  • Writing Question

    Written Assignment 1:

The first writing assignment is the article “The Facts of Evolution” by Michael Shermer (see link below). Read the article and write a 3-4 page paper (double-spaced, 10-12 pt font, 1000-1500 words) for submission. Each paper should consist of:

    1. a very detailed summary of the article (use the first 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 pages to tell me in your own words what the article talks about), and
    2. a short discussion section at the end (last 1/2 page).

You can review the grading rubric posted in the next Module 6 tab for an outline of the main topics that should be included in your summary.

Do not cut-and-paste from the text or other sources, and do not include quotations from the article. Use only the Shermer article as source material for your paper- the goal of this assignment is to get students to engage with some of the actual evidence and arguments that support evolutionary theory as presented in the paper, and not just repeat the misinformation that they’ve heard in the past.

Article Discussion: For the half-page discussion section, pick out and discuss some aspect of the article that you found to be the most interesting, surprising, and/or problematic. Include an explanation of why this topic was noteworthy to you. Feel free to express your personal opinions, including agreement or disagreement with Shermers arguments (and your reasoning behind these stances).

Don’t worry about a particular ‘style’ (e.g., APA, Chicago), but do use college-level grammar, paragraph and sentence formatting, spelling, etc.

Be aware that it is considered plagiarism to use the various forms of AI/LLM software like ChatGPT and text generation through Grammarly to complete this written assignment. Plagiarism is a form of Scholastic Dishonesty (cheating) recognized by HCC policy, and use of these programs for your papers will result in an assignment grade of 0. In some cases, revision and resubmission of the paper may be allowed. The grade for a revised paper will be limited to a maximum of 70 points. Please see the syllabus section entitled “Academic Integrity” for a discussion of plagiarism and associated penalties.

    Discussion 2:

To complete the unit, use what you’ve learned about Charles Darwin and Evolution in a discussion with your classmates. The discussion prompt asks you to think about What Influences Do You Think Helped Shape Darwins Ideas About Evolution.

Now that you’ve read about Charles Darwin and Evolution in both your textbook (Chapter 2) and the Michael Shermer article (The Facts of Evolution), you should have some insights into Darwin’s education and family background, his approach to scientific ideas, and the moral and professional struggles that influenced his thinking about evolution and the mechanism of natural selection.

For this discussion, you are asked to identify and discuss one aspect about Darwin that you feel played an important role in the development of his theory of evolution through natural selection.

Requirements: written assignment 1000-1500words and answer discussion 2

  • Social Science Question

Same concept; here are the resources. The long text is a poem, I think, or something like that, idk.

Edward Hopper, New York Movie 1939

Great art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world. No amount of skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination. One of the weaknesses of much abstract painting is the attempt to substitute the inventions of the human intellect for a private imaginative conception.

The inner life of a human being is a vast and varied realm and does not concern itself alone with stimulating arrangements of color, form and design.

The term life used in art is something not to be held in contempt, for it implies all of existence and the province of art is to react to it and not to shun it.

Painting will have to deal more fully and less obliquely with life and nature’s phenomena before it can again become great.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
    Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Dont ever make a suggestion, or shell ream you out. You have to walk on eggshells around her. Later, another nurse is showing Mark where the supplies are kept. She tells him, If you cant find things, dont call Central Supply because theyll get on your back about wasting resources. Its better to keep a few key things like IV start kits hidden so you can grab them when you need them.

Toward the end of his shift, a nurse assistant tells Mark a patient is vomiting violently in one of the examination rooms. However, Mark walks in to find the patient sitting up smiling and only a small amount of emesis in the basin. He hears muffled laughter coming from the hallway. Later in the shift, the nurse who is training Mark comments, Hope you dont mind a little kidding around. This job can get to you, and its good to laugh when we can.
