    Hearing Backbeat and Swing

In the section about Jump Blues, I demonstrate the backbeat (2 and 4) and swung rhythms (at the 2:13 timestamp in the video). Clap along with my demonstration of these two rhythmic elements , and see how the backbeat feels different than the downbeat, and how “straight” rhythms compare to “swung.”

Even if you don’t necessary feel it, or have a good description of it post your thoughts or reply to someone else.

    Example 1

Clapping along with the backbeat 1 & 3, it felt more still and steady. As for clapping along for the backbeat 2 and 4 it felt like more movement, more upbeat, like you can sand along to it. Its so strange how you think something will sound similar but actually feel very different.

    Example 2

When I clapped along, the backbeat on 2 and 4 felt more fun and made me want to move more. The straight rhythm sounded more even, while the swung rhythm felt bouncier. It was a small difference, but I could definitely notice it.

    Example 3

The clapping on the two and the four makes it a lot more groovy, or bouncy as mentioned in the video. When I was listening to the claps on the two and the four, I was more into it, as it felt as if it had more suspense to it as well. The one and three aren’t boring, however it feels more entertaining listening to the 2 and 4. The straight and swung differences were much different as well. The straight rhythm lacks the suspense, and beat that the swung beat has. The swung beat got me moving to the beat a little bit, and it feels like I should be dancing to that beat.

    Example 4

The clapping on the two and the four makes it a lot more groovy, or bouncy as mentioned in the video. When I was listening to the claps on the two and the four, I was more into it, as it felt as if it had more suspense to it as well. • Psychological disorder and treatment

Overview This week, you’ll complete an oral presentation focusing on one psychological disorder and the most common treatment for that disorder. Preparation Select one psychological disorder (that you have not examined in previous assignments) and a treatment for that disorder to use for this assignment. Choose one of the following: Presenting at a senior center to an audience primarily over 65 years old. Presenting at a local high school to the students. Presenting at a daycare to the childcare providers. Presenting at a YMCA to an audience of primarily adults. Become familiar with the software you’ll use to record your presentation and create your slides. See the possible resources below. Locate two peer-reviewed journal articles: one on the disorder and one on the treatment. Slideshow Instructions This will be an oral presentation; you’ll want to record your presentation and support your words with a slideshow. You may use PowerPoint to create this slideshow, or if you wish, you may use other options. You are responsible for making your presentation work. Use the Capella University Library: PowerPoint PresentationsLinks to an external site. library guide or refer to PowerPoint under Tools and Resources for more information about how to create a PowerPoint presentation. Design Considerations Consider the following when creating the presentation: Be sure to use the minimum number of words needed. It would be ideal to have no more than six bullet point entries on a slide and no more than 10 words per entry. You can always add more slides to cover any given topic. Be sure to use typefaces that are easy to read. Do not use more than two typefaces of different names (such as Helvetica or Times). Do not use different typefaces that are similar in style. However, it is very helpful to use some appropriate contrasts of sizes and weights of type to focus the viewer’s attention on the most important content within each slide. Consider using pictures and diagrams, in addition to words, to convey relevant information visually. However, minimize the use of decorative elements or effects that distract from meaning. For any visual material within your presentation that you did not create yourself, cite the source. For presentations in a professional context: If you use pictures or diagrams that you did not create yourself, you must seek out, and abide by, applicable copyright restrictions. Use Week 9: Google Search: ImagesLinks to an external site. as a resource for finding free images online. If required by members of your audience, be prepared to make appropriate accommodations. Use current APA style citations and list references in slides at the end of the presentation. Refer to Academic WriterLinks to an external site. for guidance in using proper APA style. See the Evidence and APALinks to an external site. section of the Writing Center for instructions on accessing and using Academic Writer. Instructions Using your course text, resources from readings, the DSM-5-TRLinks to an external site., and two or more scholarly journal articles, create a 48 minute oral presentation in which you: Describe the selected psychological disorder from the DSM-5-TR. Support with a peer-reviewed journal article and include mention of race and gender. Discuss the current diagnostic criteria for the disorder from the DSM-5-TR. Provide a brief case example in which a client’s behavior corresponds to diagnostic criteria. Describe the most common treatment option. Support with a peer-reviewed journal article. Generate three questions your audience might ask and present the answers. Recommended Outline Slide 1: Title slide with presentation title, your name, course number, and instructor name. Oral presentation notes: Start by introducing yourself and identifying your audience and topic. Slide 2: Describe the diagnosis, supported with evidence from a peer-reviewed journal article. Oral presentation notes: Define any terms or concepts that would be unfamiliar to your audience and include a discussion of race and gender. Slide 3: Use a case example to illustrate the diagnostic criteria. Oral presentation notes: Choose an example that would appeal to your chosen audience. Slide 4: Describe the most common treatment option. Oral presentation notes: Use language that would be easy for your audience to understand. Slide 5: Use scientific evidence (peer-reviewed journal article) to support the efficacy of the treatment. Oral presentation notes: Focus on the key aspects of the evidence that would interest your audience. Slide 6: Questions and Answers. Slide 7: References. Oral presentation notes: Thank your audience for their time/attendance. Additional Requirements Presentation Instructions Your presentation should be 48 minutes in length. Your presentation should employ effective spoken delivery. Elements include: Appropriate volume and clear pronunciation. Avoidance of audible fidgeting and distracting interjections. Variety of intonation and pacing and appropriate use of pauses. The Guidelines for Public Speaking media piece can provide helpful assistance. Important: Before you deliver or record your presentation, it is recommended that you allow ample time to practice your presentation until you master all these and are comfortable with these elements. You may record the slideshow presentation with your spoken narration or arrange with your instructor for a time to deliver it live. If you choose to present live, contact your instructor prior to this week so you can set up a time to meet. If you choose to record your audiovisual presentation, it is recommended that you use Kaltura. However, you may use alternative software you are familiar with. Refer to Audio and Video in this Course under Tools and Resources for more information on Kaltura. Note: If you require the use of assistive technology or alternative communication methods to participate in these activities, please contact DisabilityServices@Capella.edu to request accommodations. Competencies Measured By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria: Competency 2: Apply the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to psychological disorders. Apply the current edition of the DSM to psychological disorders. Use a case example to illustrate diagnostic criteria. Competency 4: Propose appropriate interventions grounded in psychology. Propose appropriate psychology-based interventions. Use scientific evidence to support proposed treatment. Competency 5: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for professionals in the field of psychology. Introduce self and topic. Use APA style formatting for citations and reference list with only minor errors. Address assignment purpose in a well-organized slideshow, incorporating appropriate evidence and tone in grammatically sound sentences.
