  • Religiosity and secularization in a country using World Valu…

vidence Evaluation Artifact Paper – Similar to the data in the Kasselstrand et al. book, each student is going to pick one country for which there are data in the World Values Survey (WVS – ) in at least two waves. Your assignment in this paper is to examine three of the religiosity questions in the WVS over time (at least two waves, more are fine). The WVS includes questions about religious affiliation, belief in a god, importance of religion, and other religious beliefs. This assignment doesnt actually require statistical analysis skills beyond being able to understand percentages, read tables and charts, and create a table or chart. Your paper should be written for an intended audience of people with a level of education similar to your own but with no knowledge of the content of this class. What you will turn in: An essay with an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. The essay must be at least 1,500 words. The essay must include at least 5 peer-reviewed articles published in the last 20 years that are related to the topic of your paper (e.g., the country of interest or the variable of interest); the articles must be properly formatted using either ASA style. (NOTE: Articles published in the journal Religions are not acceptable. It is a predatory journal. You are strongly encouraged to focus on articles published in Sociology of Religion, Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Social Compass, Secularism and Nonreligion, or Review of Religious Research. You can also use journals published by the American Sociological Association. If you arent sure about your articles, ask your instructor.) Your essay should also include a citation to the Kasselstrand et al. (2023) book. Your essay MUST also define secularization. Your paper should also include a chart (bar or line graph) or table showing the relevant statistics over time. Finally, and most importantly, you need to determine whether religiosity in your country of interest has decreased, increased, or stayed the same and explain your findings in light of the topics we have discussed in class. Basically, you need to answer whether what has happened in the country you are examining aligns with secularization theory or not. Regarding peer-reviewed articles… Before undertaking a research project, you should always see what prior research has already been undertaken on that topic. You will use one of the electronic databases (e.g., JSTOR, Academic Search Ultimate, SocIndex, etc.) to find peer-reviewed, scientific articles that relate to your topic of interest. The articles need to be recent (within the last 20 years) and relevant (if you cannot figure out how to discuss them in your paper, they are not relevant). Your Bibliography should be in ASA format, like this: Cragun, Ryan T., and Michael Nielsen. 2009. Fighting Over “Mormon”: Media Coverage of the FLDS and LDS. Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought. Just to make this clear, including the articles in your essay does not mean that you summarize each article. If you submit as part of your paper 5 summaries of articles, youre going to get a very poor grade on this part. SYNTHESIZE the articles rather than providing a mere summary. Every one of the articles you read will include an example of a synthesis. In the paper, you should reference the articles you read when you draw upon them (called in-line citations). You MUST discuss every article you include in your bibliography at the end of the paper. However, no direct quotes are allowed! If you end up thinking an article you originally picked is irrelevant, then find a new one. A great way to find new articles is to look through the citations in other relevant articles or to do a cited reference search. A grading rubric for this assignment will be posted on Canvas. Submit your assignment on Canvas before the due date. This assignment addresses learning outcomes 1 and 4.

  • Field Assignment #1

This is a Intro to Sociology Class. There should be no plagiarism or ill will receive a 0 in the class. See instructions below.

Conduct a brief participant observation study wherein you study and/or participate in a

particular group event or social organization. Samples of events could include an Indian

powwow, visit a religious group other than the one you usually attend, hang out at a greasy spoon

caf or coffee shop, attend a sporting event, or any volunteer organization. You are NOT limited

to those choices. Make sure you have permission to be there. To complete the assignment simply

describe an event in detail, write down your observations, note any patterns you observe, or point

out any observations or patterns that particularly surprise you. Include a personal reflection on

how the experience changed your perspective or understanding of the group.

  • M6.4 Learning Reflection

    Reflect:

It is time to think about what you have learned in this module and reflect on how it fits with your professional experiences and prior knowledge. In this Evolve activity, you will simply assess how what you have learned this week compares to what you knew previously and how it might benefit you in your academic and career aspirations. Please answer the following:

    • What do you think are the key issues in the family and economy that are shaping life in the United States?
    • What do you think we should prepare for in the coming years to create or ensure greater stability for more people?
  • The Household and the Economy

This discussion addresses module outcomes 1 and 2. In this module, you learned about the different types of families and our economic systems. You learned about the changing of the family to include many types of family structures beyond the traditional nuclear family. You learned theories that explain the major role that family plays in the structure of society. You also learned about the troubles that families face today. In this discussion, you will analyze the family and the economy, linking the macro- and micro-sociological levels of analysis to show the way institutions shape social life.

Before beginning this activity, be sure to read the Module Notes and the assigned readings and viewings. Use as much detail from the readings and other learning materials in the module as possible to answer the following questions.

    1. What are some of the changes in the U.S. family structure that are most notable to you?
    2. How might the economy have contributed to these changes?
    3. Pick one of the theories that you learned in this module and apply it to your understanding of the relationship between the family and the economy.

