  • Project 2: Institutions Analysis (PowerPoint)

    Overview

As a reminder, for this project, you will need to identify an institution (family, economy, criminal justice system, military, travel, transportation, medical, housing, insurance, education, religion, etc.) and provide a Symbolic Interactionist and a Conflict Theory analysis of your institution in American society. Separate your symbolic interactionist and conflict slides. Use much detail regarding your symbolic interaction and conflict perspectives.

    Assignment Requirements (Review)

You will need to conduct research on your specific institution, using a combination of 7-10 resources (e.g., books, newspaper articles, news magazine articles, sociological journals, internet sites {limit 3}, videos, DVDs, interviews, etc.). For each slide — provide in-text citations, and include a work cited page as a final slide.

After you have conducted your research, you will analyze your information using the following questions as a guide:

    1. Discuss the history of your institution. How did it emerge? How did it come into existence?
    2. How do members of society perceive your institution?
    3. How do members of the institution perceive itself (its own institution)?
    4. How has the institution changed over time?
    5. What has caused various institutions to change?
    6. Discuss any stable features of the institution, that is, features that have not changed.
    7. As a way to better accommodate members of society, how would you improve your institution?
    8. Who are the major participants in the institution? What are their roles and statuses?
    9. Does your institution work better for some members of society (as opposed to others)?

    —————————

    10) Symbolic Interactionist perspective?

    11) Conflict perspective?

    12) Conclusion: What did you learn? How will you advance your knowledge?

    13) Work cited page.

Provide a separate slide for each question.

You will then organize and submit your information in outline format on a PowerPoint (1116 slides). Your slide presentation should include images, videos, charts, and graphs where applicable. Finally, be sure to include a conclusion and work cited page.

    Directions

    1. Create and upload your final PowerPoint/slide presentation. Include a Works Cited page at the end of your presentation for your citations or references. Chapter 1 of Introduction to Sociology serves as an orientation to sociology, laying the groundwork for understanding its key concepts, theories, and methods. The chapter begins with an explanation of what sociology is and why it is important. It discusses how sociology differs from other social sciences and how it focuses on the study of society, social interaction, and social institutions. Before the formalization of sociology as a discipline, scholars throughout history pondered questions related to society and human interaction. The chapter introduces the major theoretical perspectives in sociology such as functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Each perspective offers a different way of understanding society and social behavior. Studying sociology enriches individuals’ lives by deepening the understanding of society, enhancing critical thinking skills, and empowering people to create positive change in the world.

  • Exam 1 Component II Essay Question

In recent years, there have been several infectious diseases to garner public and medical

attention for various reasons (Ebola, TB, Whooping cough, Measles, Mumps, and SARS-CoV-2 or

COVID-19 to name a few). In addition, debates about mandated immunizations are growing with

some arguing that individuals should have the right to choose whether to get vaccines. While

biomedical technology and discoveries like vaccines are extremely important in the battle

against infectious diseases, why is it also important to understand infectious diseases today

from a socio-historical perspective? For example, why do we still need to examine the role of

social determinants in relation to who is at risk for infectious diseases as well as how the organisms which cause these diseases, and the hosts and vectors behave? How does looking at

the history of other infectious diseases provide insight for contemporary efforts to deal with

    infectious disease?

  • Sociology of Love

Sociology of Love/ First Paper Assignment Deb Cohan, Ph.D. Interview Project The purpose of this interview project is to give you the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding about issues related to love from the perspective of another person. When thinking about whom you want to interview, you may want to consider what issues you feel passionate and curious about or even afraid of. You will need to consider what themes and topics most interest you related to love and what you feel you would benefit from learning more about. Here are many options from which to choose: -an individual (or a couple) who strikes you as deeply in love in a romantic relationship and you want to understand what helps their relationship endure over time, changes, etc. -a person in a commuter marriage -a person over the age of 70 reflecting on how love has shaped their life longitudinally, in positive ways and also in perhaps problematic ways -a person (or couple) that have been together for over 20 years (they need not be a happy couple) -a person who has been with their first love for over 25 years or has gotten back together with that person after 25 years elapsed -a survivor of some kind (trauma, addiction, etc) who has developed a true sense of self love -a therapist -someone who works in the wedding industry -someone who is engaged to be married -someone who got married during the height of the pandemic -a person who has pursued an activity with so much love and gusto—like art, music, etc. If you choose this, you might want to watch the short movie Iris starring Iris Apfel. What you will do: Frame a set of issues, concerns, and questions you would like to address in the interview, using our class discussions and materials as a backdrop. Tape record the interview if at all possible and only if the person agrees to it. Transcribe the interview. Analyze the interview for major themes. You will need to turn in a copy of the interview transcript. Please note that your actual paper is separate from this interview transcription; you may submit these as two separate documents when you upload to Blackboard, or the transcription can come after your paper at the end as one uploaded document. You will use your transcript as one of your data sources for quoting in the actual paper as you would if you were relying on an outside source. Please stick with ONLY the readings and sources for this class; there is no need to do library research for this assignment. Your actual paper will be four pages maximum.
