 1/2 – 1-page report (about 200400 words) that includes:

    1. Description of the child/adolescent:

Approximate age, setting, and key behaviors observed.

    1. Connections to theory:

Identify two developmental theories (e.g., Piagets stage, Vygotskys ZPD, Eriksons psychosocial stage, or Kohlbergs moral reasoning) and explain how they relate to what you observed.

    1. Teaching implications:

Reflect on how understanding this behavior would help you as a future teacher. In other words, how would you support or challenge this students development?

  • An Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis

There is an interesting history in the development and evolution of the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and our science continues to change and evolve as does the society in which we live. In the text, Applied Behavior Analysis, Cooper et al. (2020) describe Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as “a science devoted to understanding and improving human behavior” (p. 2). This course will introduce you to the basic foundation of concepts and principles that underlie the science and goals of ABA.

For this discussion, you will read pages 19-23 in Cooper et al., 2020, the introductory chapter in Case Studies in Applied Behavior Analysis for Students and Adults with Disabilities, and review resources and information at the page.

    • At the BACB web site, watch the introductory video “About Behavior Analysis.” At the same site, review the fact sheets on subspecialties of practice in ABA (there are also videos associated with these fact sheets which you may want to review).
    • After your review, choose three subspecialties in ABA. Describe the goals of each of these subspecialties and discuss how practice in these areas supports the Cooper et al. (2020) description of ABA.
    • Finally, refer to Figure 1.3 (Improving people’s quality of life from A to Z) in chapter 1 of Cooper et al. (2020). Considering the historical perspective provided in the Watson (1913) reading and the futuristic perspective described by Bailey (2000), along with the overview of the goals of ABA presented by Storey and Haymes (2017), discuss how practice in these varied areas contributes to a “science devoted to understanding and improving human behavior” (Cooper et al., 2020). Be sure to use the various readings and resources to support your work throughout.

Review two of your classmates’ responses using following ideas as a guide:

    • How do the areas of specialization discussed support the goals of ABA?
    • Do the historically supported goals of ABA remain relevant as the field continues to evolve?
    • Ask at least one thoughtful follow up question.\
    • Your active participation in the weekly discussions is important to the shared learning experience. Active discussions will also develop your community of professionals. Please participate as early in the week as possible to help promote a robust discussion. After you have completed the readings, post your initial response to the following discussion. Your post should respond to all parts of the topic(s) in complete sentences, and should extend the discussion of the group by including original thoughts or ideas with support from multiple academic outside sources and/or course materials, correctly using APA style, both in-text and complete reference at the end of the post. After you have submitted your initial post, review other posts and respond to multiple classmates. Your response to other classmates should ask follow-up questions or provide additional ideas that expand on the topic. Be sure to post your responses over multiple days throughout the unit week as this helps promote a real discussion. Refer to your Discussion Board Rubric for a specific grading explanation.

Section A) Identify what you believe are Greenvale Correctional Facilitys key issues. Explain your assessment process and the factors you considered during your analysis. Be sure to include how organizational culture affects assessment in organizations.

Reading: Organizational culture is so ubiquitous that it affects all areas of group life. Though organizational culture is not always immediately obvious in organizations, its outcomes (e.g., turnover, morale, productivity) can be. Some workplaces require employees to wear business attire whereas others allow employees to dress casually. In some workplaces, formal address is used and in others, people use first names regardless of position. Both examples reflect organizational norms, or the way we do things around here, otherwise known as organizational culture . Organizational culture may be subtle yet pervasive and may have a profound effect on employee attitudes and behavior.

Organizational culture affects each of the levels of organizational assessment: individual, small group, large group, intergroup, and organization. As an organizational consultant or practitioner, it is beneficial to have a toolbox of assessments for organizational evaluation for each of these levels. By assessing organizational culture, practitioners and consultants can then develop evidence-based interventions to address the issues identified by the assessment and evaluation processes.

Consider how the information above may be applied to the Greenvale Correctional Facility case study that follows. Greenvale Correctional Facility is a large, privately-owned, medium-security prison in the southeastern United States. The prison opened in 1988, and, until recently, it employed 300 security, operational, facilities, maintenance, healthcare, and administrative employees.

The prisons salary and benefit structure are comparable to other prison systems around the country. However, Greenvale is currently experiencing significant attrition, creating an unsafe and unstable environment, both for the inmates and remaining employees. Staff has been reduced from 300 to 210 employees during the last 6 months, and attempts to recruit and hire new staff have been challenging. Online recruitment, employee sourcing, and participation in various job fairs have not created a plentiful base of trained, experienced employment candidates, and efforts to retain existing personnel have been unsuccessful. Exit interview data point to leadership issues, and poor working conditions.

Prison leadership is comprised of Warden Bob Jones, who started at Greenvale when it first opened; Sergeant Dave Lee, the senior-level correctional leader with over 15 years of experience; and Officer Stan Phillips, a correctional manager who joined the leadership team in 2015. All three leaders work collaboratively, but they tend to remain siloed away from the other employees. All of the prisons communications are top-down and authoritative; the leadership team believes this style is necessary given the work environment and inherent risks involved. While the team believes they are fostering a management-by-objectives culture, many employees feel excluded from the process and perceive more of an in-group/out-group mindset. Consequently, several recent attempts to implement new policies and procedures have met with resistance from the current employees.

    Section B)

    • The similarities and differences of making informed assessment in traditional (non-family owned) and family-owned businesses (FOBs)
    • Factors within family-owned businesses that are different from traditional businesses, and how these could impact the ODs ability to effectively assess and evaluate issues
    • The role of family systems theory in consulting for FOBs