  • Lecture responses

Choose two different points made in the lecture (your choice; there is no formal prompt to answer). Your writing style should be informal here – think about responding to points raised in class, for example, rather than writing a formal essay. You do need to include specific points and examples from the lecture and meet the length requirement of roughly 500 words (that is about two pages long, double-spaced) in order to earn full points. If the lecture presents statistical data (most do) you must reference at least one of those statistics in your response.
  • Final exam

Directions Write a 750 word reflection essay (3-4 pages long, double-spaced) in response to the questions below. You must follow these directions and meet the length guidelines indicated to earn full points. Please consult the OpenStax Introduction of Sociology textbook and its chapter on social movements (Chapter 21), linked in the Module for this week. As always, any essays submitted containing plagiarism will receive ZERO points and you will not be able to make up this assignment. Avoid plagiarism very simply by putting everything in your own words and writing in your own original voice. Do not quote the textbook(s). NUMBER EACH QUESTION IN YOUR RESPONSE – points will be deducted for each question that is not numbered. Likewise, follow the instructions below to earn full credit. If you do not include actual statistics in your response to question 3, half of the points for that question will be deducted from your score. Questions 1) Explain the different types of social movements (reform, resistance, etc) and what you see to be the most important distinctions between them. Then identify which kind of social movement Black Lives Matter is. Explain how you see BLM in relation to the civil rights movement using this typology – are they the same kind of movement? The same movement? Or different in what key ways? Your response must be written in 2 paragraphs, at least one 1 full page long double-spaced. Worth 2 points. 2) Conduct a frame analysis of a slogan (always a good example of framing) from a social movement you know about that addresses inequality/injustice in terms of class, race or gender. You can always look on Google Images for protest signs from demonstrations associated with any given social movement; include an image or two in your response if you want. Is that slogan an example of diagnostic, prognostic or motivational framing? Or is it more than one at the same time? Be sure to explain the connection between diagnostic and prognostic framing in your response. Your response must be written in 3 paragraphs and be 1-1.5 pages long. Worth 3 points. 3) Discuss how the social movement you selected in Q2 responds to the social inequality we learned about in the last few weeks of our course (related to class, race or gender). Here you must include 3-4 ACTUAL STATISTICS from the assigned textbook reading by Khan in Weeks 3, 4 or 5. Remember, statistics do NOT speak for themselves; we must interpret what the research findings mean and theorize what mechanisms in our society produce the empirical patterns we see across data. So first present the statistics; then in a second paragraph explain what social forces or dynamics produce the patterns you see in the data; in your third paragraph, explain how the selected social movement proposes to solve/improve the dynamics that produce the inequality. Your response must be written in 3 paragraphs and be 1-1.5 pages long. Worth 3 points. LOL
  • SOC 351 Response Paper

Topic: The Changing Nature of Marriage and Family Life in the U.S.

Families are one of the most important social institutions, but they are not static. Marriage and family life in the United States have shifted dramatically across history and continue to vary by class, race, ethnicity, and cultural background. Understanding these changes helps us see how family life is shaped by larger social, economic, and cultural forces.

This first response paper is designed to give you an opportunity to reflect on how families have changed over time, how they vary today, and how your own family or community experiences connect to these broader themes.

    Assignment Instructions

Write a 23-page paper (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, New Times Roman or Calibri 12-point font) responding to the prompts below. Be sure to use APA in-text citations and include a reference page at the end. No cover page or abstract is needed.

Questions to Address in Your Paper

Discuss how marriage and family life in the United States has changed over time and how it varies today.

    • What are the historical shifts in family roles, marriage practices, or childrearing.
    • How contemporary families differ by factors such as class, race/ethnicity, or household composition.
    • How social class influences parenting and expectations for children.
    • Connections to your own family, community, or observations of society today.
    • Personal/Family Connection Share how themes like cohabitation, single-parent households, divorce, remarriage, or parenting styles appear in your own family or extended family. Example: My parents delayed marriage until after finishing college, which reflects the trend of later marriage.
    • Community Connection Discuss what you notice in your neighborhood, faith community, school, or workplace. Example: In my community, many families rely on extended kin for child care, which reflects the concept of fictive kin ties.
    • Societal Observation Reflect on broader trends youve noticed in society, media, or popular culture. Example: Television shows often portray blended families and cohabiting couples, which mirrors the increase in these family forms in the U.S.
    • You are not required to share anything private or uncomfortable. The goal is to link abstract concepts to lived experience, showing how sociology connects to everyday life.
    • Your paper should include supported reasons and examples in paragraph format.

    Assignment Format

    • Cite sources properly in APA format (see APA resource:
    • ).
    • Include a reference page at the end.
