  • Literature Review of Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral I…

    No page/word count requirement!

    Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the effectiveness of Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) for autistic young children using an evidence-based practice (EBP) framework that includes research evidence and autistic community perspectives.

    Research Question

The analysis must address the following PICO question:

For autistic young children (P), do Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) (I), compared to more structured adult-led interventions (C), improve social communication and engagement outcomes (O)?

All components of the project must relate directly to this question.

    Step 1: Understand the Intervention

    Before reviewing research, clearly describe:

    • What NDBIs are
    • Core components (naturalistic teaching, child-led interaction, developmental principles, behavioral strategies)
    • Examples (e.g., ESDM, PRT, EMT)
    • Who they are designed for
    • How they differ from structured adult-directed behavioral approaches

Step 2: Conduct a Literature Review

Locate at least 35 peer-reviewed primary research studies that evaluate NDBIs for young autistic children.

    For each study:

    • Identify the research design (RCT, quasi-experimental, single-subject, etc.)
    • Identify participants (age range, diagnosis)
    • Identify outcome measures (social communication, engagement, language)
    • Summarize results
    • Note strengths and limitations

    Then synthesize across studies:

    • Is evidence consistent?
    • Are outcomes meaningful?
    • What level of evidence is represented?

Do not list articles separately compare them.

Step 3: Evaluate the Comparison Condition

Because the PICO includes comparison to structured adult-led interventions:

    • Describe what structured adult-led interventions typically involve
    • Explain how they differ from NDBIs
    • Note whether research directly compares these two approaches
    • Discuss what the evidence suggests when comparing them

Step 4: Integrate Autistic Community Perspectives

Locate at least one autistic-authored perspective (article, blog, podcast, video) discussing:

    • Early intervention
    • Behavioral intervention
    • Child-led approaches
    • Neurodiversity

    Explain:

    • Do autistic perspectives align with NDBIs?
    • Do NDBIs support autonomy and intrinsic motivation?
    • Are there concerns about compliance-based models?
    • How do these perspectives influence interpretation of research?

This section must explicitly connect to neurodiversity-affirming practice.

Step 5: Apply the Evidence-Based Practice Framework

Use all three components of EBP:

    1. Best research evidence
    2. Clinical expertise (what clinicians observe in practice)
    3. Client/family values and autistic perspectives

Explain how these three components interact when making a decision about NDBIs.

    Step 6: Draw Clinical Conclusions

    Answer the PICO question directly.

    Your conclusion must include:

    • Whether NDBIs improve social communication and engagement
    • Whether they appear more effective than structured adult-led approaches
    • For whom they may be most appropriate
    • Any limitations in current research
    • A clear clinical recommendation

Avoid vague statements. Make a justified decision.

    Step 7: Create DeliverablesPowerPoint Presentation

    Include:

    • Title slide
    • PICO question
    • Description of NDBIs
    • Literature review findings
    • Autistic perspective integration
    • EBP analysis
    • Clinical recommendation
    • References

    One-Page Handout (Front & Back)

    Must include:

    • The PICO question
    • Brief description of NDBIs
    • Table summarizing research evidence
    • Key findings
    • Clinical recommendation
    • References (may use smaller font)

Use bullet points, visuals, and minimal dense text.

  • Basic Research EBP Proposal

Instructions for the Basic Research or EBP Proposal

To fully appreciate and gain a deeper understanding of the research and EBP process, students will write a six-to-seven-page basic research or evidence-based practice project proposal. The paper will be completed in drafts and submitted along with drafts of the Evidence Analysis Grid (EAG). Peer review and the EAG will be used to assist in writing the proposal. The review of the literature will be the first draft. The proposal will be typed in APA format including the following components. The Methods section may be bulleted.

