  • Writing Question

Submit your 4-5 page final essay here. Remember that to count as 4 pages, you must have substantial text on that fourth page (it should be at least halfway down the 4th page). A single sentence is not sufficient. Please make sure that you’re using 12-point Times New Roman (or comparable) font, and that the document is double spaced with Before and After spacing set to zero. Also be sure that you’re following the appropriate heading guidelines for your chosen citation style (MLA, APA, etc.)–even though you’re not citing any outside sources, you should still be formatting your paper in line with these guidelines.

It will be assessed on the basis of the introduction (is it effective? does it grab the reader’s attention?); reflection (are your thoughts, emotions, and impressions clear and present throughout?); and detail (do you offer substantive, vivid description where appropriate?).

    AI essay:

late afternoon sunlight streamed into my dorm room, illuminating the corners of my desk and brightening the scattered notebooks, textbooks, and loose sheets of paper. The air carried a subtle scent of old books, mingled with the lingering aroma of coffee from an earlier study session. I could hear the distant hum of campus life echoing through the window. Shadows danced across the walls, creating intricate patterns that gave the room a sense of life. Amidst this quiet chaos, a single object stood outmy pen. Its deep navy barrel shimmered in the sunlight, with the gold trim reflecting fleeting rays as if it were engaged in a silent conversation with the room. At first glance, it appeared ordinary, a simple tool for writing. However, in its weight, texture, and subtle shine, it embodied resilience, memory, and a sense of home. It symbolized my emotional connection to perseverance and growth. This pen had been my steadfast companion throughout my academic journey, from the uncertainties of high school to the challenges of college. During one of the most stressful weeks of my life, when midterm exams loomed large and threatened to overwhelm me, my father gifted it to me. Holding it for the first time felt like a quiet anchor, providing comfort during late-night study sessions and anxious mornings. Over time, it transcended its role as a writing tool, becoming a cherished companion, a reminder of guidance, courage, and unwavering belief in me.I vividly recall the day he gifted it to me, as if it were yesterday. I had just begun high school and entered classrooms brimming with students who exuded confidence that I had yet to comprehend. That summer, my father suffered a stroke, leaving him partially paralyzed and vulnerable in ways that profoundly impacted our daily lives. Witnessing his struggles instilled in me a profound sense of determination, a mixture of heaviness and significance: to care, to persevere, and to honor the people I love through my actions. One quiet afternoon, after one of his therapy sessions, he reached for a small object on the table beside him and handed it to me. His hand trembled slightly, but his eyes radiated steady reassurance. This is for when you need a little extra strength, he whispered softly. That moment, filled with unspoken emotion, transformed the pen into a tangible symbol of perseverance, care, and connection, transcending distance and time. The pen became indispensable during my long study sessions in high school. I vividly remember gripping it tightly during a particularly challenging algebra lesson, feeling the cool metal against my fingertips. The ink flowed effortlessly, gliding across the page as my thoughts kept pace. Every stroke seemed accompanied by the gentle presence of my fathera quiet assurance that I could overcome even when the problems felt insurmountable. I soon realized that resilience doesnt always manifest in grandiose gestures. It resides in small, deliberate actions: rereading a paragraph for the third time, systematically solving a problem, or persistently taking notes despite exhaustion. In those moments, the pen mirrored my own patience and determination, embodying the quiet strength required to persevere through lifes challenges. The pens familiar weight and smooth ink became a source of hope and reassurance during anxious mornings before exams. It reminded me that guidance and love arent limited by distance. Each library or study hall session became a ritual: highlighting key passages, jotting down notes, and drafting essays late into the night. Every stroke of ink carried unspoken intenthonoring my fathers struggle, pursuing my dreams, and embracing perseverance as a principle. No lecture or textbook could replicate the steady reassurance this small object provided. The pen was also there for moments of reflection and solitude. I often sat in the campus courtyard during evenings when the sky was painted with soft oranges and pinks. The breeze carried the scent of grass and distant flowers, blending with the faint aroma of coffee from nearby cafes. Sitting on those benches with my notebook open, the pen guided my thoughts. The words that flowed during these sessions felt measured and intentionalas if the pen could sense my mind before I did. I reflected on my fathers courage, the laughter we shared, and the hope he gave me despite his own challenges. I imagined him watching from afar, proud of the persistence and effort that had carried me across oceans. It was a comforting connection, proof that love and intention can bridge even the greatest distances. The pen also reminds me of why I chose nursing. My fathers stroke, resilience, and vulnerability inspired me to pursue a path devoted to care, empathy, and dedication. Every time I write with it, Im reminded of the qualities I want to embody: patience, compassion, diligence, and the quiet power of presence. During long days of lectures and labs, or when assignments feel overwhelming, holding the pen helps me pause and remember that steady effort creates meaningful change. It motivates me to approach my studies and future responsibilities intentionally, understanding that growth is achieved one small step at a time. Beyond my academic pursuits and professional endeavors, the pen serves as a symbol of connection, memory, and continuity between my past and present. It has witnessed my transformation from a timid high school student to a college student navigating life in a foreign country. It has shared in my tears, triumphs, quiet victories, and moments of self-doubt. Even thousands of miles away, I feel my fathers presence in its weight, texture, and the graceful flow of its ink across the pagea tangible reminder that love, guidance, and encouragement can transcend time and space. Each mark on the page narrates a story. The scratches and smudges bear witness to late-night struggles, fleeting frustrations, and the triumph of perseverance. They remind me that even the smallest objects can hold extraordinary significance, and that courage and focus often emerge from ordinary actions. The pen has been my steadfast companion through moments of self-doubt, triumph, and introspection, serving as both a mirror and a guide. It inspires me to persevere, to care for others, and to honor both my fathers journey and my own choices. Every time I grasp it, I feel grounded, focused, and motivated. It connects my home to the life I am building, symbolizing the continuity between the past that shaped me and the future I aspire to create. Each note, each line, each reflection penned with it carries the imprint of memory, encouragement, and purpose. The pen transcends its physical form; it becomes a companion, a symbol, and a reminder that perseverance, love, and care manifest in small, deliberate actions. Holding it, I feel prepared to face challenges, embrace opportunities, and continue cultivating the life I aspire to live. Through it, I carry forward resilience, my fathers quiet strength, and the enduring belief that even the simplest gifts can hold profound power.

