The impact of anonymous social media (specifically Fizz) on…
Each student will need to find a minimum of 4 scholarly sources about your topic, preferably from sociology, anthropology, or criminology journals or academic books. You will use these sources to write an annotated bibliography that summarizes the research problem, theoretical approach, methodology, and key findings of each source. The goal is to provide enough information that you do not need to re-read the article to use it as a source. These bibliographies will be used to construct your literature review. I recommend each student take a specific set of search terms or a specific area of literature relevant to your project. What is an acceptable scholarly source in this class? (Topic is: The impact of anonymous social media (specifically Fizz) on college student communication, behavior, and campus culture) 1. Peer-reviewed journals and books sources written and reviewed by experts in the fields of sociology, anthropology, or other social sciences. If it is not clear whether the source is peer-reviewed, check with me. 2. Certain federal and private research organizations may publish relevant research. 3. Most of your sources should be empirical studies (data is collected), and some should be qualitative research specifically. Theoretical sources (summarize and push theoretical debates) and review articles (summarize and analyze all major research on a topic) are acceptable, but should not be the only sources used. What is not an acceptable scholarly source? 1. Wikipedia, dictionary and encyclopedia websites, newspaper articles, and most other online sources (for the love of god, no A.I.). These may link to acceptable sources. 2. Textbooks, though these are great sources to point you toward acceptable sources. 3. Certain behavioral science sources (psychology, economics, family & consumer science, etc.) may be acceptable, but many are not appropriate. Check with me. Building your Annotated bibliography 1. Using your research proposal and concept map, identify the topics, key phrases, concepts, and other searchable terms that you will need to research. Divide up responsibilities among your group members to focus on specific important areas. 2. Provide a full reference for each source using ASA style. I will provided a guide for ASA style on Blackboard. 3. Underneath each separate reference, you will write a 1-3 paragraph annotation of the source (separate pages for each source recommended). Again, the goal is to provide the group member writing the literature review with enough detail that they do not need to read every source themselves. It may be best to use separate pages for each annotation. Your annotation should identify the following for EACH source: a. Summarize the overall argument of the source. b. Identify key concepts/theories that are used to help explain the research. c. Describe the research design, including: (1). A description of the sample or case study chosen; (2) the specific research techniques; (3) other relevant details. d. The major findings and conclusions of the research. e. Identify key quotes and include in-text citations with page numbers. f. How your project will use, build upon, or critique this research.

Why Am I Like This
What am I like this?
Objective:
You will critically examine the processes of socialization that have influenced your
development and identity. You will reflect on the agents of socialization (family, peers,
education, media, etc.) and analyze how these influences have shaped your beliefs,
behaviors, and sense of self.
Assignment Guidelines:
1. Introduction:
o Begin with a brief overview of socialization, defining the concept and its
importance in shaping individuals.
o State the purpose of the paper: to analyze the factors and experiences that
have contributed to your personal identity and explain why you are the
way you are.
2. Body:
o A. Agents of Socialization:
Family: Reflect on the role your family has played in your
socialization. Consider values, traditions, parenting styles, and
familial expectations. How have these shaped your personality,
beliefs, and behaviors?
Peers: Discuss how your friendships and peer groups have
influenced you. Think about peer pressure, group norms, and the
social dynamics within your friendships. How have these
relationships affected your identity?
Education: Analyze the impact of your educational experiences,
including the influence of teachers, the school environment, and
academic expectations. How has education shaped your worldview,
aspirations, and sense of self?

etc.) in your socialization. How has media exposure influenced your
perceptions, interests, and attitudes?
Other Influences: Include any other significant agents of
socialization that have impacted you, such as religion, work, or
community involvement.
o B. Critical Analysis:
Identify specific experiences or events that were particularly
formative in your socialization. How did these experiences reinforce
or challenge the norms and values you were exposed to?
Discuss any conflicts or contradictions in your socialization. For
example, how have you navigated conflicting values between
different agents of socialization (e.g., family vs. peers)? Reflect on the concept of “resocialization.” Have there been
instances where you had to adapt to new norms or values that
differed from those you were originally socialized into?
3. Conclusion:
o Summarize the key points discussed in the paper.
o Reflect on how your socialization continues to influence your current
identity and behavior. Consider how ongoing socialization may shape your
future self.
o Conclude with a personal statement on the significance of understanding
socialization in the context of personal development and identity
formation.

