Marx argued that class conflict was a constituent element of modern life in Western societies. He claimed that capitalism was inherently unfair as the bourgeoise used their economic and political power to shape laws and institutions in a way that kept them in near total control of society, at the expense of the proletariat. This would continue, he argued, unless the proletariat developed class consciousness and decided to ban together to change the social, economic, and political landscape through collective action.
Given what you read in Chapter 5 of the course textbook about how concentrated wealth is in the hands of such a small proportion of Americans, how do you view contemporary U.S. society through the lens of class conflict? Do you believe that the system is tilted in favor of the ultra-wealthy as Marx claimed? Do you believe that poor and working-class Americans will at some point put aside cultural and political differences in favor of a unified class consciousness? What would your solution be to remediate the problem of wealth inequality in the U.S.?
Chapter 9 of the course textbook revealed that there are marked differences in breastfeeding practices and cessation based upon social class.
Were you surprised to learn that class can impact even intimate family practices such as these? What sorts of obstacles can you imagine working-class women facing that would impact their ability to continue breastfeeding their children? How is that related to socio-economic status and the types of work in which women may be engaged? Do you believe public policies can be shaped in a way that addresses obstacles to breastfeeding and leads to healthier outcomes for working-class children just starting out their lives?
Chapter 4 of the course textbook discusses HB2281 in Arizona (2010), which banned the teaching of ethnic studies and became the subject of many student-led protests. While eventually overturned, it remains an important case as public debates regarding the teaching of racial, ethnic, and gender studies continue. More recently, those debates have shifted to whether matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) should be part of public school (or university) curriculum.
Using the perspective offered by the case of HB2281, assess the contemporary debate over DEI curricula in schools. What is it that those arguing against DEI in education claim is the cause for concern? And what do those who advocate for the value of DEI in education have to say in response? Are there parallels that you can see between the HB2281 case and the current debate over DEI in schools?
(In order to answer this, it would be helpful to review the Chapter 4 discussion of HB2281 as well as find your own resources regarding that case and the contemporary discussion of DEI.)
