What kind of volunteer opportunities appeal to you the most? Why? What role do volunteers play in our society? Frame your response using at least one of the three major theoretical perspectives. It is fine to incorporate additional perspectives if you want to. You will need to define and cite the theoretical perspective. It is fine to use the textbook for this. The best responses will involve outside research, with citations and references.

Three Perspectives: structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism

    Here is a student example

Volunteer opportunities that appeal to me the most are those focused on healthcare access and community emergency response, such as free clinics, blood drives, disaster relief, or programs that support underserved populations. These opportunities are meaningful to me because they allow volunteers to directly address urgent needshealth, safety, and well-beingwhile also reducing gaps in care for vulnerable groups. Volunteering in these settings feels impactful because the results are immediate and tangible, whether that is providing medical assistance, emotional support, or essential resources.

From a functionalist perspective, volunteering plays a critical role in maintaining social stability and cohesion. Functionalism views society as a complex system made up of interdependent parts that work together to promote stability and order (Kendall, 2018). Within this framework, volunteers serve an important social function by filling gaps that formal institutions cannot always meet. For example, while healthcare systems and government agencies are essential, they often lack the resources to address every individual need. Volunteers help supplement these systems by providing services, time, and support, thereby strengthening the overall functioning of society.

Volunteers also contribute to social integration, another key concept in functionalism. By participating in volunteer work, individuals develop shared values such as altruism, civic responsibility, and cooperation. These shared values help reinforce social norms and encourage collective responsibility for community well-being. Research supports this idea, showing that volunteerism increases social trust and community connectedness, both of which are essential for a stable society (Putnam, 2000).

In addition, volunteering benefits not only society but also the individual. Functionalists argue that social roles exist because they serve a purpose, and the role of the volunteer provides individuals with a sense of purpose and belonging. Studies indicate that volunteers often experience improved mental health, stronger social networks, and greater life satisfaction, which further contributes to social stability (Thoits & Hewitt, 2001).

Overall, from a functionalist viewpoint, volunteers are essential to society because they support institutions, promote shared values, and help maintain social order. Volunteerism strengthens communities by ensuring that social needs are met while also fostering cooperation and solidarity among individuals.

  • Migration and Immigration Discussion prompt

Public opinion poles show that many Americans associate immigration with crime and job competition, yet sociological research presented in the chapter finds that immigrants tend to have lower crime rates and do not generally reduce job opportunities for US born workers.

Why do you think public perceptions about immigration persist even when research evidence contradict them?

How do social institutions discuss in the chapter such as a media, government, or the criminal justice system shaped public beliefs about immigration, even when those beliefs conflict with research findings?

ChoiceDF1: Rational Choice It’s time to discuss Mikey Dowd and the officers of the 75th! Please discuss the following using R&B and the Rational Choice theories powerpoint as your guide: Where do we see Officer Dowd and the others of the 75th Precinct engage in the process of weighing the costs and benefits of their crimes? Provide examples for your response with timestamps from the documentary. Studies on rational choice show that while official/formal sanctions tend to have some effect on individuals decisions to commit crime, they almost always are relatively unimportant compared with extralegal/informal factors. What were some of the important extralegal and informal factors for Dowd/Chickie and the other officers featured in the documentary? The influence of peers has a profound impact on individual perceptions of the pros and cons of offending. What were the important peer influences for the officers of the 75th Precinct? The most important finding of rational choice research was of the expected benefits–Particularly the pleasure gained from offending, as one of the most significant influences in decisions to commit crimes. Using this perspective, can we see evidence of pleasure gained from offending from any of the officers of the 75th Precinct? Lastly, what do you think of the explanatory power of Rational Choice theory to help us understand why Mike Dowd and the others chose to turn away from their roles as upstanding, law abiding members of society and instead engage in these crimes?
