Here is information about servant leadership from the textbook “Leadership” by Peter G Northouse

Servant leadership is a paradoxan approach to leadership that runs counter to common sense. Our everyday images of leadership do not coincide with leaders being servants. Leaders influence, and servants follow. How can leadership be both service and influence? How can a person be a leader and a servant at the same time? Although servant leadership seems contradictory and challenges our traditional beliefs about leadership, it is an approach that offers a unique perspective.

Servant leadership, which originated in the writings of Greenleaf (1970, 1972, 1977), has been of interest to leadership scholars for more than 40 years. Until recently, little empirical research on servant leadership has appeared in established peer-reviewed journals. Most of the academic and nonacademic writing on the topic has been prescriptive, focusing on how servant leadership should ideally be, rather than descriptive, focusing on what servant leadership actually is in practice (van Dierendonck, 2011). However, in the past 10 years, multiple publications have helped to clarify servant leadership and substantiate its basic assumptions.

Similar to earlier leadership theories discussed in this book (e.g., skills approach [Chapter 3] and behavioral approach [Chapter 4]), servant leadership is an approach focusing on leadership from the point of view of leaders and their behaviors. Servant leadership emphasizes that leaders be attentive to the concerns of their followers, empathize with them, and nurture them. Servant leaders put followers first, empower them, and help them develop their full personal capacities.

In addition, like the authentic leadership approach, which is discussed in Chapter 9, and ethical leadership, which is explored in Chapter 16, servant leadership is viewed as a moral form of leadership. Servant leaders are ethical and lead in ways that serve the greater good of the organization, community, and society at large. What sets servant leadership apart from other moral leadership approaches is its focus on serving these multiple stakeholders (Lemoine, Hartnell, & Leroy, 2019).

    Servant Leadership Defined

What is servant leadership? Scholars have addressed this approach from many different perspectives resulting in a variety of definitions of servant leadership. Greenleaf (1970) provides the most frequently referenced definition:

[Servant leadership] begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. . . . The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servantfirst to make sure that other peoples highest priority needs are being served. The best test . . . is: do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society; will they benefit, or, at least, will they not be further deprived? (p. 15)

Although complex, this definition sets forth the basic ideas of servant leadership that have been highlighted by current scholars. Servant leaders place the good of followers over their own self-interests and emphasize follower development (Hale & Fields, 2007). They demonstrate strong moral behavior toward followers (Graham, 1991; Walumbwa, Hartnell, & Oke, 2010), the organization, and other stakeholders (Ehrhart, 2004). Practicing servant leadership comes more naturally for some than for others, but everyone can learn to be a servant leader (Spears, 2010). Although servant leadership is sometimes treated by others as a trait, in our discussion servant leadership is viewed as a set of behaviors.

    Historical Basis of Servant Leadership

Robert K. Greenleaf coined the term servant leadership and is the author of the seminal works on the subject. Greenleafs persona and writings have significantly influenced how servant leadership has developed on the practical and theoretical level. He founded the Center for Applied Ethics in 1964, now the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, which provides a clearinghouse and focal point for research and writing on servant leadership.

Greenleaf worked for 40 years at AT&T and, after retiring, began exploring how institutions function and how they could better serve society. He was intrigued by issues of power and authority and how individuals in organizations could creatively support each other. Decidedly against coercive leadership, Greenleaf advocated using communication to build consensus in groups.

Greenleaf credits his formulation of servant leadership to Hermann Hesses (1956) novel The Journey to the East. It tells the story of a group of travelers on a mythical journey who are accompanied by a servant who does menial chores for the travelers but also sustains them with his spirits and song. The servants presence has an extraordinary impact on the group. When the servant becomes lost and disappears from the group, the travelers fall into disarray and abandon the journey. Without the servant, they are unable to carry on. It was the servant who was ultimately leading the group, emerging as a leader through his selfless care of the travelers.

In addition to serving, Greenleaf states that a servant leader has a social responsibility to be concerned about those who are marginalized and those less privileged. If inequalities and social injustices exist, a servant leader tries to remove them (Graham, 1991). In becoming a servant leader, a leader uses less institutional power and control while shifting authority to those who are being led. Servant leadership values community because it provides a face-to-face opportunity for individuals to experience interdependence, respect, trust, and individual growth (Greenleaf, 1970).

Ten Characteristics of a Servant Leader

In an attempt to clarify servant leadership for practitioners, Spears (2002) identified 10 characteristics in Greenleafs writings that are central to the development of servant leadership. Together, these characteristics comprise the first model or conceptualization of servant leadership.