You will also conduct a general Google search (or another search engine) to find recent research reports from reputable research institutes about your topic.
Examples of reputable institutes include:
- Brookings Institution
- Pew Research Center
- Urban Institute
- Cato Institute
If you are unsure whether a source is reputable, email me before using it.
Next
- Brainstorm effective Google search terms
- Identify reputable research institutes related to your topic
- Summarize what kind of information a report provides
You may not copy and paste AI-generated annotations or summaries into your assignment.
Identify six research reports from reputable research institutes. List the titles below. You will write annotations next.
3. Create an annotated bibliography
Create Your Annotated Bibliography five (5) sources total (journal articles and/or research reports). I have provided links to help you create annotated bibliographic entries. Go back and view them. Each entry starts with a full APA citation. Then you will create an annotation that helps you quickly recall what the article or report is about by considering the questions below. The annotation you write should be about 100 words each. Do not use AI to write your annotations. You write them for you. I will go back through these, even though you will receive an instant grade based on word count. I can change the grade if I look at it and think it is too surface-level. Engage with the topic you have chosen by exploring the importance of the articles you choose.
- Use APA citation style
- Write in complete sentences
- Your annotations are for youto help you understand the research and think sociologically about your issue
Each annotation should address:
- What aspect of the issue does the article or report examines
- Whether it focuses on scope, lived experience, policy, or programs
- How the source is useful for writing an op-ed, bog, or educating others
- The main conclusions or recommendations of the research
- Important facts or figures you might use later
- Whether you agree with the authors suggested next steps, and why or why not

Holocaust
Essay Assignment: The Sociology of the Holocaust Instructions Choose one of the following essay questions and write a response between 800 and 1,200 words. Your answer must clearly engage with the assigned readings, particularly Fred Katzs A Sociological Perspective of the Holocaust. You should paraphrase key arguments rather than quote them directly, unpacking their significance in your own words. Your analysis should also incorporate the definitions of violence discussed in class (direct, communal, and structural violence) where relevant. While you are not required to reference Weber, you may include his theories if they strengthen your argument. Be sure to follow the formatting and citation guidelines outlined in the syllabus. Choose ONE of the following questions: The Role of Narratives in Structuring Violence Fred Katz argues that Nazi Germany successfully mobilized broad segments of society by constructing multi-layered narratives that framed Jews as a threat on economic, cultural, racial, and political fronts. These narratives justified escalating persecution, eventually leading to genocide. In your essay, analyze how the construction and dissemination of narratives contributed to the normalization and acceptance of violence in Nazi Germany. Drawing on Katzs argument, explain how narratives functioned as a mechanism for mass participation in violence. How did Nazi propaganda target different audiences and adapt its messages to appeal to various social groups? How did fear and moral disengagement play a role in shaping public compliance with persecution? How do the ideas of direct violence, communal violence, and structural violence help us understand the relationship between narrative and violence? Your response should engage directly with Katzs work, paraphrasing key arguments and unpacking their significance in your own words. Incremental Violence and the Expansion of Moral Boundaries Katz highlights the stepwise progression of Nazi policies, demonstrating how each stage of violencebeginning with social exclusion and ending in mass murderwas justified as a logical extension of the previous step. This incremental expansion of violence gradually reshaped public perception, making actions that once seemed unthinkable appear necessary. In your essay, examine how the concept of incremental violence helps explain the Holocaust as a process rather than a singular event. How did the Nazis gradually expand moral boundaries to justify increasing levels of violence? How did bureaucracy, role adaptation, and routine decision-making contribute to the escalation of violence? How do different definitions of violence (direct, communal, structural) help us understand the Holocausts progression? Your response should engage directly with Katzs work, paraphrasing key arguments and unpacking their significance in your own words. -
