  • Contemporary focus in psychology

Even simple behaviors are complex at their core (Geher, 2021). We now turn to timeless debates in psychology; they are part of the history of the field and remain influential even as theories and research change and grow over time. As you read through debates and current trends in psychology, consider: How might these conversations inspire future psychology learners and help direct them towards different professional pursuits? Ultimately, some of you may pursue graduate school and some of you may pursue different part-time or full-time positions. Our journeys are inspired by different theories and histories within psychology, and, though we all end up on a different path, we share a love for psychology and for helping others. How will you leave your mark in psychology? We should all strive to be the change in one way or anotherhow can we have a positive impact on the lives of ourselves, those we love, and our communities around us? In the last assessment, you will create a podcast and reflect upon a contemporary focus in psychology – its social significance, the historical and societal influences that led us there, and its continuing impact on social thinking. You’ll end with a plan for how you can be the change in the future to improve the human experience related to this contemporary area of psychology. Reference Geher, G. (2021, January 24). 5 timeless debates in psychology. Psychology Today. Be the Change – Podcast For this assessment, you will reflect upon different concepts discussed throughout the course, their historical relevance and intersection with today’s psychology, and why you need to be part of the positive change moving forward. • M2. Assignment: Creating a Thesis and Outlining Your Essay I…

Outlining is a valuable tool for structuring your essay. It helps you organize your thoughts and guides you towards completing your paper successfully. Think of it as a roadmap to your final essay. In this assignment, you will draft your thesis statement and outline your ideas for your first research paper, which will involve applying a literary criticism approach to analyze one of the following stories (from Modules 2-4):

    • “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe
    • “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
    • “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison

The following elements should be included in your outline:

    1. Title: It is a good practice to write the title of your paper as a reflection of your thesis statement.
    2. Introduction: Typically, an introduction starts wide with a topic statement and narrows down to your specific topic, ending in the thesis statement. This is your opportunity to establish why readers might be curious about your general topic, catch their attention, or put your essay in context.
    3. Topic sentence: Your introduction should start with a sentence that tells the reader the general subject. This is best placed as the first sentence in the paper.
    4. Thesis statement: Your introduction must finish with a clear, explicit thesis statement, that informs the readers exactly what your paper will be arguing. This sentence is placed at the end of the first paragraph.
    5. Essay map: This element is a part of the thesis. It outlines the proofs (support) that will be used to prove the thesis. (That includes at least 4-5 direct quotes from the story that support your thesis, with commentary for each.)
    6. Concluding sentence: A conclusion sentence should wrap up your essay by restating the thesis statement and demonstrating how it was proved by the essay.

Remember that your research paper must focus on one of the short stories listed above, and you should apply one of the literary schools of criticism to build and support your thesis. Please take a moment to review the grading rubric to understand the specific criteria by which your work will be evaluated.

This outline will serve as the foundation for your research paper, which you will develop and refine over the upcoming modules (Modules 2-4). It will help you stay organized and ensure that your paper has a clear and logical structure.

  • Professional Ethics Reflection

Students will be asked to reflect on using the ethical decision making model as applied to the case provided below the questions. Students will be given a series of questions to consider for the reflection:

    1. How would you utilize the ethical-decision making model with this case? Would you need to use the model, or make the decision on your own?

    2. What are the ethical codes that apply to the case?

    3. How important is a consulting network when you become fully licensed?

    4. What are your feelings about the ethical dilemma’s counselors often find themselves in?

    Case Study

Mary, a 19 year old college student was initially referred to counseling because she was experiencing social isolation and increased levels of stress. During the initial interview, Mary, a native-born U.S. citizen, described herself as an American Muslim feminist woman. She reported having never felt treated differently by her friends, or teachers in the past, perhaps because she was fair-skinned, spoke English without an accent, and came from a family of high socioeconomic status. She also changed her name from Miriam to Mary to be more integrated into American society. After Mary began college, she decided she wanted to learn more about her faith tradition, which eventually led her to wear a hijab (head scarf). She stated the hijab had a large impact on her relationships with friends and on social media. The counselor does not have any experience with the Muslim faith, identifies as a Christian-American, feminist and is Caucasian. The counselor feels nervous about being able to help Mary due to their differences.

    Assignment Composition Assignment

    Exercise:

    1. There are five compositions to make here. Make five 6″ square frames. Then make a composition with ONLY 5 shapes for each composition. Do NOT copy the examples. See the PDF. DO NOT label them inside the composition. Label them outside the composition, otherwise it becomes part of the art.
    2. Also you can like or comment on others. Critique at least 2 finished designs. Use the critique guide to help you.

    PART 2

    SquareExploding Square

Part I: Positive and Negative Space is the objective.

Divide/cut up (in any direction with only 5-8 cuts- you will have 6-9 pieces) a 14 x 18″ solid black rectangle and move the pieces to be a successful positive/ negative (black and white) composition in a 18 x 24″ rectangle (that is the size of your big sketch pad). Cut the black rectangle into basic shapes, nothing too complicated. Cuts can be straight or curved.

Separate the black rectangle like a puzzle ( keep the pieces in the same position, like top and bottom- So you keep a rectangle based shape) Move them to create a strong positive/ negative design. You don’t have to stay on the edges. When you are certain of the design, paste it down.

