Discussion Prompt: Symbolic Interactionism, the Self, and Ethnic Meaning (Chapter 5 + Two Videos)

After reading Chapter 5 of The Sociology of Ethnicity and watching the two videos on Symbolic Interaction and George Herbert Mead, write a discussion post that connects the reading to the videos.

In 300500 words, address the following:

    1) Explain symbolic interactionism in your own words (micro-level focus, symbols, meaning-making). Include one concept from Chapter 5 (e.g., collective definition of the situation, sense of group position, or the race relations cycle).

    2) Use one example of a symbol from the videos (engagement ring, tattoos, swastika, McDonalds, Miss Cecile/persona, objective vs. subjective reality). Explain how the meaning of that symbol changes across situations or over time, and connect it to Chapter 5.

    3) Apply Mead to identity: Explain how the self develops through interaction. Use generalized other (and/or ideal types) and briefly connect it to subjective vs. objective reality as described in the video.

    4) Connect to ethnicity: Using Chapter 5, explain how symbolic interactionism helps us understand ethnic identity or ethnic boundaries as constructed through shared meanings. Mention at least one influence (institutions, dominant-group perceptions, or power).

    Requirement:

    Citations/Use of materials

Refer to Chapter 5 + both videos (at least one reference to eachquote or specific paraphrase is fine).

    Cultural Heritage Assignment

First select someone to interview that is of a different culture…Note: I did not say of a

    different race. In other words

    ,

    you could be African

    American, then it would permissible

    to interview someone that i

    s Haitian.

If you practice the same religion as some one

from another country, such has Muslim, then you

    must

    select someone else.

    In the first

paragraph you will want to discuss the country that the person comes from. Where is

that country, approx. how many people, what is their chief crop or what

    they are

    famous

for. You will use the Internet to gather the data and cite references.

    You want to inquire

about their dietary habits, dating/marriage, religious customs, costumes /dress,

    holidays,

or any other information that you feel is pertinent.

    Cite References.

    The paper

must be in narrative form like you are telling a story, not a question answer format as if

    you were conducting an interview.

    Guidelines: The paper

    is to be narrative format,

    12 point

    font, Arial

    .

    Calibri

    is

    NOT

    acceptable

    Black Ink,

    5

    6

pages in length, double spaced. When going between

paragraphs on double space you do not

    double double

    the spaces.

    The cultural

heritage assignment is your next phase in learning about different cultures.

    C

    ite

    references

, you may add supporting data from the Internet that your interviewee

    provides. You need

    at least

    three (3) references

    , on a

    separate reference page

    , not

included in the total of your text.

When citing something that the author from the

    website states

    then you

put that information in quotation marks and note the reference.

On the reference page note Reference Page which is APA

    ,

    not Works cited, which is

    MLA.

, This means that your reference page will be titled

    “Reference Page”

    The title

    for the paper is culture

    j.smith.

(this is an example) USE your last name

    culture dash

    first letter period last name.

A good way to post correctly is to title your pap

    er this way

in your documents. This way when you put it in the Assignment Folder it will have this

title. I will have to download them from the assignment folder to my documents for

grading. This means you attach it not cut and paste.

This should help to make sure

    that you post it correctly.

By providing a correct title will prevent the assignment from

    getting lost in my documents

. For citing reference see the Course Document tab or

    www.perdue.owl.com

Grading: Everyone does not have excellent writing skills, do the best that you can. The

format is serious, that is spelling, grammar and font. The red squiggly lines means the

word is misspelled. The green/blue squiggly lines means incorrect grammar. Do Not

start sentences with a conjunction, and, but because

    , for

    , and yet. Some conjunctions

work, but check your grammar books or the Internet. Citing references is important,

there are resources for you on the Course Document and External Links, and the

    Re

ference page is in alphabetical order, see the resources.

    You will be graded on

opening paragraph, content of paper, grammar/spelling, a correct reference page. If

you do not know how to do a correct reference page consult the External Links and the

Internet or other books that you may have