    Initial steps:

    1. The first step is to identify a problem and create a PICOT question and use the terms in the PICOT as your search terms for your data base searches. Keep track of your search terms, the number of hits received, the number of articles reviewed, the number included and why, and the number rejected and why. (I have provided the Johns Hopkins instrument in the folder on Bb for this assignment to help you track this information).
    2. Include the essential information from each article included in your EAG.
    3. Assess the quality and quantity of your evidence. What does the literature say about the problem? Is there is a good amount of quality evidence that is consistent in the outcomes? If Yes you have an EBP project and you will be completing an EBP project proposal. If the answer is No, or if there is inconsistency in the literature, this means there is a gap in the literature, and you will be completing a research proposal. If you have a research proposal, then you must determine if a qualitative or quantitative design is the best way to approach the problem. (A synthesis grid is not required for this assignment but it does help with this assessment. If you would like to explore how to convert your EAG to a synthesis grid, please ask for assistance.)
    4. Items A through C above are all completed by reading and analyzing the literature, and writing the literature review, so getting into the literature is essential and the first step.

    Getting into the weeds:

    1. Literature Review The first draft due with the draft EAG
    2. The second draft (which should include a substantial amount done on Literature Review) with EAG
    3. The next draft along with additional work done on the EAG is due for peer review in the Writing Workshop scheduled for. In this workshop the Literature Review and EAG should be very well developed. Based upon this information the student should begin to plan either a research proposal or an EBP project. If not done prior, this workshop should focus on the Purpose, Significance, definition of terms, & possibly the theoretical framework (if research) or EBP model (if an EBP project) and the proposed design. Edits from peer feedback from 3/26/26 will be incorporated and –

    Components of the Proposal:

    Title of the Proposal

The title should be clear and succinct.

    Abstract10%

Abstract your proposal after you have finished writing the proposal. This is the last piece of the puzzle and it gets a page all its own. The abstract should include the Background, Purpose, Intervention, Data to be collected, and any potential limitations.

Introduction/Background In about one paragraph, provide some background information about this clinical problem.

Purpose/Research Question(s)/Hypothesis: State the Purpose of the Proposal in clear and concise terms. Only include a hypothesis if it is necessary and do not include one if you are proposing a qualitative design or if this will be an EBP proposal.

Significance State why this proposed study/project is needed. This is the so what factor. If you cannot clearly and logically state the importance and value of the study/project, then why consider it?

Definition of Terms – Define the major terms/concepts in your study/project theoretically and operationally. A theoretical definition is the definition of the term or concept according to your intended use in the proposal. The operational definition is how the term or concept will be measured. Example:

    • Depression (you could use the DSM definition with citation) or your own definition as to how you intend to use the term. This would be your theoretical definition.
    • Depression will be determined as a score of 9 or above on the PHQ-9 (citation) for the purposes of this project. This would be your operational definition because this is how you are operationalizing (measuring) the concept of depression.

The Background through to the Definition of Terms should encompass one or two pages of the paper. This section of the paper is worth 15%.

Theoretical Framework-Explain the theoretical framework or EBP model for this project.

Please note, theoretical frameworks/models are not usually included in qualitative research studies because qualitative research usually generates theory. However, for the purposes of this paper, everyone will include a theoretical framework or EBP model. Explain this in one paragraph. 10%

    Literature Review

Introduction Use this section to introduce the reader to the review of the literature. Include the search terms you used to conduct your search, the number of hits you received, the number of articles reviewed, the number included in the review, and explain why they were included, and the reasons for the excluded articles. This is usually one paragraph. You could also demonstrate this and eliminate some of the narrative using a PRISMA flow diagram.

    1. All sources should be peer reviewed and published within the previous 5 years. You may include:
    2. One clinical article
    3. One expert opinion (position statement, clinical practice guideline, lit review, scoping review, integrative review)
    4. One publication may be older than 5 years
    5. The rest must be research publications – ideally of the highest level of evidence if you are considering an EBP proposal or multiple types of research studies if you think you will be doing a research proposal.

Body of the Literature Review- In this section briefly discuss the literature reviewed including only the most salient information. Try not to present each article separately. It is better to integrate and synthesize the information so the reader can clearly understand how the evidence you are presenting, supports the proposal. If you have different focused areas, identify them using subheadings.

Summary Summarize/synthesize the literature reviewed. Synthesize it so it justifies the need for the project you are proposing. This should be about a paragraph, but can be a little longer if necessary.

