  • Food: Compare and Contrast

Discussion #2 – Food: Compare and Contrast

Compare and contrast two artworks from Chapter 5, Food and Shelter. Explain to me (using sources outside of only the class text) the history of both artworks. What do scholars say (always put this information into your own words, then cite at the bottom of the paper) is depicted in them? How does the depiction and the meaning of food differ between the two?

Now, what do you believe the artist is trying to say about our relationship to food? Is it necessary? Ritualistic? Symbolic? Finally, using your outside research of the breadth of the artist’s work over their career up to the point/year of the artwork you chose (you can use Artnet online to see large amounts of certain artist’s work all in one place, or access museum websites) document if the highlighting of food in this artist’s work is typical, or if it is a departure from their usual subject matter.

Be sure add interesting historical details and observations.

Essay 1: Appeals and the Press

In class thus far we have studied the history of the abolitionist period and read appeals and fiery abolitionist and pro-slavery newspapers. These writers use a variety of arguments and appeals to convince their readers that they’re telling the truth about slavery, its insidious roots, and the wide-ranging impact this institution has on everyone and everything it touches. For your first response paper youll be presenting your own take on abolitionist arguments and appeals.

Write a 1200 words double-spaced essay appropriate for an academic audience in which you:

    • Choose one major argument or appeal from what we’ve read thus far (choose one specific, brief passage that you can discuss in detail). Explain why you think it’s an effective persuasion — why do you think the moment you chose is a particularly good way for writers to convince readers about the truth of slavery?
    • Show the reader how the argument or appeal you’re focusing on appears in one or two other texts we’ve read thus far. Where do you see writers using a similar strategy to the one you chose?
    • Explain the implications of the argument or appeal you chose for our understanding of the texts and/or abolition movement. What does your analysis show us about the abolitionists’ goals, strategies, and/or tactics? Lydia Maria Child, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimke, and the Pro-Slavery Press

    Competencies

1027.1.1 : Understanding Purpose and Audience

The learner writes with a purpose for a given context and target audience.

    Introduction

Effective writers know how to tailor their text for a specific purpose and a specific audience. For example, writers can choose to make an emotional appeal using simple language so that any audience can understand the message. Part of becoming a strong writer is analyzing how well or how poorly another author crafts a message, which will help one make stronger choices when it is time to communicate with others in a professional setting.

You will use the Task 1 Template located in the supporting documents section below the rubric to complete this task. First, you will choose a text from the provided list that you will analyze. Next, you will summarize the text and identify the text’s intended purpose and audience. Then, you will analyze the text’s context and the methods the author used to appeal to the audience.

    Requirements

Your submission must represent your original work and understanding of the course material. Most performance assessment submissions are automatically scanned through the WGU similarity checker. Students are strongly encouraged to wait for the similarity report to generate after uploading their work and then review it to ensure Academic Authenticity guidelines are met before submitting the file for evaluation. See for more information.

See for more information.

    Microsoft Files Note:

Write your paper in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) unless another Microsoft product, or pdf, is specified in the task directions. Tasks may not be submitted as cloud links, such as links to Google Docs, Google Slides, OneDrive, etc. All supporting documentation, such as screenshots and proof of experience, should be collected in a pdf file and submitted separately from the main file. For more information, please see

You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.