White space between black shapes is very important. Concentrate on those. Notice the shapes they suggest.

Part II: After you create one and submit to the discussion, enter a critique of a fellow students work by hitting reply within 24 hours of the due date. Tell them what’s working in terms of balance, positive negative space and creativity. Examples: Is there too little or too much negative space or is it working well? Does it feel balanced or is it unbalanced? Which type of balance of the 4 types apply?

View the examples. Do NOT copy them.

  • Contemporary topics in psychology

We now shift from history (and historical systems) to explore some contemporary topics garnering attention in psychology. We will focus on a selection of hot topics that have been making the rounds in modern research. Why do you think we have blended a class on history and systems with these more modern topic areas in psychology? What is the utility for your learning? Hint: Remember that the past informs the present, and also that you can be the positive change. For the third assessment, you will be the facilitator by creating training materials related to one of the hot topics: (1) mind and brain, (2) diversity, equity, and inclusion, and (3) technology and media psychology. You’ll select one audience and then work towards creating a presentation where you describe your topic, evaluate its social significance, analyze its research, apply that research to professional behavior, and articulate future directions. You’ll end via considering what questions such an audience might ask you, and sharing your responses. Assessment Preparation Step 1: Select a topic that you are interested in exploring further. Below is a list to help you in making that choice. Pick any of the sub-topics listed via bullet points under the main topicswhich one do you want to learn more about? Mind and Brain. Cognitive bias. Predictive brain. Artificial intelligence. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. WEIRD samples. Cross-cultural and cultural psychology. Liberation psychology. Technology and Media Psychology. Violent behavior. Identity construction online. Step 2: Select one audience to design training materials for: High school teachers-in-training. Low-level employees in a specific workplace setting (specify what type of workplace). Managers in a specific workplace setting (specify what type of workplace). Step 3: Locate three peer-reviewed journal articles on your selected topic. Be sure that at least one article represents diversity, equity, and inclusion. To accomplish this goal, find at least one article that either comes from an international journal, uses a non-Western population, or represents clearly the experiences of an underrepresented group in the literature. Note: One article may be from our course readings, but the other two should be from outside of course readings. Slideshow Instructions This will be an oral presentation; youll want to record your presentation and support your words with a slideshow. You may use PowerPoint to create this slideshow, or, if you wish, you may use other options. You are responsible for making your presentation work. Use the Capella University Library: PowerPoint Presentations library guide for more information about how to create a PowerPoint presentation. Design Considerations Consider the following when creating the presentation: Be sure to use the minimum number of words needed. It would be ideal to have no more than six bullet point entries on a slide and no more than 10 words per entry. You can always add more slides to cover any given topic. Be sure to use typefaces that are easy to read. Do not use more than two typefaces of different names (such as Helvetica or Times). Do not use different typefaces that are similar in style. However, it is very helpful to use some appropriate contrasts of sizes and weights of type to focus the viewer’s attention on the most important content within each slide. Consider using pictures and diagrams, in addition to words, to convey relevant information visually. However, minimize the use of decorative elements or effects that distract from meaning. For any visual material within your presentation that you did not create yourself, cite the source. For presentations in a professional context: If you use pictures or diagrams that you did not create yourself, you must seek out, and abide by, applicable copyright restrictions. Use Google Search: Images as a resource for finding free images online. If required by members of your audience, be prepared to make appropriate accommodations. Use current APA style citations and list references in slides at the end of the presentation. Refer to Academic Writer for guidance in using proper APA style. Assessment Instructions For this assessment, you will be designing training materials for your chosen topic. Select your topic, choose your audience, and then create a PowerPoint presentation with audio overlay to deliver your training. Your final product should be 6-8 minutes in length. Describe key points about your topic. What is it? How is it tied to psychology? Evaluate the social significance of the topic for psychology. Describe what you hope your audience will get out of completing your training. What real-world knowledge will someone take away, and why is that useful and important for their future? Analyze research on this topic (from your three scholarly journal articles). The research should further clarify how this topic looks in the real-world and/or why this training is valuable. Apply psychological research to professional behavior. What lessons learned from the research will influence how these employees engage in the workplace? Articulate future directions on individual (the employee), community (the workplace), and global scales to promote positive change. Generate 23 questions your audience might ask and present the answers. Submission Requirements Length: 68 minutes audio with 68 slides for visual support. Written communication: Must be free of errors that detract from the overall message. Oral communication: Must be clearly spoken and paced. Resources and citations: Use a minimum of three scholarly sources. One may be a course reading. One must represent diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Format according to current APA guidelines. See Academic Writer. Competencies Measured By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria: Competency 2: Evaluate the social significance of contemporary topics in psychology. Describe key points about a contemporary topic in psychology. Evaluate the social significance of the selected contemporary topic in psychology. Competency 3: Analyze psychological theory and scholarly literature in history, systems, and contemporary topics. Deliver presentation appropriate to the audience with clear, organized delivery, including answers to potential audience questions. Use APA style formatting for citations and reference list with only minor errors. Address assessment purpose in a well-organized oral presentation, incorporating appropriate evidence and tone in grammatically sound sentences.
