We expect many of you will have moved into Developing and Competent as your ideas have evolved, with some categories in Proficient, for example in citations and sources.

For the third draft, you will need to continue to develop and refine from your second draft. And we expect that you will continue to progress across the grading rubric as you revise and develop your paper. You should target increasing your categories by at least one for each draft, if your goal is to earn an A on your final paper (and you turn in all drafts).

How should you prepare this draft #3?

Your draft for this submission should be a complete draft, with the exception of a still loose and developing solution (we will cover developing your solution in one of the final discussions of the course). Every required section should be represented, and your foundation of identifying the problem, representing stakeholder, and justifying the need for a solution should be well-developed and supported. You should target a complete or nearly complete paper of 2500-3000 words for this draft.

You should incorporate the takeaways from each of the weekly discussions, this time reflecting on the revision process to clarify and strengthen your points. You should refine and develop all of your main points from draft #2: representation of the current situation, a clear and well-justified statement of critical need, representation of any existing or previous efforts to address the critical need, some evaluation of what has made improvements and what hasn’t made improvements, and why the problem persists.

We will give feedback on whatever you submit, and the more complete your submission, the more useful the feedback we can offer.

We will also answer questions you have or offer guidance and direction if you are stuck. We do encourage you to add a set of notes at the beginning or end of your draft with specific questions or areas of your paper that you would like to have feedback from instructors. Please label them as Questions for Instructors.

You should avoid the use of AI tools for any part of this draft. Do not use them for revising your writing to address feedback. Do not use them for polishing your sentences. Do not use them for making corrections to spelling or grammar. And do not use them on future drafts or the final paper.

Task: By now you have done extensive research on your topic, using primary scientific articles from the last 5 years to show data answering your central thesis question in biology. You must have a clearly defined central thesis, and not be missing any key background information or data in the chosen field. There is no minimum number of references, but in my experience, a reasonable number of references is 12-15 total, with 4-6 of those being primary articles. You can use older papers for some background, but the bulk of the data needs to be new

The paper is expected to be between 4000-5000 words (approximately 20 pages long in 12-point font, double spaced, 1 margin). Title, references and other supporting materials will not be counted for the word count. The word count needs to be on the paper itself. Papers are due in electronic format Wed, 4/9 by midnight (electronically). Please upload in Word format only!!! I am unable to add comments to pdfs or open .heic files.

All pertinent text must be cited appropriately and a reference list must be attached as the last pages of the paper. It is expected that proper formatting, grammar and sentence structure be used and that ALL errors are corrected.

It is expected that your introduction and general background is around 500-750 words long, after which, you must start presenting real data. This class is structured in a way that will keep you on track for writing. Because of this, you will not be allowed to hand in your final paper without first submitting the rough draft.

It looks like youre off to a good start! I know this is a work in progress, so forgive me if I point out things youre still working on in my comments.

In general, it looks like you have a really solid foundation, and youve done a great job pulling out the meaning behind a lot of the aspects of methods and results! Some general comments:

• Dont forget citations!
• You want to include a ton of the details for the methods and results of each paper. For methods that includes things like sample size, how they chose participants, details on methodology, etc (generally you had a lot of this just missing a few things here or there).
• For results, that includes things like the data values, statistical results (p values and stats) and in some cases you may want to pull a graph in. You did a good job of reporting the take home message, youre just missing the details.
• Some sections arent written in complete sentences. This is usually something I fix during edits towards the end (not a big deal right now).
