Both the Wandjina paintings and The Scream hold a very eerie image that personally looks at the audience like they are looking at something that gives them agony or fear by the way the subjects hold their mouth open in shock, and their eyes widen. However, the Wandjina paintings look much older and are made with different materials with less vibrant colors. The Scream painting has vibrant colors, unlike the Wandjina. In The scream it has only one individual upfront looking at the audience, while in the Wandjina, there are multiple individuals looking at us and around as if aware of something else. The scream looks a little more direct to us than the Wandjina paintings that seem to be looking at all around, including us. I think the Scream is directly telling us their fear and anxiety in everyday life. The Wandjina feels like a ritualistic painting, perhaps about the afterlife; their faces seem fierce yet with fear and shock.

When I compared the Wandjina paintings with Edvard Munch’s The Scream, I saw that both have some similarities like the human-like figures that express emotions or meanings. Both figures in the paintings have exaggerated facial features and in the painting the use of yellow is used quite a bit in both. The paintings both feel intense and symbolistic. Despite these similarities theyre still both very different from each other, it seems to me that the meanings behind these paintings are different in context the Wandjina paintings are much older than Edvard Munchs The scream so their meanings could represent ancestor’s, spiritual beliefs, nature, or cultural beliefs, while the scream seems to represent strong emotions and feelings of fear, anxiety, and distress. The painting is also more vibrant with flowing patterns, colors, and brushstrokes. So overall the similarities in both paintings are messages, expressions, use of color and shapes, but the differences are the Wandjina painting message represent ancestral past and spirituality while Edvard Munchs The Scream, represents negative emotions while also being more colorful and vibrant.

  • Intersections of Social Institutions

This discussion addresses module outcomes 1 and 2. You have learned about the institutions of politics, education and religion. You have learned theories that examine how these institutions promote solidarity and stability in society even though they also contribute to inequality and dysfunction. Functionalists argue that the institutions interact and support each other in order to maintain social order. You will critically evaluate how these institutions interact and discuss whether this stability functions well or does harm to society.

    1. Pick one topic that has been covered in class thus far from the following options: racism, deviance, poverty.
    2. Apply one theory to a discussion of how this topic is supported in politics, education and religion.
    3. Do these institutions support social solidarity on this topic, or do they promote social dysfunction? Use evidence from the module readings and viewings to support your answer.

  • Parapharsing

In this team discussion, you will practice your paraphrasing skills. These skills, which are essential for students and writers, will help you to more easily incorporate information and evidence from sources into your writing.

Step 1: Identify a short passage from a source that you want to paraphrase. For example, you could select a passage from one of your textbooks, a passage from a source in the library, or even part of the module notes in this course. Your passage should be at least 3-4 sentences long but no longer than a few paragraphs.

Step 2: Read the passage slowly and carefully, answering the following questions in your own words. (Dont try to paraphrase the passage yet. At this point simply answer the questions below.)

    • What do you see as the most important idea of the passage as a whole? Try to write this in your own words using just 1-2 sentences.
    • What other ideas, information, or evidence did the passage use to support the main idea? Make a list.

Step 3: Put the passage away so that you are not looking at it. Now, using only your memory and your notes from Step 2, re-write the passage in your own words. Dont try to re-create the passage word-for-word. Instead, try to capture the same ideas using your own words.

Step 4: Look at your paraphrase side by side with the original passage. Make sure it doesnt match the original passage with only a few words changed. This may be unavoidable for a few key words or phrases, but it should not be true for the paraphrase as a whole. If it is too close to the original passage, return to Step 3 and try again.

Step 5: In your initial discussion post, submit your original passage, the notes you created in Step 2, and the final paraphrase you created in Step 3. Make sure to clearly label each part of your post (original passage, step 2, and step 3). In addition, write approximately 100 words describing what you learned from this process. Was the process helpful for you? If so, why? If not, why not?

It is imperative that you use the legend and the feedback she provided. However, she only checked the first page; the entire learning plan needs to be revised.
