  • MENTAL HEALTH AUTOBIOGRAPHY

This assignment asks you to write in autobiographical form, meaning you will write in first person and share your own experiences and reflections. You will think about how social forces, not just personal weakness, shape the way people understand mental health. Using a sociological point of view, you will explain how your background and life experiences have influenced your beliefs about emotional struggles, mental illness, and asking for help.

For this paper, please write about the experience of being a hyper-independent woman and how that can affect mental health. You may connect this topic to different social factors such as family beliefs about emotions, cultural or community expectations, race or ethnicity, social class, gender roles, religion, immigration experiences, or how schools respond to mental health.

    Suggested Reflection Questions

(Use these as guides, not a checklist)

How was mental health talked about (or not talked about) in your family or community?

What messages did you receive about expressing emotions, stress, or vulnerability?

How were people expected to cope with emotional distress?

When someone struggled, what explanations were used (e.g., personal weakness, moral

    failure, medical issue, social stress)?

What attitudes existed toward therapy, medication, or professional help?

How did social identities (race, gender, class, religion, etc.) shape these views?

**This is a high school assignment, so please use clear and simple vocabulary that is appropriate for a high school level**

  • GENDER AND Sl

Looking at the topic of gender, we have seen how people’s views of gender, gender norms, gender expectations, and etcetera vary. Although each sociological perspective has interesting things to say about the topic, Symbolic Interactionism (SI) offers a particular strength in how gender is defined and responded to by us.

    For this DB:

    • Make a post about how SI explains our understanding of gender and what gender means for us.
    • Look at the major institutions/topics covered in the chapter (that are not included in the lecture) and discuss how our understanding of gender is shaped by that topic (e.g. mass media, family, etc.)
    • Offer an example of how that topic/institution has tried to reshape the views of gender/gender expectations. Is it effective?
    • Offer an example about what else could be done to reshape gender norms/expectations through that topic.

Remember that we are studying sociological views on gender. Be respectful and kind, and professional!

Your response should reflect a clear understanding of the theory and the topic/institution’s influence over defining gender.

    3. Write a short (3-5 page – double-spaced, so around 750-1000 words) analysis of the story your photos/video tell about your food justice topic.

In the analysis, please do each of these things:

Clearly state your topic, briefly noting why you chose it or why it was interesting to you.

Select 34 key images or scenes and analyze how they connect to and/or what they can teach about your topic.

Clearly include at least 3 course concepts/theories/ideas in your overall analysis (not three per image/scene).

Briefly summarize what your visual elements overall and your analysis reveal about your food justice topic.

Briefly discuss what you would do if you were going to conduct further sociological research on this topic, noting at least one sociological research method you might use.

If/when including direct quotes from our course materials, please include a citation in your preferred style. (Author and page number is fine, and you don’t need to include a References section/page if you’re only referencing content from our course.)

So what you’ll submit in Canvas for this project is:

a file that contains your photos (with a brief caption for each) or video (with captions, voiceover, or a descriptive companion document)

    a 3-5 page written analysis

  • Discussion 5

Read the article posted on Canvas, entitled “Cultural Aspects of Health and Illness Behavior.”

The authors introduce the concepts of gemeinschaft (community-focused) and gesellschaft (individual/society-focused) value orientations. Considering a modern, urban hospital that typically operates on a gesellschaft model (emphasizing efficiency, technical skill, and individual patient autonomy), how might conflicts arise when caring for a patient from a strong gemeinschaft culture? Discuss specific areas where misunderstandings could occur, such as decision-making, family involvement, and the patient-physician relationship.

    Discussion 2: Environmental Criminology

Spring 2026 Criminology Theory (CRIM-399-OL-25410)Discussion 2: Environmental Criminology

    Discussion Topic

For this discussion I would like you to reflect on what we have read about and discussed so far in the course. Consider the concept of Concentrated Disadvantage that we have discussed in class. Think about the factors that are said to contribute to concentrated Disadvantage: poverty, lack of education, lack of legal employment opportunities, high residential mobility, and physical dilapidation, for example. Think about how these factors may be related to crime and how we can work to address them. How might we combat some of these issues and how might such efforts reduce crime in these areas according to Social Disorganization, Routine Activities, and Broken Windows? I would like you to come up with potential solutions to some of these issues and connect them with the environmental theory we have discussed.

Please post a discussion of these questions that is at least 250 words. Standard writing conventions apply. Please cite any sources you use with APA 7th edition citations. Once you have posted your discussion, please respond to two of your classmates posts. Please note that responses like I agree or good point are not valid responses. Please relate all discussions and responses to class content and cite any material from outside of the course. You may disagree with the ideas proposed by your peers, but you must do so in a civil manner. Do not repeat the posts of other students. Please email me with any questions or see me in class.
