  • Discussion #2 The Use and Restoration of Ecosystems

Part A: Address the following topic in your discussion post. (Required)

    • Describe one way you can contribute to the protection or restoration of a terrestrial, freshwater, and ocean ecosystem. Be sure to explain what you are willing and able to do.

Part B: Respond to a classmate’s post with helpful suggestions or steps they could take to succeed with their contributions. (Required).
    respond to Madalyn Rhoades:

One way I have contributed to the protection of a freshwater ecosystem was conducting salamander surveys in a variety of freshwater habitats over the summer. Salamander species are great environmental indicators and can provide a lot of helpful information on stream quality. These surveys are still being conducted at Jug Bay wetland sanctuary and are providing a lot of useful information about the streams which are actually about to be restored. When I am home, I try to go out and help with these surveys, and I wrote the protocol they are still using to do these surveys. I also am available to help with the identification of salamanders they find or any questions the volunteers have.

  • Discussion #1 Zoos and Aquaria

Background: Public aquaria and zoos are sometimes the only way for the most people to see rare, endangered and exotic species. Supporters of aquaria and zoos argue that they provide an opportunity to educate the public about the need to protect biodiversity and endangered species. Detractors argue that aquaria and zoos give the false impression that habitat protection is not important because the aquaria and zoos will keep endangered species from going extinct.

Part A: Address the following topic in your discussion post. (Required)

    • Are zoos and aquaria an overall good thing, or not? List some you have visited.

Part B: Respond to one post you agree with and one post you do not agree with. (Required)

    I agree with Madalyn Rhoades:

I believe zoos and aquariums can be a great thing especially for education. As a child I loved going to the zoo, reading the signs and seeing all the different animals, I think this educational opportunity is great for children and adults alike. However, there are many zoos that provide poor habitat for their animals and cause the suffering of them. This is unacceptable, zoos should have strict regulations regarding the size of enclosures, enrichment provided for the animals, habitat needs and much more. Many zoos provide conservation with significant amounts of money through donations and allow research on many animals allowing for a better understanding of how to protect threatened populations. Captive breeding programs in zoos and aquariums have created a lot of success stories and have benefitted many endangered populations. Zoos and aquariums have the potential to be amazing places for education and conservation as long as the needs of the animal are placed above all else and proper regulations are ensured. I have been to the National Zoo the Baltimore Zoo the Baltimore aquarium, as well as the Pittsburg Zoo and aquarium and the Cleveland Zoo.

    I disagree with Josie Amstone:

I recognize that zoos and aquaria are often seen as tools for conservation and education, but I do not believe that zoos and aquaria are an overall good thing. To me, zoos and aquaria are separate from places of rehabilitation and protection; zoos and aquaria are a place of exploitation and entertainment. Personally, I often feel uncomfortable in zoos and aquaria, due to my ethical concerns about exploiting animals for human use. I see animals trapped in small cages with no freedom to explore and run and marine life contained to tanks with no exposure to open seas. According to Born Free USA, an organization dedicated to freeing exploited animals, zoos and aquaria actually have little to no conservation benefit. Many captive breeding programs have limited conservation benefit and use the guise of conservation to supply their animals. Reliance on captivity then prevents animals from ever being freed. In aquariums, captive whales and dolphins face high mortality rates, low breeding success, and severe phycological trauma. Whale enclosures are typically 100 feet in length, are you telling me that captive whales are meant to live in a 100 square foot enclosure rather than the miles and miles of the sea they should be in? In theory, zoos and aquaria are a good idea, which is why I have separated them from true rehabilitation organizations like the National Wildlife Rehabilitation Association and the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, real conservation agencies that focus on the wellbeing of injured and extinct species without exploiting them for human gain. I understand that zoos and aquaria are seen as an education tool, but is animal cruelty worth the tradeoff for seeing exotic species in real life? With todays technology, we have limitless opportunities to learn about animal without having to visit them in dire conditions.

  • project 1 Framing statement

My Improvements Made Throughout Project 1

According to CampusNews, current college freshmen spent a significant portion of their high school years dealing with COVID-related disruptions… students are now struggling to handle the rigorous academic demands of higher education. I initially felt unprepared, but Writing 110 has helped me grow and feel more academically confident.

Throughout Project 1, I have improved my questioning, comprehension, and annotating skills. Reading Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkensteins They Say/I Say, I learned new annotation strategies, such as highlighting main ideas, summarizing in the margins, and circling important words. and question texts (see figures 1-3). I found new ways to annotate and take notes that benefit me. For example, Figures 1-3 display my strategies for annotating. Before Writing 110, I highlighted randomly and had small notes in the margins. Now, practicing annotating for homework and in-class activities, I have found the most effective ways to approach the text. These refined skills have helped me comprehend texts, respond thoroughly in reflections, and apply these methods to other classes, strengthening my understanding of those topics.

In my argumentative paper, incorporating The Empathy Diaires by Sherry Turkle and If we dont have our voice, what do we have? by Liana Yadav, I made vast improvements in text integration and development of claims that have allowed me to strengthen my own opinions and communicate them clearly through summarizing and connecting back to my ideas. I used quotes from both papers for a counterargument and support my own opinion (see figure 4). In Figure 4, you can see that my use of quotes from Yadavs argument serves as a boost for my argument. I found quotes from both authors to craft my paper and personal voice. By quoting their words to back up my writing, it creates credibility and understanding for the reader. I have known how to quote and describe someone else’s writing, but in Writing 110, I have learned how to quote and summarize someones writing to make it unique to me. I can reflect on the reading and summarize its points to create my argument and strengthen credibility.

Over my reading and writing experience in school, I have always been nervous to read aloud, and have read at a slower pace than most. Going into writing 110, I was nervous about the workload, along with the pace of assignments. I wasnt sure how I was going to keep up. Knowing this struggle, I created a plan that consists of starting my reading homework as early as it gets assigned, giving me time to annotate, comprehend, and reflect. I also read the reflection questions ahead of time to understand what I am reading. This helps me grow as a reader because I can take my time and fully understand the content to apply to my writings and reflections. Not only have I seen improvement in my comprehension, but my pace has been getting quicker.. With this comes more effective writing and responses to the reading. I feel more confident in my skills, not only in writing 110, but in other courses as well.

Overall, writing 110 has made me feel more confident in my academic skills. I can take what I learn in class and apply it to all my other courses at UNE.
