Due: Sunday, February 15, 2026 at 11:59 pm

Part One: Amendments 1-12 AND 16-27

Note: While reading Amendments 1-27, look up terms with which you are unfamiliar, for example, letters of marque and reprisal, bill of attainder, writ of habeas corpus, emolument, etc. These are for your information; do not include this info in your paper.

    PAPER PROMPT:

Choose TWO amendments that directly impact you now (whether positively or negatively) and explain their relevance to you personally.

One must be from Amendments 1-12, and the other must be from Amendments 16-27 – DO NOT USE Amendments 13, 14, or 15 for this part of the project.

For one Amendment that you choose, expand your response by drawing from a current editorial article from a major American newspaper, such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, etc., and cite it at the end of your paper in 9th edition (400-450 words)

For the other Amendment you choose, find a multimedia creative/artistic work relating to one of your Amendments, include it in your paper, and discuss its significance. Include the title and creator. This will require you to research aspects of popular culture that connect to your chosen amendment. (350-400 words and an uploaded image of the creative work)

Examples of creative/artistic modes include music, poetry, songs, artworks, photographs, visual art, performative videos (serious or comedic), mini-podcasts, and more.

Format: Double-spaced, indented paragraphs, normal margins, standard size 12 font, MLA source citations

  • Enhansing quality and Safety

For this assessment, you will develop a 3 page paper that examines a safety quality issue in a healthcare setting. You will analyze the issue and examine potential evidence-based and best-practice solutions from the literature as well as the role of nurses and other stakeholders in addressing the issue.

You are encouraged to complete the Identifying Safety Risks and Solutions activity. This activity offers an opportunity to review a case study and practice identifying safety risks and possible solutions. We have found that learners who complete course activities and review resources are more successful with first submissions. Completing course activities is also a way to demonstrate course engagement.

Select one of the safety quality issues presented in the resource and incorporate evidence-based strategies to support communication and ensure safe and effective care.

For this assessment, be sure to focus on an organizational setting. This could be a primary care office, urgent care, mobile clinic, hospital ED, rural clinic, etc. Then use the literature to support the problem and solution in the organization. Reflect on costs to that organization/setting and what nurses can do to coordinate the care within the setting. Reflect on stakeholders who may be involved.

Be sure that your plan addresses the following, which corresponds to the grading criteria in the rubric. Please study the rubric carefully so you understand what is needed for a distinguished score.

Explain factors leading to a specific patient safety risk.

Explain evidence-based and best-practice solutions to improve patient safety related to a specific patient-safety risk and reduce costs.

Explain how nurses can help coordinate care to increase patient safety and reduce costs.

Identify stakeholders with whom nurses would need to coordinate to drive safety enhancements.

Communicate using writing that is clear, logical, and professional, with correct grammar and spelling, using current APA style.

    • length of submission: 3 pages of content plus title and reference pages.

  • 2-2 Short Paper Teratogens

In the resources for Module Two, you reviewed a significant level of biological information for its impacts on development. Exposure to teratogens during sensitive periods of development presents a serious threat to the overall health of the individual. Tobacco products, alcohol, illicit drugs (marijuana, cocaine, heroin, Molly, etc.), and over-the-counter and prescription medications are common in the lives of many individuals. While the health risks would appear to make the use of these substances prohibitive during pregnancy and even after birth, there is a debate that moderate use or use under physician care is reasonably safe. In this short paper, be sure to address the following critical elements: Risks: Select one of the teratogens listed above and provide a summary of the risks that the teratogen presents to healthy development. What immediate risks from exposure may be apparent at birth and during the first year? What long-term risk might exposure be linked to for this teratogen? Consider physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains when considering risks. If the risks are not proven, what supports the link to the chosen substance for that risk? Position: Construct a position, backed by research, on the use of that substance during pregnancy. Given the current literature, would you consider this substance high- or low-risk during pregnancy and why? Is your position biased in any manner? (It is easy to say never to take anything during pregnancy, but is it supportable with evidence?) If use did not affect the unborn child, would your position change? Why or why not? Changes: Summarize the changes or evolutions in professional opinions as they relate to your chosen teratogen. (For example, there is research supporting that cocaine use during pregnancy is not the threat it was previously believed to be.) What was the original position of professionals on the use of the teratogen during pregnancy? Has this position changed? How much of the position was due to social and political influences rather than medical or scientific?

  • Report #1: Active Learning (SDoH) in the field

    Assignment overview:

This assignment will provide an opportunity for you to engage with and learn from agencies, advocates, or efforts in the field/real-world. The idea will be to take what you are learning in the classroom and witness it in real world examples and engage with communities and populations you hope to serve in the future. There will be several options to choose from. You will be expected to write a report of what you learned and experienced. You can select one of the following options to complete the assignment:

Option 1– Interview someone working in the field, who’s mission specifically targets SDOH.

    • Create an interview guide to frame your interview. The interview guide should include 5-10 questions that you plan to ask your interviewee. I am not providing a pre-determined set of questions, as I want you to explore and discuss topics that are of most interest to you and relevant to the individual you are interviewing and the work they are doing or the population they are serving. You will need to submit the interview guide as part of your assignment submission.
    • Remember to allow time to set up an interview. These do not need to be in-person interviews, a zoom (or any virtual platform) interview would be fine. However, make sure you talk to the professional (i.e., you cannot conduct the interview over email by writing.
    • You might know people personally whose work aligns with addressing the SDOH. Alternatively, you might be very curious about a topic and not have any direct connections there so do some research on people locally, nationally, who are working on SDOH topics you are interested in. This is a good opportunity to reach out and make a connection. E-mail people, introduce yourself and the assignment and why you are interested in speaking with them. Below is an example verbiage you might send in the e-mail (you do not have to use this, but it is available if you would like to use it):

Hello [persons name make sure to check if they have specific credentials],

My name is [your name]. I am an undergraduate student in the department of [insert your department] at George Mason University. I am currently enrolled in a course that explores the Social Determinants of Health. Our upcoming assignment requires us to interview someone who is in the field working to address the Social Determinants of Health.

I would like to interview you because [insert reasons why you want to talk to this person]. The interview should not take more than 20-30 minutes and can be conducted virtually on Zoom.

I appreciate your attention to my e-mail and thank you for your considering participating in my assignment. I look forward to hearing from you.

    • You might want to record the interview because it will take away the pressure to write everything down. You can then refer to the recording while writing your summary and be more present during the interview. If you do record, make sure you have asked for permission from the person you are interviewing first!
    • If there is a certain individual that you would really like to interview and they are not available until after the due date, please let me know. We can make arrangements to extend the deadline. I might ask for some proof that the interview date has to occur after the deadline (e.g., proof of conversation with the interviewee). Just make sure to discuss this with me prior. Do not wait until the last minute to discuss this with me.