Listening. Communication between leaders and followers is an interactive process that includes sending and receiving messages (i.e., talking and listening). Servant leaders communicate by listening first. They recognize that listening is a learned discipline that involves hearing and being receptive to what others have to say. Through listening, servant leaders acknowledge the viewpoint of followers and validate these perspectives.

Empathy. Empathy is standing in the shoes of another person and attempting to see the world from that persons point of view. Empathetic servant leaders demonstrate that they truly understand what followers are thinking and feeling. When a servant leader shows empathy, it is confirming and validating for the follower. It makes the follower feel unique.

Healing. To heal means to make whole. Servant leaders care about the personal well-being of their followers. They support followers by helping them overcome personal problems. Greenleaf argues that the process of healing is a two-way streetin helping followers become whole, servant leaders themselves are healed.

Awareness. For Greenleaf, awareness is a quality within servant leaders that makes them acutely attuned and receptive to their physical, social, and political environments. It includes understanding oneself and the impact one has on others. With awareness, servant leaders are able to step aside and view themselves and their own perspectives in the greater context of the situation.

Persuasion. Persuasion is clear and persistent communication that convinces others to change. As opposed to coercion, which utilizes positional authority to force compliance, persuasion creates change through the use of gentle nonjudgmental argument. According to Spears (2002), Greenleafs emphasis on persuasion over coercion is perhaps related to his denominational affiliation with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

    CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

    1.1 Background and Context

This research examines the impact of social media marketing on the purchase behaviour of elderly consumers (50+) in the UK massage therapy market. In recent years, social media marketing has become one of the most important communication tools used by businesses to influence consumer behaviour, shape perceptions, and build relationships with customers. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are now widely used not only for social interaction but also for searching for information, evaluating services, and making purchase decisions, particularly in service industries.

The massage therapy and wider wellness industry is undergoing a significant demographic transition, in which consumers aged 50 and above have become a major and increasingly important target market. According to the World Health Organisation (2022), ageing populations are showing growing interest in health, pain management, and wellbeing solutions. This trend has increased the demand for wellness services such as massage therapy, which is often used for stress reduction, pain relief and overall quality of life improvement. As a result, understanding how this age group makes purchasing decisions has become increasingly important for businesses operating in this sector.

Traditionally, older consumers have often been perceived as less engaged with digital technologies. However, recent research shows that people aged 50 and above are becoming more active users of the internet and social media platforms, although their usage patterns and motivations may differ from those of younger consumers (Nimrod, 2020; Quan-Haase et al., 2018). Older consumers tend to use social media more selectively and intentionally, mainly for communication and information seeking rather than entertainment. This shift challenges outdated stereotypes and suggests that social media may play a meaningful role in shaping their service-related decisions.

In the context of massage therapy, marketing communication is particularly important due to the intangible nature of the service and the high level of trust required from consumers. Unlike physical products, massage therapy cannot be evaluated before purchase, which means that consumers often rely on signals such as professional credibility, reviews, testimonials, and recommendations. Social media platforms provide a space where such trust signals can be communicated through educational content, user experiences, and visible professional presence. Therefore, social media marketing has the potential to influence how older consumers perceive massage therapy providers and how they decide whether or not to book a service.

    1.2 Research Problem

Although social media marketing is widely used across many industries, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding how elderly consumers (50+) engage with social media when making purchasing decisions related to health and wellness services. Much of the existing research in digital marketing focuses primarily on younger consumers, who are often assumed to be more digitally active and more easily influenced by online content. Consequently, the digital behaviour of older consumers in the wellness sector has not been adequately explored.

This gap is particularly evident in the massage therapy industry. While trust, service quality, and professional credibility are known to play a crucial role in influencing consumer decisions in this sector, it remains unclear how effectively social media communicates these elements to older consumers. Furthermore, older consumers are often more cautious in their decision-making, especially when it comes to health-related services, and may rely more heavily on traditional communication methods such as word-of-mouth recommendations and direct conversations with professionals.

As highlighted in the research proposal, there is limited empirical evidence on which social media platforms are most used by this age group, what types of content they find most persuasive, and how social media marketing compares with traditional communication methods in influencing their behaviour. In addition, factors such as trust, perceived credibility, and digital literacy may play a mediating role in shaping how older consumers interact with massage therapy businesses online. Therefore, the central research problem addressed in this dissertation is the lack of a detailed understanding of how social media marketing influences the purchase decisions of consumers aged 50 and above in the UK massage therapy industry.

