    Purpose

Explain what you think makes a family

    Instructions

Answer the following questions. Each question should have a 3-4 sentence response.

REMEMBER: Discussions are meant to mimic an in-class discussion. I want to hear your voice and thoughts. There are no correct or incorrect answers.

    • Is family based on blood or biology, love and emotional connection, commitment or responsibility, living together, shared history, or something else? Why?
    • Can someone be your family even if you are not related by blood? Explain.
    • Has your definition of family changed over time? If so, what influenced that change (experiences, relationships, culture, media, etc.)?
    • Do you think there is one right definition of family, or do definitions differ depending on culture, background, or personal experience? Explain your thinking.

    PART 2

The size of a childs brain reaches 90 per cent of an adults by the age of five. Early childhood is a time of rapid change particularly for the development of a childs brain. These early years are critical for lifelong learning and well-being. Talking, reading, playing and singing with babies and toddlers is so important in shaping thinking and emotional patterns for life and influencing learning, relationships and resilience.

For this week’s discussion, please watch the video and respond to the prompts:

    Discussion Prompts:

    1. After viewing the video, share two things that were new to you and explain why.
    2. Additionally, how can you share what you learned from the video with your peers or families?

    Grading:

    1. The discussion assignment is worth a total of 10 points. Grading is based on your depth and detailed post and responses to two other post.

    GeneticsW3 Written Discussion Genetics

Heredity Scavenger Hunt Worksheets & Teaching Resources | TpT

*Do not use the chart pictured here for your traits, it is just a graphic and does not match the traits we are looking at in this discussion!

Now that we all know each other a little bit it is time to get into the topic of Child Development. We are going to start at the beginning, prenatal development.

Our textbook lists several influences on prenatal development. Generally we think of environmental influences as those that occur once we are born. However, it is important to remember that on the day of their birth, infants have already been exposed to 9 months of environmental influences, and this exposure has occurred during a period of rapid growth and vulnerability. A healthy pregnancy with proper nutrition and prenatal care can promote developmental and put the newborn on an optimal path.

    Recessive and Dominant Inherited Traits

Recently I discovered a great online resource for exploring and learning about heredity and genetics in a fun, hands on way. It’s a website developed by the University of Utah for educators from middle school through college to use when teaching about heredity and genetics.

The website for is full of fun activities, videos, and follow up materials. I want you just to explore all it has to offer. Seriously, don’t rush through this. It’s all about YOU! Discover the wonderfulness of you!

Discussion Assignment: Do this several days before the due date! This week your discussion response can be a written response instead of a video posting.

When you are done exploring the website, read the information on Recessive and Dominant Traits Handout and see which ones you have or don’t. Use this handout to record your traits:

If the handout won’t open for you, try opening it from the week 3 module.

    • Make a list of the traits shown on the Dominant and Recessive Traits Handout.
    • Now indicate which ones you have that are dominantly inherited and the ones you have that are recessively inherited.

First you will post your “Trait Train” and then you will explain how you came to these conclusions. My discussion response would look like this:

    DDRRDRRRR

I base answers on this: my earlobes are detached (D), I can roll my tongue (D), I cannot wiggle my ears (R), I have no dimples (R), I clasp my hands w/left thumb on top (D), no cleft in chin (R), no widow’s peak (R), no hair on middle of fingers (R) and PTC tasting (R)

Make sure you put your D and R traits in the same order listed on the handout and that you have 9 traits! Make an educated guess on PTC tasting if you have never done this using a test strip in a science class before, use the information in this prompt to help you determine if you are a taster or not. Do this activity with at least one of your parents, or with your children (if you have any) to see what you inherited from your own parents or what you passed on to your children. If you can’t do it with a parent, then try the activity with your next closest relative. It could be a grandparent, or a sibling. Make sure you are using the handout and not the picture that is at the top of this post, that is just there for decoration!

Response: Choose one classmate and write a brief but meaningful comment in response to their post. Share about what you inherited from your parents or what you passed on to your child(ren). Be sure to post early in the week so people can see your traits, if everyone posts early in the week then it will be easier for others to find matches if they are trying to match with peers in the course. If most of the class waits until Friday to post then almost everyone will have to wait until Friday to find their matches and that will be frustrating.

    PART 1

    Overview

The “Current Events in Public Health” assignments are designed to help integrate the concepts in each module and then relate them to public health current events. This week the topic is: The distribution, or the HOW MUCH, WHO & WHERE of the problem.

    It helps to meet:

Course Objective 6: Demonstrate the use of basic epidemiological methods, such as the analysis of rates, and the definition of cases, population at risk, risk factors, incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality

Course Objective 2: Identify different public health disciplines, professions and organizations, and explain how each contributes to the field of public health.