This section should be at about two pages of text. 30%

    Methods

This section of the paper may be bulleted due to the time constraints in this class.

Design- State the design of the study/project, and explain the rationale for the design chosen.

Examples for research proposal designs include

    • Qualitative Research using a phenomenological method, or another design might be Qualitative using Grounded Theory, etc.
    • Quantitative Research using a descriptive survey; Quantitative using a cross-sectional design; Quantitative using an experimental method; Quantitative using quasi-experimental method; etc.
    • If you plan to use both methods it would be a Mixed-methods design.

Examples for EBP project designs typically use a Quality Improvement method.

Setting and Sample- State where the project will take place. Describe the sample population (inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria) and explain how they will be recruited.

Intervention What do you plan to do? Explain it here.

Data Collection Clearly state the data that will be collected and how it will be collected. Include the demographic data you plan to collect.

Instrumentation/Measures Explain you data collection instrument(s). Include validity and reliability statistics/information.

Data Analysis State the statistical analysis that will be used to analyze the data.

Protection for Human Participants State that IRB approval will be obtained. Discuss each of the following:

    Risks:

    Benefits:

    Compensation:

    Alternatives:

    Autonomy:

    Confidentiality:

Informed Consent: Explain if informed consent will be obtained.

Threats and Limitations Are there any known threats or limitations to this proposed project/study. If so include them here.

Try to keep this section to two pages and no more than three. 20%

Conclusions Summarize the proposal in one paragraph its purpose, significance, what will be done, and what this study/project is intended to accomplish. 5%

References 5%-should be 4 references that include 4 really good qualitative/quantative research

Provides geological background and mining history, including the timeline of discoveries across the region. This is not an academic sourcein fact, it is the same powerpoint and the same link to your first source at the top of this list.

For example, Twin Metal’s historical timeline outlines the early years of commercial mining in northeastern Minnesota, including the 1884 shipments and the rapid growth of mining towns like Ely. This is not an academic sourceand it is exactly the same flyer as your third source above.

Im drawn to the 1884 discovery of iron ore on the Mesabi Range because it represents a turning point where geology, industry, and human migration collided to reshape an entire region. The Mesabi discovery didnt just launch a mining districtit triggered rapid economic transformation in northern Minnesota, attracting workers, capital, and infrastructure almost overnight. m interested in how a single geological event can ripple outward into demographic change, community formation, and national industrial growth. Studying this moment helps me understand how natural resources influence settlement patterns, labor systems, and regional identity. It also connects to broader themes I care abouthow environments shape human societies, how economic booms alter landscapes, and how local histories tie into national narratives of industrialization.

Also, keep in mind I can’t always come to your office because I have to work on a daily basis. And last I checked, this email was the assignment. So, after reading all of this and giving you my topic, is it a yes or no for me to research, keep in mind we only have 3 months left in the semester.

    Thanks,

    Mason Raaen

    Dear Mason:

If you cannot make my office hours, you are welcome, as I have said repeatedly, to make an appointment with me.

Your sources above are not academic sources, except for the one 1946 article I noted. Thus, you may not use any of them for your research. If we sit down together, then we can look at sources together and brainstorm together. If you were to base your paper on the sources above, it would not earn a passing grade.

I gave you seven out of ten points for the required one-on-one meeting with me because you have not circled back to see me about your topic. Because you have not had HIST 3010if I am remembering correctlyyou are at a disadvantage regarding this semester-long research paper. Thus, it is incumbent upon you to work with me to understand appropriate and acceptable sources for a university-level research paper for an upper division class in your major.

At the moment, I cannot authorize this topic because the sources are not there.

Why, why cant I get you to come see me in person about your topic? My job is to make sure that you have a topic that is actually doable for this course and for the time we have left.

You have not told me about your sources for this latest topic idea of yours. What have you found? What primary sources have you located? What secondary sources exist?

And why are you interested in this topic?

The task of settling on a topic is a critically important one. Doing it by email is a terrible idea because it is likely to result in a very frustrating time for both of us.
