  • Bail system in the United States

Bail in the United States is currently a hot-button issue. Typically, people are required to pay money to be released on bail, meaning that only people who have access to money are able to be freed prior to their trial. This has contributed to the overpopulation issues that many American prisons are facing, since many people are unable to receive bail. Some jurisdictions have attempted to alleviate the problem by eliminating cash bail altogether and releasing those awaiting trial without payment. This has led to other issues, including releasing violent criminals who end up committing more crimes before they appear in court. This is an ongoing issue, and no jurisdiction has come up with a perfect solution. For this discussion, address the following: What are the pros and cons of the current bail system in the United States? What could make the bail system more just? Why does there appear to be a disparity in justice for rich people vs. poor people? For which crimes, if any, should bail be eliminated regardless of a person’s wealth? In your responses, bring in specific examples about disparity in bail based on differences in wealth or status. Before you continue, read the following: &page=1

  • Philosopher Profile

    Philosopher Profile Assignment Instructions

    Overview

Students will complete a philosophy profile of a historical thinker that has had a profound impact on western thought. This will require that the student understand both the cultural/philosophical context in which the chosen figure emerged and what impact his/her contribution has had to the development of western thought since. This exercise will help students appreciate how he/she is standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before them, even when it comes to thinking critically.

    Instructions

    Part 1

In part one of this profile, students need to identify their chosen philosopher and describe the historical milieu in which they emerged. This will require that the student highlight major influence and/or experiences that shaped the way this philosopher thought. Also, as part of part 1, the student should identify several major contributions this philosopher has made to western thought (be specific). This portion of the analysis needs to take up at least 4 pages (double-spaced using Times New Roman 12-pt font with 1-inch margins) and include proper, current Turabian format for any references used.

    Part 2

In part two of this profile, students will discuss the reaction the greater philosophical community had/has toward their chosen philosopher. To satisfy this part of the profile, students will need to answer the following questions: Is the impact the philosopher made still being felt today? Has/have the argument(s) the philosopher made evolved over time? If so, how? In what way can this philosopher and his/her contribution still be applied today? This portion of the analysis needs to take up at least 4 pages (double-spaced using Times New Roman 12-pt font with 1-inch margins) and include proper, current Turabian format for any references used.

    Front and Back Matter

The student must include a Title Page and Bibliography of sources used in the paper (properly formatted according to current Turabian format). The Title Page and Bibliography are NOT included in the page count.

  • Creationism in a new tuxedo? (NO AI)

Proponents of “Intelligent Design” insist that institutions of higher learning should permit, but not require, scientists and philosophers to develop hypotheses of divine origins for mankind. They argue that the concept of Intelligent Design implies nothing about beliefs, and only implies that “life had an intelligent source.” Basing your answer on the readings and course material, do you think Intelligent Design should be taught as legitimate course of study? Why or why not? Finally, why do you think a significant portion of the U.S. population today still doubts evolution, despite all of the evidence?

Your answer should be limited to 300 words (approx 1 page). After you post your reply, don’t forget to respond to at least one other student’s post. Your responses to other students must be substantive and thought-provoking. In other words, do not simply post “I agree” or “I disagree.”

    Requirements: 300

  • Discussion post

Assessment is a critical part of teaching, but planning assessments for elementary students requires more than simply choosing a test or activity. Young learners bring diverse developmental, linguistic, cultural, and academic needs to the classroom, and these factors must shape how teachers design, administer, and interpret assessments.

For this weeks discussion, respond to the following question:

When planning assessments for elementary students, why must teachers consider additional factors such as developmental readiness, language proficiency, cultural background, learning differences, and students emotional needs?

In your response, you might reflect on:

    • How young childrens developmental stages influence what they can reasonably demonstrate
    • How language and communication skills affect assessment performance
    • How cultural experiences shape students understanding of tasks
    • How learning differences or exceptionalities require flexible assessment options
    • How stress, anxiety, or confidence levels impact assessment outcomes
