    1. Define both sides of the issue you are presenting (attempt to explain it from both perspectives).
    2. Discuss your own personal reflections on this issue and if that perspective shifted as a result of considering the sources.
    3. Consider your internal reactions to working with people in therapy settings who might hold viewpoints on this topic that widely differ from your own perspective.
    4. Identity some things you might do as a therapist (tools) to help guide you through some of the discomforts you may feel in working with extremist viewpoints that differ from your own.

Note: Make sure you integrate readings from this week into your discussion, you may also look outside the readings for this week to supplement your ideas.

  • Substantial Responses

responses must be substantial and have depth – they should go beyond just agreeing. Your responses should stimulate further discussion on the topic. You can do this by one of three ways:

    • Asking a question to your classmate to further explore the topic.
    • Adding a video with APA reference that further explores the topic or a related topic or showcases an alternative view.
    • Adding a quote or citation from a scholarly source (articles and books by American researchers not websites or blogs) along with adding the APA reference at the end of your post.
  • Sociology Question

    Overview

You have chosen one social problem to explore for your course assignments and have conceptualized that social problem within a systems framework, including the elements of the system that affectboth positively and negativelythe population that is impacted by the social problem.

You are moving toward developing an overall systems change strategy to address the social problem. To have a meaningful examination of the system and its impact, you must engage in scholarly exploration of the issues through the development of a literature review.

    Instructions

Address the six bullet points below that correspond to the rubric criteria for this assignment:

    • Describe the social problem of focus, including the specific outcomes that should be addressed in that system and the population it impacts.
      • Describe the problem succinctly in your introduction.
      • What do you hope to change about that social problem or system? What are some resulting outcomes that you hope to achieve?
      • For example, if your focus is the child welfare system, what are the specific outcomes that you are attempting to address about that system and the population it impacts?
    • Analyze the existing literature on the problem or issue of focus.
      • To analyze is to break something down into its parts and examine the parts carefully and in detail; the goal is to identify the essential elements and to learn what they do and how they relate to one another.
      • Search appropriate scholarly databases for current articles (published within the last eight years) that might clarify what we do know about it.
      • As you read, focus on the key questions and strive to make them more precise, more relevant to your interest, and more focused on the importance of these ideas to social work practice in the context of this particular system.
      • What has worked well and what needs reform?
      • What are the specific issues of diversity, oppression, and/or social justice?
    • Write content clearly and logically, following the rules of grammar, usage, and mechanics.
      • Grammar refers to the basic rules for how sentences are constructed and how words combine to make sentences (such as word order, case, and tense).
      • Usage refers to correct word choice and phrasing, particularly with regard to the meanings of words and phrases.
      • Mechanics refers to correct use of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
      • Write in the third person, adhering to conventions of academic tone.
    • Organizecontent so ideas flow logically with smooth transitions.
    • Support main points, assertions, arguments, conclusions, or recommendations with relevant and credible evidence.
    • Apply APA style and formatting to scholarly writing.
      • This includes the formatting of the title page, page numbers, margins, use of in-text headers, appropriate in-text citations, and references page.

Present the results of your literature review in a 57 page narrative essay, integrating at least 10 articles you have read, creating the basis of a change-based strategy that focuses on achieving change within your chosen system or social problem.

    Additional Requirements

Your assignment should also meet the following requirements:

    • Page length: 57 typed content pages plus a title page, abstract, and references.
    • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.
    • Sources: Six scholarly sources published within the last 7 years, cited and referenced in current APA style and format.

    Discussion Topic

Before responding in this forum, watch the following video on an experiment done by psychologist Phillip Zimbardo. Fair warning, it has some vulgar language and some moderately violent scenes.

Based on what you see in the video, which of the five ethical dimensions did he violate with his research? As a reminder, these include: confidentiality/privacy, avoid harm, consent, avoid deception, and coercion. You can pick more than one. Explain why you think he violated that dimension using examples from the video.

When responding to a classmate, I want you to suggest ways in which the experiment could have been improved to make it more ethical. It might not be possible to make it fully ethical, but it certainly could be better.

    Discussion Topic

Let’s say I want to study the reasons why students cheat on online exams. To do this, I visit the computer lab in the basement of the library every day during the week when most midterms are happening and again during finals week. I approach students at random to ask them a few open-ended questions (meaning they can answer however they like) about their attitude towards cheating. In addition to probably being really annoying, what standards of scientific knowledge does this study likely fail?

Your initial post should engage at least one of the scientific standards outlined in the lecture/book to describe what could go wrong with this study. When responding to a classmate, offer suggestions for how to change or adapt the study to try and fix those potential problems.

    1) For this assignment, I chose to focus on social isolation among older adults. Many people view loneliness and isolation among older adults as a private or personal issue, but when using the sociological imagination, it becomes clear that they are also broader social problems connected to community support, healthcare access, transportation, family systems, and social attitudes toward aging. I created a survey through Poll Everywhere and received responses from 13 participants.

Most respondents recognized that social isolation among older adults is a social issue rather than strictly a personal problem. Many participants also believed society does not do enough to support socially isolated older adults. In addition, respondents identified loss of family or friends, health problems, and lack of support systems as major causes of isolation. This shows that many participants understood that social isolation is influenced by larger social and structural factors rather than individual choices alone.

However, some responses also reflected elements of victim-blaming. For example, several participants agreed with the statement that older adults are primarily responsible for maintaining social connections. Others selected older adults themselves as having responsibility for addressing isolation. These responses suggest that some individuals still place responsibility primarily on older adults rather than considering barriers such as mobility issues, transportation, financial limitations, grief, disability, or lack of community resources.

At the same time, many participants believed communities, families, and society should play a greater role in reducing isolation. Responses supporting more community programs, healthcare support, and family involvement demonstrated that many participants also recognized the importance of social support systems. Overall, the survey showed that while many people recognize social isolation among older adults as a social issue, some victim-blaming attitudes persist.

  • Write a discussion

According to William Ryan’s 1976 book, Blaming the Victim, often times society will blame the victim for the social problem they are facing. For this option, select an option and survey at least 5 individuals. You can send this survey to more people, if you would like. Complete your survey by using the Poll Everywhere (website). For assistance getting started and creating a survey, please watch this video.

    Option 2 – Part 1: Poverty:

Locate at least 5 individuals who society would deem to be living at or close to middle or lower class. Keep in mind that many individuals live above their means so looks can be deceiving when considering the amount of debt families can accumulate.

After locating these individuals, survey them using the Poll Everywhere app.

Develop questions for your survey to ask about what life is like for them and potential questions to determine if they feel that society blames them for their current economic state. Be sure to include the question, “What do you wish individuals knew about poverty?”

    Create at least 5 questions.
