To begin this assessment:

• Take some time to reflect on all you have learned about the field and ways you can contribute to psychology, especially within your specialization.
• Primary audience: Because this is a personal vision statement for your future career, you are your primary audience.
• Secondary audience: Your vision should also be clear to other people (such as family, friends, and your faculty) so you can share it with them and receive support to achieve it.
• Review work you have done in previous assessments that you could revise and incorporate into this final assessment.
• You are encouraged to interview a psychology professional in the specialization that is your focus. You can use the results of this interview in your assessment.
• Review the template. You will need to use this template when completing your assessment.

Use information from the media activity to create an introduction to your paper that addresses the following:

• Explain your passion and interest in psychology and how these relate to your previous personal and professional experiences.
• Provide contextual information someone else would need to know to fully understand your vision.
  • This could include your previous personal and professional experiences related to your vision, any major influences that led you to psychology and your specialization, why your passions and interests in psychology are important to you, and any other relevant information to provide context for your vision.

Use information from your prior assessments (Assessments 1, 2, and 3) to guide you in addressing the content of the body of the paper. Make sure to revise the information from those assessments (rather than repeating verbatim) to create a logical flow in addressing the following:

   • Describe your future career vision as a psychology practitioner-scholar. Discuss personally meaningful and relevant educational, career, and life goals to achieve your vision.

   • Create and discuss a detailed action plan to achieve career goals that includes all the required elements including the start-to-end duration of the goal or milestone, the goal or milestone being addressed, and the skill and experience gains from this goal or milestone.
9. Conclusion:
   • Explain the benefits of becoming a practitioner-scholar in the field of psychology and explain the importance and relevance of your vision and goals to your personal and professional aspirations. Summarize the entire paper from the abstract to the action plan.

Before You Submit

Scenario

You are an intern at a mental health clinical. The clinical psychologist would like to create some handouts for patients to read while they sit in the waiting room. The clinic serves a wide variety of patients coming in to seek counseling services. The two handouts you are being asked to create are for human development and grief.

You will need to narrow down your topic to a specific observation and then create a hypothesis. Youll be asked to choose a design for your study and explain the reasoning behind your choice.

In this assignment, you will determine strategies to advocate for the counseling profession by developing a position statement. A position statement, like a white paper, is a report that presents both facts and opinions on a particular issue to inform readers and influence them. This assignment has two parts:

1. The first part will be a brief introductory paper entitled Advocating for the Counseling Profession.
   • In this section of the assignment, describe the need for professional counselors to advocate on behalf of the profession.

2. For the second part of the assignment, you will construct a Position Statement and Advocacy Recommendations paper.
   • Focus on an issue impacting the credentialing (certifications, licenses, accreditation and portability of licensure) of clinical mental health counselors.
   • Make a well-supported argument that counselors’ scope of practice should be augmented or expanded so that counselors and clients can be better served.
   • Include your Position Statement and Advocacy Recommendations as Appendix A at the end of your Advocating for the Counseling Profession paper. The template shows how to include an appendix in an APA-style paper.

Your Position Statement and Advocacy Recommendations paper should have the following sections:

• Topic and Background: Identify the topic and summarize what has been done in the past. Then succinctly describe the current state of affairs with respect to the issue.
• Arguable Viewpoints: Briefly state at least two points of view on your topic.
• Viewpoint: State the position you advocate.
• Supporting Reasons: State your reasons for supporting your chosen position.
• Call to Action and Advocacy Recommendations: Describe a process for counselors to follow in advocating on an issue that impacts their credentialing (licensure, certifications) and scope of practice. Include specific recommendations for action steps counselors can follow in advocating for the profession on this issue.
