  • Benchmark- preparing for the IEP Meeting MMS 560

An IEP meeting is required for an initial IEP, an annual IEP, and any amendment to an IEP. IDEA requires specific attendees for each IEP meeting, along with the required documents to be completed. Everyone involved in the IEP meeting is a valued member of the IEP team and must be actively involved in the decision-making. Preparation is an important step in holding a collaborative and successful IEP meeting.

Create a 12-15 slide digital presentation explaining to new special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and other stakeholders the requirements and timelines involved in preparing for IEP meetings and how to support individuals with exceptionalities and their families through the process. Once you have created the presentation, use a screen casting tool, such as Zoom, Vimeo, or Loom, to add voice-over or present the information in a video.

Include the following in your presentation:

    • Steps the special education teacher takes when preparing for all types of IEP meetings (initial, annual, and amendment), including a suggested timeline.
    • List of stakeholders that will need to be involved and a brief description of what they should contribute to the meeting.
    • Examples of data that will need to be collected for each section of the IEP.
    • Explanation of how the special education teacher will communicate student progress towards measurable outcomes and IEP goals with all stakeholders during IEP meetings.
    • Additional required documents (meeting notice, prior written notice, etc.) that may be necessary to bring or provide before, during, and after the IEP meeting.
    • Purpose/benefits of providing these documents including a draft copy of the IEP to all stakeholders.
    • Suggestions for ensuring the families feel valued as part of the IEP team, including strategies that offer alternative means of participation. Discuss how the strategies can support the inclusion of all stakeholders.
    • Suggestions for effective collaboration and facilitation during IEP meetings, including if the meeting is taking place virtually.
    • Effective strategies and technology for continued communication and collaboration with all stakeholders to meet the needs of students with exceptionalities.

Presenters notes are required for each content slide. Presentation must include a title slide at the beginning and a reference slide with documentation of resources at the end. The title slide and reference slide are not included in the total number of slides.

Support this assignment with a minimum of three scholarly resources.

Remember that video and audio quality are important and should be taken into consideration. Ensure your video is filmed with sufficient lighting and that the volume is adequate for viewers to hear. Intonation, expression, proper speech, and professional attire are expected.

Refer to “Recording, Editing, and Uploading a Video or Podcast” and use an online video platform such as Zoom, Loom, YouTube, or Vimeo to upload your completed video. If you upload your video to YouTube, select the unlisted option.

Submit the digital presentation, including a resource slide and an embedded link to the video on the title slide. Ensure that others can access and view the link to your video prior to submission.

While APA Style format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

  • Analyzing Arizona’s Language Development Approach

While all states must adhere to federal laws and policies to remain in compliance, states may address these laws and policies in ways that they deem best to meet the needs of their students. States share many commonalities in how they approach the education of ELs, yet they also exhibit variations in their approaches.

For this assignment, explore Arizona’s approach to English learner instruction through structured English immersion. Arizona’s Language Development Approach provides underlying beliefs about language, literacy, and learning development through research-based principles intended to be enacted in the instruction of all ELs in the state.

Part 1: EL Education in Arizona

Create a 10-12 slide narrated presentation for Arizona classroom teachers’ professional development. While various slideshow applications are available, PowerPoint is recommended for its integrated voice recording feature, eliminating the need for additional tools. Elaborate on the key points in each slide with supplementary details and examples in your audio narration. Avoid simply reading the content directly from the slide.

Your presentation must include a title slide and address the following:

    • Explain Arizona’s definition of an English learner (EL).
    • Briefly summarize the demographic and home language composition of the PK-12 EL population in Arizona.
    • Describe structured English immersion (SEI) as it is used in Arizona, including its distinctions from sheltered English instruction.
    • Describe Arizona’s Language Development Approach, including each of the four principles, and the synthesis of the research around ELs.
    • Explain student agency and its importance in the instruction of ELs, including in supporting self-determination, a sense of voice, and confidence.
    • Discuss components of Arizona’s approved research-based SEI models: newcomer, pull-out, two-hour, and 50-50 dual language immersion (which requires parental waiver).

    Part 2: Summary

In a minimum of 200 words, write a summary discussing the research-based best practices and foundational principles needed to instruct ELs, regardless of which program model is being used to deliver EL instruction.

Support your presentation and reflection with a minimum of two scholarly resources.

Submit your reflection, scholarly resources, and a link to your presentation in a single document. Ensure that others can access and view the link to your presentation prior to submission.

Remember that audio quality is important and should be taken into consideration. Ensure the volume is adequate for viewers to hear. Intonation, expression, and proper speech are expected.

While APA Style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

2nd REFLECTION DISCUSSION – NORTHERN RENAISSANCE, BAROQUE and AFTER

READ THE PARAMETERS FIRST BEFORE YOU POST A DISCUSSION. Invariably, a few students gloss the parameters and get very upset when the essay is rejected for failure to meet project requirements.

Need help? Or just want to discuss the posting? Write to my inbox! That’s what I’m here for!

Strict, 800 WORD LIMIT on the initial post.

OK kids, what do you think? That’s what I’ll be asking you every few weeks or so. Your job for this discussion, and for all the rest, is pretty open-ended, within the stated parameters. I’ll be doing this same assignment right along with you, since I never quit being a student of Art History. Please treat my postings as you would any other.

    1. Select an image that represents the 2nd quarter of ART141, northern renaissance, Baroque, Dutch painting or 18th century discussed in modules 5 thru 8. Choose from the modules. You may also discuss a related Image that is not in the modules, but ask the professor first. Avoid the big, famous post-card stuff because it’s low-hanging fruit and previous students have done it to death. Show me that you’ve done a deeper dive into the material. Always select an image that is relevant to the discussion time frame. If you are unsure of your selection, just ask me. That’s what I’m here for. If you select an image not relevant to this discussion it will be deleted for being OFF-TOPIC. Off-TOPIC posts confuse the discussion.

    2. Do some research about the image and the artist and know something about them. Statements like ” I don’t know what that guy with the beard is holding but it looks like a stick maybe” just make one look foolish. Do some homework and find out who the guy is, what he’s doing and so on.

    3. Write a PERSONAL REFLECTION about what the image is and about what it means to YOU and how it informs YOUR your life or YOUR experience. This is the most critical item. DO NOT just write a high school book report about the image or the artist, informed by a few dull, Generic facts cribbed out of wikipedia or worse, padded with AI generated rhetoric. That’s a rip off, and it’s not what this assignment is about. I’m not going to give any student much for that sort of thing, so please be aware.

Write with your own voice. Don’t try to sound like an Art critic or a travelogue reporter, god forbid. Proof read for sense and spelling by all means but never undermine your own voice.

Traditional testing tells me which facts about the course content you have have acquired, but discussions tell me how you’re applying that knowledge. Both are vital, and weigh equally in your grade assessment.

    4. Post the image you selected along with your personal reflection essay of 500 words. ALWAYS post in the discussion window. Linked items will not be graded.
