Read Innovation Lightbulb: Gender Gaps in the High-Tech Sector (excerpt below) and answer questions.

    Newsletter by Srishti Khemka

    Published April 21, 2023

The inaugural Innovation Lightbulb newsletter discusses the ongoing gender disparity in the high-tech industry. According to the U.S. Equal Opportunity Employment Commission, there are significantly less women in the high-tech industry across all levels from technicians to professionals to senior executives. Across a 6-year timespan from 2014 to 2020, these gaps have either decreased negligibly or, in the case of senior executives and managers, increased.

Diversity in the tech industry is critical for innovation. The number of women in the scientific and technical industry has been growing over time, but without more women, the industry is missing out on a valuable pool of talent that can bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. Not only is the high-tech industry missing out on an under-tapped talent pool, but greater inclusion has been associated with greater profit in knowledge-intensive industries. A 2020 Citigroup report estimated that including more women and Black Americans in the initial stages of innovation could increase U.S. GDP by as much as $640 billion. Furthermore, a Harvard Business Review study found that when firms integrated women into leadership roles, they were more likely to be more profitable and open to change.

Having more women not only in the high-tech industry but also in leadership positions can create a more inclusive and equitable workplace culture. Women in leadership can serve as role models and mentors for other women in the industry, helping to break down barriers and inspire the next generation of female tech leaders.

The gender disparity in the tech industry is a problem that needs to be addressed. By creating a more diverse and inclusive industry, we can foster innovation, improve financial performance, and inspire the next generation of female tech leaders in the United States.

  • Gentrification in New York City

For Part I (the diagnosis). First, read about your case and try to understand what the conflict is about, i.e. its history, grievances on both sides, perhaps third parties and their role in the conflict. Then, do a conflict assessment, meaning take the handout “The Seven Elements of Integrative Negotiation” and ask yourself the questions under each element about each party: 1. What are positions or the claims of party A and party B? 2. What are their interests (or the underlying reasons for their claims)? 3. What are their BATNA’s (that is their walk-away deals)? 4. What are their possible options (that is possible negotiated agreements or packages of solutions to the different issues they have?) …etc until you are done with all the 7 elements. (This part is done well in the sample I have attached). Then, ask yourself what are possible cultural barriers between party A and party B? (not much of a cultural barrier exist between Russia and Ukraine in the attached sample, since they have very close if not the same cultures; that’s why the cultural dimension is missing from the attached sample). As for the format, it’s a PowerPoint presentation of 10 to 15 minutes, with oral comments by all members of the team together,” i.e. all in the same presentation. The easiest way I know to record a presentation online is on Zoom. Once you have your recording, you can post it in Brightspace. How you take turns to comment the slides and how you divide the work and collaborate between you is all up to you. Note: Please, dont cut and paste long passages to overload the slides with texts that you would then read verbatim. You can safely assume that your audience knows how to read. What we want is slides with titles and bullet points that are explained and discussed orally, very much like a presentation in person. Party A is for gentrification and Party B is against it. Party C is neutral (the mediator). Chevell is Party A & Party C doing

  • Social theory

The final draft of the paper compares a theorist from the first half of the class with one from the second half. This means you need to go back, edit, and refine your writing from your midterm and add another 4ish pages showing how a theorist from the second half of the class would explain the same event. The final part of your paper should also have an analysis where you make a claim about who can explain the current event you are writing about better and why you think they can do so. In total, the final draft should be 8-10 pages.

    General Paper Guidelines

    1. Formatting: Papers must be in Calibri 11, Aptos 11, or Times New Roman 12 font, double spaced, and with standard margins. Any paper not submitted in this format will receive an automatic 0. You will have 24 hours from when I see the paper/give it its grade to fix it in order to receive credit.

    2. A formal academic writing style is expected. The degree to which this matters increases is raised with each draft.

    3. Full in-text citations and a reference sheet are expected with each draft. The reference sheet does not count toward the page limit.

    4. Anything past the page limit will not be read/not counted as submitted.

    5. Doing a paper like this requires synthesizing, analytic skills, and the ability to write with depth in a concise manner. This means finding where arguments and points overlap between different pieces and linking them together in the same paragraph, sometimes the same sentence. It also means learning to boil down articles to a few key points and arguments and learning how to line them all up in a logical order. This is the point of the paper’s design. To teach you to develop your own ideas and process a large amount of information, synthesize it, and present your own theory-based analysis in a clear and concise manner.

    6. Avoid the use of unanalyzed quotes.

    7. I am always happy to look over rough drafts. However you need to email me your draft beforehand and/or provide a hard copy in person. If you are unsure about something or want feedback before submission, please visit my office hours.

    8. To help you with both the assignments and the readings an additional reading and writing guide has been posted to Canvas.

Above all else: BE BOLD. What matters here is the work you put into thinking big and making connections between theory and the empirical world. It involves build reasoning skills above all else. What matters to me is that you are taking the effort to build the analysis and explanations you need. When it comes to theory there are some limits to this (ex: you can’t say that the class domination theory of power posits that all groups engage in political action and have equal chances for success) but we don’t all need identical readings. I will always favor creative and well thought out theorizing over a cautious coverage of what is going on and not thinking about how it connects to theory and/or everything and everyone else in the world.

Use the this for help: Academic expectations in families also contribute to academic burnout among community college students; hence, it is a highly relevant subject in the contemporary academic environment. Most students at community colleges, particularly first-generation students, are left pondering the expectations for better performance. Such pressure has been said to be fruitful in the intention. Nevertheless, they are bound to become stressed and anxious over time and, ultimately, burn out due to a lack of time to manage academic and family obligations. Burnout can manifest as emotional fatigue, disconnection, and poor school performance, all of which can be very difficult to cope with during the learning process.

This topic is necessary because community college students must balance multiple responsibilities, including employment, family, and education. Family pressure may also add to their distress and burn them out. This is important in my community, where learners from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds have a substantial impact on the learning environment. One approach to this problem is to develop a more supportive college environment that would help students reduce stress and improve their academic performance (Yu et al., 2021). This paper lays the foundation for family expectations and burnout, informing intervention and counseling approaches for students. Such efforts would eventually lead to a better, happier school life, resulting in success and joy later in life.

(Yu et al., 2021) explored the effects of family cohesion and adaptability on academic burnout among college students. The authors concluded that students whose families have a good emotional relationship and those who can adapt to stress show less burnout. More significantly, the literature found that peer support, positive psychological properties, resilience, and optimism mediated the interplay between family dynamics and burnout. The article explores the potential relevance of families and their effects on students, and offers practical suggestions to help families prevent burnout (Yu et al., 2021). Such findings imply that fostering a positive family atmosphere and student resilience can help mitigate the adverse effects of educational stress.

    1. Discuss Lyng’s concept of edgework (pp. 220-226), broken down into the following parts: edgework activities; edgework skills; edgework sensations.

    2. What do you think is the most important contribution of edgework as a model of voluntary risk-taking?

    3. Rajah expands the concept of edgework as risk-taking into the area of resistance to violence and control in the intimate relationship. Evaluate the success of this theoretical expansion regarding risk thresholds and the rewards of resistance as well as examples of edgework resistance (pp. 234-240).

    4. According to Brent the activity of parkour (i.e., free-running) is at once an emerging popular culture component and also a deviant label. Critique the apparent conflict of this emerging activity through the related concepts of resistance and edgework. Do you think parkour will become more or less popular in the near future?
