    The ability to communicate research findings effectively is crucial for success in the biological sciences. This assignment will require you to produce a short written summary that effectively communicates your results from the Natural Selection: Bacterial Transformation module.

    The report includes several parts: an introduction and statement of the hypothesis you tested, a description of the experimental set-up, results, and an evaluation of the hypothesis based on the data obtained in your group’s experiment. The evaluation of the hypothesis should include direct implications and broad implications from the experiment.     Recording Requirements

    Sound Effect Ideas

    Here are some suggestions for sounds you might record:

    • Everyday Sounds: Food being prepared, children playing, ambient conversations, fan noises, refrigerator hum, microwave beeps
    • Movement Sounds:Footsteps on different surfaces, doors opening/closing, chair squeaks, climbing stairs
    • Action Sounds: Clapping, screaming, paper tearing, glass breaking (safely!)

    Imagine a movie scene and think about what sounds would be helpful to have in your library to add during production. Remember that our final assignment will involve combining music, speech, and sound effects.

    Recording Tips

    Environment

    • Find the quietest space possible for recording
    • Turn off fans, air conditioners, and other background noise sources
    • Use soft furnishings (blankets, pillows) to reduce echo if needed
    • Consider recording at night when ambient noise is lower

    Phone Recording

    • Use the Voice Memo app (iOS) or Voice Recorder app (Android)
    • Hold the phone 6-12 inches from the sound source
    • Avoid covering the microphone with your hand

    Many small businesses have to squeeze down costs any way they can just to survive. One way many businesses do this is by hiring workers as independent contractors rather than as regular employees. Unlike rules for regular employees, a business does not have to pay Social Security (FICA) taxes and unemployment insurance payments for independent contractors. Similarly, it does not have to withhold federal, state, or local income taxes or the employees share of FICA taxes. The IRS has a 20 factor test that determines whether a worker should be considered an employee or a contractor, but many businesses ignore those rules or interpret them loosely in their favor. When workers are treated as independent contractors, they do not get a W-2 form at tax time (they get a Form 1099 instead), they do not have any income taxes withheld, and they find themselves subject to self-employment taxes, by which they bear the brunt of both the employees and the employers shares of FICA taxes.

While your focus is primarily on Diamonds essay, you can also add some additional evidence to his main ideas from another text of your choice on our reading list to support your thesis further.

    2. Compare and contrast Chief Seattles Environmental Statement to John Muirs The American Forests. Discuss the similarities as well as differences in their points of view.

    5. In Animal Extinction Julia Whitty states that mass extinction is a more serious environmental problem than even its contributor, global warming (par. 10). Explain her argument using appropriate evidence from the text.