1.3 Rationale and Significance of the Study

This research is necessary for several important reasons. From a business perspective, consumers aged 50 and above represent a significant and growing market segment with considerable spending power and increasing interest in health and wellness services (Moschis, 2012). Despite this, marketing strategies have often failed to fully consider their social media habits and preferences, which means this group may not be engaged as effectively as possible by wellness and massage therapy businesses.

From an industry perspective, most existing research on social media marketing continues to prioritise younger audiences due to their high levels of digital engagement. As a result, the specific characteristics of older consumers digital behaviour in the wellness sector remain under-researched. This gap is even more pronounced in the massage therapy industry, where issues such as service intangibility, trust, and perceived risk have a strong influence on purchasing decisions. Understanding how social media contributes to building trust and credibility in this context is therefore particularly important.

From an academic perspective, this study contributes to the literature on social media marketing, consumer behaviour, and digital technology adoption by focusing on an under-researched demographic group within a specific service industry. It also builds on existing theoretical frameworks such as the Technology Acceptance Model, the Consumer Decision Journey, Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, the Theory of Planned Behaviour, and SERVQUAL, by applying them to the context of elderly consumers and massage therapy services.

From a practical perspective, the findings of this study are expected to provide evidence-based and actionable recommendations for massage therapy and wellness businesses in the UK. These recommendations may help practitioners improve their social media communication strategies, enhance customer engagement, and build trust and long-term relationships with older consumers in a more ethical and effective way.

    1.4 Research Aim and Objectives

    Research Aim

This study aims to examine how social media marketing affects the purchase decisions of consumers aged 50 and above in the UK massage therapy industry.

    Research Objectives

    • To identify the social media platforms on which elderly consumers (50+) are most active when searching for massage therapy services.
    • To understand what types of social media content have the strongest effect on their purchase intentions.
    • To analyse the influence of social media marketing on consumer behaviour compared with traditional communication methods such as word-of-mouth and in-person recommendations.
    • To investigate how trust, perceived credibility, and digital literacy affect elderly consumers engagement with massage therapy businesses online.
    • To develop practical recommendations for massage therapy businesses that aim to target elderly consumers through social media.

    1.5 Research Questions

    • What social media platforms are most frequently used by elderly consumers (50+) in the UK when searching for massage therapy services?
    • What types of social media content have the strongest influence on their purchasing decisions?
    • In what ways does social media marketing differ from traditional communication methods, such as word-of-mouth, in influencing consumer behaviour?
    • How do trust, perceived credibility, and digital literacy shape elderly consumers engagement and purchase decisions?
    • What strategies can massage therapy businesses use to attract and retain the 50+ consumer group through social media?

    1.6 Structure of the Dissertation

This dissertation is organised into six chapters. Chapter One introduces the background to the study, defines the research problem, explains the rationale and significance of the research, and presents the research aim, objectives and questions. Chapter Two provides a critical review of the relevant literature and develops the theoretical and conceptual framework for the study. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology, including the research philosophy, design, data collection methods, sampling strategy, and ethical considerations. Chapter Four presents the findings of the study, while Chapter Five discusses these findings in relation to existing literature and theoretical frameworks. Finally, Chapter Six concludes the dissertation by summarising the key findings, discussing the limitations of the study, and providing recommendations for practice and future research.

-scope the problem, and resolve the threats?

-promote employee morale in the face of challenge?

    -mitigate future corruption risk?

-address corporate competitiveness in its various markets of operation?

    Actions:

-discuss Loscher’s first speech to management about the crisis

-the challenges above should be used to measure actions taken in each of these domains

    4) Evaluating the change process

When reviewing the actions taken, consider wrestling with at least a few of these questions:

-What is your overall assessment of the new compliance program? Is it likely to reduce the risk

    of future corruption at Siemens?

-How would you feel as a Siemens employee living with these types of policies? Are there too

many rules? Has the culture been meaningfully impacted so behavior changes and expectations are clearer?

-How do customers react to the changes?

    5) Scenarios

-for the internship scenario, are you finding a way to communicate with and accommodate the customer’s request without violating the Siemens guideline? what are some ways you could do that?

-for the travel/sightseeing/per diem scenario, are these situations that should be negotiated on the fly? While negotiating the relationship at the outset? Some other time? Why? What particulars should be negotiated, and who from Siemens should be involved? Is a review or authorization required? Are some parts of the customer request unacceptable, if so, which ones? From a customer service standpoint, is there something Siemens can offer without violating its policies or protocols?
