  • How can groups change the world

Groups make up the fabric of society. Each one of us is a part of many large and small groups that provide us with a sense of identity and connection. Seth Godin argues that these groups or tribes will change the world in the age of the internet because it is so easy for us to connect to others, make a tribe, and lead a movement. Consider how this idea of finding your tribe might influence you as you continue to develop your identity.

    Step 1: Watch the TedTalk

Watch Seth Godins TedTalk from 6:50 to 14:18.

    Step 2: Answer QuestionsQuestion 1

Describe models of primary groups, secondary groups, formal groups, informal groups, and reference groups. What are some examples of tribes from the TedTalk that provide models of these types of groups?

    Question 2

Describe e-communities. How does Godin describe the impact of e-communities on finding your tribe?

    Question 3

How would a sociologist analyze tribes (groups) in terms of status? Are tribes in-groups or out-groups?

    Question 4

How does Godin analyze tribes or groups in terms of values and mores? In other words, how do tribes come together based on their values and mores?

    Question 5

How does Godin analyze tribes or groups in terms of membership roles? In other words, how do tribes come together based on leadership and membership?

    Question 6

Analyze tribes or groups in terms of role conflicts and methods of resolution. In other words, how might people in tribes experience role conflict? How do you think tribes come to resolutions when facing disagreements?

  • Mass Media

In the digital age, mass media dramatically shapes society. From a young age, many American children have access to pop culture and other trends through social media. But even before social media and the internet, mass media impacted American society, influencing social trends and schools of thought. Changes in mass media throughout the decades are worth studying as many of them have had lasting effects on society.

Step 1: Research the History of Mass Media

Research the major developments in the history of mass media in the United States. In your research, identify the different periods where print media, electronic media, and digital media reigned supreme. In your research, find out how each form of media came about and identify two major societal impacts these forms of media had during the time they had the most influence.

    Step 2: Create a Timeline

Create a timeline of your research. Your timeline should include:

    • The date each type of media was developed (print, electronic, digital)
    • The dates that each media development was most popular in the United States
    • Six major social impacts of these forms of media on American society

You may make your timeline in word processing software, using graphic design software, on a poster, or using another method of your choice.

Step 3: Analyze Your Research from a Sociological Perspective

Analyze the developments in mass media you identified from a sociological perspective. Answer each of the following questions in one or two sentences using word processing software. You may need to do further research to answer the questions.

    1. Explain the differences between the functionalist and conflict perspectives on the developments in mass media in the United States.
    2. Examine how contemporary mass media issuesbias, false information, privacy, and/or inequalityare made more prominent by digital media versus other forms of mass media.
  • Types of societies

    Question 1

Identify and describe the five different types of societies that exist in the world today. Explain the evolution of one society from another to differentiate the types of societies. In other words, how do societies evolve from one type to the next?

    Question 2

Define these four different types of government: monarchy, democracy, authoritarianism, and totalitarianism. Differentiate between the level of freedom and level of citizen participation among these different types of government. Discuss the impact of each government on its citizens. Trace the participation of different citizen groups through time. How has a lack of freedom impacted citizens living under different governments in the past and present?

    Question 3

Explain the ways that the functionalist, conflict, and social interactionist theories within sociology might view education. Provide a real-life example that supports each theory.

    Question 4

Define the economic models of socialism and free enterprise. Differentiate between these two models and how they impact society. How are societies that use the two economic models different?

    Question 5

Based on the trends in data on American families from 1970 to 2000, a sociologist states that they anticipate a 15 percent decrease in nuclear families by 2030. Given the decrease in nuclear families depicted on the graph, do you think the sociologist is correct? Why or why not? Use this sociologists mathematical reasoning to analyze the trends in American society regarding family life, estimating the increase in singles and other family structures by 2030. (File attached)
