    2. What was the impact on the patient, team, or outcome?
    3. How might a BSN-prepared nurse have approached the situation differently?
    4. Reflect on how this relates to your future practice as a professional nurse.

#1Three key qualities or attitudes that improve relationships when communicated to others are empathy, respect, and genuineness (authenticity). Empathy is the ability to understand and share another persons feelings, which helps build emotional connection and trust. Respect involves valuing others opinions, boundaries, and individuality, even when there are disagreements. Genuineness means being honest and real in interactions, without pretending or putting on a false image. When people consistently communicate these qualities, it creates a safe and supportive environment where individuals feel heard, valued, and understood.

Relationships improve in many ways when these qualities are practiced. First, empathy helps reduce conflict because people feel understood rather than judged. Second, respect encourages open communication, making it easier to express thoughts and concerns without fear. Third, genuineness builds trust, allowing relationships to deepen and become more meaningful over time. Fourth, practicing these qualities increases cooperation and teamwork, as people are more willing to work together when they feel valued. Fifth, it strengthens emotional bonds, leading to greater satisfaction and stability in both personal and professional relationships. Overall, consistently showing empathy, respect, and authenticity creates stronger, healthier, and more positive connections with others

#2The quality of interpersonal relationships is greatly influenced by how individuals communicate and relate to one another. In humanistic psychology, Carl Rogers identified three core attitudes that, when communicated to others, significantly improve relationships: genuineness (congruence), unconditional positive regard, and empathy (Rogers, 1957). These qualities foster trust, emotional safety, and deeper connection, making them essential in both personal and professional relationships.

Genuineness (congruence) refers to being authentic, honest, and consistent in ones interactions. When a person is genuine, their outward behavior aligns with their internal feelings and thoughts. This authenticity helps others feel that they are interacting with someone real and trustworthy, which strengthens relational bonds (Rogers, 1957). Research in interpersonal communication also supports that authenticity increases relational satisfaction and trust (Reis & Shaver, 1988).

Unconditional positive regard involves accepting and valuing another person without judgment, even when their behaviors are imperfect. This attitude communicates respect and care, allowing individuals to feel safe being themselves without fear of criticism or rejection. Rogers (1957) emphasized that this form of acceptance promotes psychological safety and encourages openness, which is essential for healthy relationship development. When individuals feel accepted, they are more likely to engage honestly and vulnerably (Farber & Doolin, 2011).

Empathy is the ability to understand and share in another persons emotional experience. It requires active listening, emotional attunement, and the ability to see situations from another persons perspective. Empathy helps individuals feel heard, understood, and validated. According to Rogers (1957), empathic understanding is a critical component of effective communication. Contemporary research also shows that empathy is strongly linked to relationship satisfaction and conflict resolution (Davis, 1983).

When these three attitudes are practiced and communicated, relationships improve in several meaningful ways. First, they increase trust, as genuineness reduces perceptions of deception or hidden motives. Trust is a foundational element of any healthy relationship (Reis & Shaver, 1988). Second, they promote greater emotional safety. Practicing unconditional positive regard allows people to express themselves openly without fear of judgment, creating a supportive environment (Farber & Doolin, 2011). Third, they improve communication, as empathy enhances listening skills and reduces misunderstandings. When people feel understood, they are more willing to communicate openly (Davis, 1983). Fourth, these qualities strengthen emotional connection by fostering mutual respect and validation, which deepens relational bonds. Fifth, they reduce conflict and defensiveness because individuals who feel accepted and understood are less likely to react defensively during disagreements. Finally, these attitudes encourage personal growth, as individuals feel supported enough to reflect on themselves and make positive changes without fear of rejection (Rogers, 1957).

In conclusion, genuineness, unconditional positive regard, and empathy are essential attitudes that enhance relationships when consistently communicated. By practicing these qualities, individuals can build stronger, more trusting, and more meaningful connections with others.
