OverviewLittle Kim jumping out of an envelope

Journal 5, yes! We are officially 1/6 of the way through the journal entries for the semester. How cool is that? I have to confess that these odd numbered journals are some of my favorite things to read! You are not forced to write academically, and you are not including sources and worrying about proper citation methods. Instead, you get to respond to inconsequential, perhaps even silly prompts, to get the writing rolling for the week. I love the creative answers!

    Instructions:

To begin this assignment, compose your Journal 5 answering the following prompt:

Do you ever wake up and reflect on the “what could have beens”? What if . . . ? If you do, then this journal entry is for you. If you do not, then maybe it will give you food for thought. What if I told you that you could somehow write a letter to your past self, any past self you choose–it could be ten years ago before him/her/them, or it could be two months ago before you signed up for this class? If, in fact, you could go back and write that version of you a letter, what would you tell you ? Are there things you should have done differently? Honestly, I am a huge believer in the idea that everything happens for a reason, so there is not much point in messing around with the order of things, but, still, what if you could? Address a letter to yourself; begin it with “Dear Past Me” and indicate when in the past you are when you receive this letter.

Write your answer in a short paragraph (100-200 words).

    Submission

You may submit/upload this assignment as a .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .txt file.

When you have composed your Journal, name and save your document, then upload the file by selecting “Submit Assignment.”

    PART 2

SeeingDiscussion Two: A Revolutionary Way of Seeing

Manet painting of Luncheon on the Grass

    TO DO:

    • Read History of Modern Art, pp. 14-50
    • Submit discussion forum post by Tuesday 2/17 at 11:59 PM.
    • Comments will be extra credit due to the President’s Day Holiday

Like last week, this week’s reading (History of Modern Art, pp. 14-50) discusses major shifts in the way people both created and viewed art. In your second discussion forum post, you will once again choose an artist from the reading to discuss and very briefly present a work of art by that artist as an example of their contribution to the history of art. You may choose a work of art discussed in the textbook but please make additional observations if you do.

In your two paragraph response, you will discuss the reason why this artist is important, and how they helped advance the evolution of art in the late 19th century.

    • Briefly identify the artist and the movement with which they are associated.
    • What influenced this artist? (For example, other artists, scientific advances, photography, Parisian culture, literature, nature, etc.)
    • Was their work controversial? If so, why?
    • Briefly identify the work of art and provide a few pertinent details about the piece.
    • Describe the style or technique of the piece as well as you can. Was it revolutionary in some way? Does it affect the meaning of the work?

Due to the President’s Day holiday, you will have extra time for this assignment! Your discussion post should be completed by Tuesday 2/17 at 11:59 PM. It should include an image of your subject, which can be included by selecting the image option in the menu above the text box (it looks like a small rectangle with a mountain and sun). Comments will be extra credit due to the holiday. Please cite at least two sources in your post!

Requirements: Please place each part in a different attachment.

This exercise will do 2 things:

    1) This exercise will work to word and sharpen student thesis statements and thesis questions for essay 1.

    2) This exercise will work to help students develop logical solutions related to their thesis questions and root causes.

Students are expected to provide their replies directly in the submission box provided on this assignment.

Read the following instructions carefully on how to complete all 3 parts of this exercise.

    Part I: Thesis Statement Development

Students are expected to word and state their essay 1 thesis statement and thesis question in this exercise.

Type out your thesis and thesis question in the submission box provided below.

    Proofread and punctuate properly.

The thesis statement must be 1 complete sentence only.

The thesis must contain/state your campus issue ID.

The thesis must state what your overall single objective or ambition is in relation to the campus issue.

Students should use the words should or must in the thesis.

The thesis should be general or non-specific.

The thesis should avoid the following words: because, through, by, and, & but.

Students should use the following words in your thesis: must, should, or has to.

    An example thesis might read:

Exploitation of adjunct/part-time faculty at Americas colleges and universities must end.

    Part II: Thesis Question Development

After typing out your thesis, state your thesis question.

The thesis question will be a HOW question.

The thesis question must use the exact same words or wording as the thesis.

Keep in mind that your solutions to your issue will be framed using this thesis question.

An example thesis question for the example thesis provided above would read:

How must the exploitation of adjunct/part-time faculty at Americas colleges and universities end?

    Part III: Solutions Development

After typing out your thesis and stating your thesis question, provide your 2 solutions.

However, students must state their solutions in direct response to the thesis question stated above.

Your 2 solutions should match the solutions you identified on your essay 1 thesis outline and logically address the root causes from your essay 1 outline as well.

The purpose of this development is to get students to consider how the solutions “half” of essay 1 is in direct connection to the thesis/thesis question.

You may need to reword your solutions some to word them as direct replies to your thesis question.

An example response for this part would read:

    1) The exploitation of adjunct/part-time faculty at Americas colleges and universities must end by colleges and universities rejecting a corporate business model focused on low wage labor.

    2) The exploitation of adjunct/part-time faculty at Americas colleges and universities must end by colleges and universities valuing higher education not as a commodity or profit-driven.