  • Writing Question

    Written Assignment 1:

The first writing assignment is the article “The Facts of Evolution” by Michael Shermer (see link below). Read the article and write a 3-4 page paper (double-spaced, 10-12 pt font, 1000-1500 words) for submission. Each paper should consist of:

    1. a very detailed summary of the article (use the first 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 pages to tell me in your own words what the article talks about), and
    2. a short discussion section at the end (last 1/2 page).

You can review the grading rubric posted in the next Module 6 tab for an outline of the main topics that should be included in your summary.

Do not cut-and-paste from the text or other sources, and do not include quotations from the article. Use only the Shermer article as source material for your paper- the goal of this assignment is to get students to engage with some of the actual evidence and arguments that support evolutionary theory as presented in the paper, and not just repeat the misinformation that they’ve heard in the past.

Article Discussion: For the half-page discussion section, pick out and discuss some aspect of the article that you found to be the most interesting, surprising, and/or problematic. Include an explanation of why this topic was noteworthy to you. Feel free to express your personal opinions, including agreement or disagreement with Shermers arguments (and your reasoning behind these stances).

Don’t worry about a particular ‘style’ (e.g., APA, Chicago), but do use college-level grammar, paragraph and sentence formatting, spelling, etc.

Be aware that it is considered plagiarism to use the various forms of AI/LLM software like ChatGPT and text generation through Grammarly to complete this written assignment. Plagiarism is a form of Scholastic Dishonesty (cheating) recognized by HCC policy, and use of these programs for your papers will result in an assignment grade of 0. In some cases, revision and resubmission of the paper may be allowed. The grade for a revised paper will be limited to a maximum of 70 points. Please see the syllabus section entitled “Academic Integrity” for a discussion of plagiarism and associated penalties.

    Discussion 2:

To complete the unit, use what you’ve learned about Charles Darwin and Evolution in a discussion with your classmates. The discussion prompt asks you to think about What Influences Do You Think Helped Shape Darwins Ideas About Evolution.

Now that you’ve read about Charles Darwin and Evolution in both your textbook (Chapter 2) and the Michael Shermer article (The Facts of Evolution), you should have some insights into Darwin’s education and family background, his approach to scientific ideas, and the moral and professional struggles that influenced his thinking about evolution and the mechanism of natural selection.

For this discussion, you are asked to identify and discuss one aspect about Darwin that you feel played an important role in the development of his theory of evolution through natural selection.

  • Worknet project

Im attaching all the instructions and 1 example.

This two-part assignment asks you to create a worknet followed by a literature review to help you better understand the conversation around your area of study. The topic ive chooesen is the use of ai in universities. Im also attaching 5 sources that i need to use. A worknet is a four-part model of working your way through one source such that it leads you towards other sources and ideas that will be useful to the thinking and framing of your project (Clary-Lemon, et al. 43).

    Part 1: Worknet

Choose a scholarly article that is relevant to your research project. The article must be published after 2010 (unless theres a compelling reason for an older article). Then, following the model described in Try This, work through the four phases (semantic, bibliographic, choric, affinity-based) of your articles worknet, visualizing your findings as you go (youll want at least 3-5 points for each phase).

In addition to the visual, you will also submit:

300-500-word write-ups of your notes and observation for each phase (use the guiding questions in the text to help write these reflectionssee the chart below for page #s); and

An overall 200-word reflection on your experience. What did you learn about research? What questions did the process raise for you? What did you learn about yourself as a researcher? There are no concrete directions for this reflection allow your own experiences and interests to guide you. Remember, a reflection articulates what you learned from the process, how it changed what/how you thought about the material, and how it connects to or deviates from prior knowledge.

This assignment is reflective and inventive in nature, so focus less on the formatting of the final document and more on engaging with what the assignment asks of you: to explore, to question, to play.

You can find more information about each piece of the worknet (and the notes/observation questions using the table below:

    Part 2: Literature Review

While your literature review wont be finalized until the end of the semester, this is an opportunity to start putting your sources in conversation to see what the bigger discussion is around your topic. For the literature review, youll want to synthesize your sources to see how the conversations diverge or overlap.

For the literature review, find and read 4-5 academic sources (books or journal articles) related to your research topic.

    What to Write (3-4pp, double-spaced):

Introduction — Introduce the general issue and its importance.