You will read and summarize an article and provide a personal viewpoint. Then you will practice looking for epidemiologic information or how the problem is distributed. Your work should give us a “snapshot” of who the problem impacts.

    Key Takeaways:

*Epidemiology looks at the who, where and how many of health problems. This is the distribution.

*It is the epidemiologists job to use numbers (biostatistics) and patters to best describe those at risk for certain health problems.

    Concept Review: Prevalence

Review our terms unit: Prevalence is the number of cases of a disease, infected people or people with some other attribute present during a particular interval of time. It often is expressed as a rate. Prevalence is a simple way to express the amount of disease and a key point to include.

In easy terms, Prevalence is the measure of how common a disease or condition is in a group of people over a certain period of time. Numbers help us understand the amount of the problem. Prevalence helps us understand how many people are affected during that time.

    Readings

Article 1 . (,You will do the distribution of high blood pressure, not your chosen topic.)

    Assignment Steps

    1. Read the material and write a 3-5 sentence summary.
    2. Do some more research. Tell us WHO the problem impacts most and a little about them. Find more data that supports your topic.
    3. Include the current data on prevalence, gender, age, and race as your demographics/distribution. We will do social factors next so do not include it here.
    4. For the reflection paragraph add a personal viewpoint. A personal viewpoint is an opinion, not someone else’s words. Suggestions are “I wonder..” “I believe..” “This impacts me because..” type statements. Please don’t just state the obvious!
    5. For the bibliography, cite the article you read and then you must have at least two sources. (the main article and one more that supports your claim)
    6. Follow my format! You must have the bold categories and simple statements like my example for full credit.

    Example

I read an article on the use of telehealth in the treatment of opioid addiction. With so much technology, using telehealth has proven to be a novel and cost-effective way to address opioid use. Patients that used telehealth had significantly better recovery rates (1).

Prevalence: The opioid epidemic is far reaching with 16 million users worldwide and 2.1 million in the US alone (2).

Age: Although problems are widespread, the peak age for treatment is 25-35 (2).

Gender: Men, however, have an overdose death rate of 2.3x greater than women (3).

Race: Racially, whites have about 2x the death rate of Blacks and Hispanics combined (3).

Opioid statistics challenge our expectations of “drug addicts” as inner city minorities. I think people assume drug use is an urban problem and minorities. My kids carry Narcan because we know that experimenting teens have also been impacted by drug exploration. It is naive to think that our communities are not at risk.

    PART 3-

    DiscussionWeek 3: Discussion

For this week’s discussion, we will be sharing images of Chicanx art that have elements and iconography from precolumbian Mesoamerican art. Please make sure to read the slides prior to completing this discussion and see extra resources in this week’s module. I am extending the due date for this discussion to Initial Post due by Friday to give you more time to search for artwork and relate it to this week’s content. Please follow these guidelines for discussion:

    1. Choose one piece of Chicanx art and embed the image(please embed and don’t link, posts without image embedded will not be given points, linking makes everyone download to see it, see my announcement from Week 1 about this and see orientation module to learn how to embed image, you should see it sitting in your post, not the link or attachment. It doesn’t have to be a famous artist, it could be a local artist, could be murals, or lowrider artwork (Remember to embed click the little icon of a pic and choose image, then you can resize by clicking image if you like.)
    2. Write an analysis of the artwork and explain how it is influenced by Pre-Columbian art. Some things to think about could include iconography, designs/patterns, historical figures or events. (should be at least 50 words, hopefully more… click “tools” on menu to get word count).
    3. Include the name of artwork in quotes, artist name, year created, and medium…if possible.

    PART 4

Week 3 Reflection: Portraits and Representation

Who artists choose to represent in their art and how they choose to do so can hold significant power. A person can be uplifted through artistic representation or insulted and brought down. A fictional character represented in art can tell a story, share a lesson, or serve as representation of a real individual/group and their experience. The artists we learned about this week have used clay to create representations of others (real or fictional). Select at least two of the works we took a look at in this week’s lecture and write a 500-word-long reflection considering how representations of individuals might be uplifting or destructive. Who is affected by these outcomes and how? How do the artists weve looked at use their art practice to guide our interpretations of their works?

    Guidelines:

    To earn full credit:

    • Pick at least two of the works we took a look at in this week’s lecture. Share the artists name and the title of the work.
    • Share an analysis of how representation plays a role in both works. How are these two works similar or different?
    • Write a response that addresses the prompt and is at least 500 words
    • Submit before the due date and time

    Due Wednesday by 11:59 pm

    Points Possible: 20
